    You Don't need a shot card over the slug if you're roll crimping .

    I got one of those Russian roll crimpers a few years ago. I recommend them to everyone. They work great and really make it easy to experiment.

      I have one just like it but it has a different name on it probably sold to many many companies, works better than sliced bread.

    That’s great josh if you have a smooth bore barrel try that because the rifle barrel rips the petals off mine is a smooth bore with a rifled choke tube works good I’m happy with the results and the wads are intact

      Mine is a smooth bore. I may look into a rifles choke tube sometime.

    I like that roll crimper. I’ve been tempted to order one. You may have just pushed me over the edge lol. Looking forward to this series👍🏻

      This one is kind of cheaper made but works. If I was loading thousands of round I would get a little better made one.

      I have the same, works just fine. My suggestion is just get the roll crimper from ballistic products an just hook it to your hand drill.

      I have one of the crimpers in the video for 12 gauge. For 410 which is a bear to get right when crimping. I have 3 different roll crimpers. BPI sells a GAEP roll crimper and it is the best for the 410. The stainless BPI one is also good not as pretty but does a good job. I have not tried the one from Precision reloading yet. Smooth slugs really should not be in a sabot of any kind..that I know of. not with a rifled barrel.

    Good work, Josh! I have some of the Russian slugs casted up. I’ll have to load those from scratch.

    Nice. Good budget slugs if you mold already. Look forward to follow this journey. Thanks.

    Cool, your Federal wad is different than what we got in bulk packs and are strong . 🤷‍♀️ On the Winchester bulk it shoots great star crimped with a felt wad spacer under the slug. 👍 I leave both brand peddles full length so they blow off but will try some cut, glad you didn’t hit the chrono with the wads. 😂😂😂👍🕺🏻🇺🇸

    • @243Outdoors
      @243Outdoors  2 года назад

      Yeah I’m going to try not trimming the peddles next. Should separate much more reliably. I’ve got older and newer boxes of federal and Winchester and the are the same.

      Yeah no trimming saves time also, I’ll check another case to see if the wad thing was a fluke. 🤷‍♀️

    Cool josh. Im 🤔 on them. Bc here in pa are local shop from royal king to Wal-Mart full of 12ga in 20ga slugs and some buckshot. Cant find game loads or birdshot barely at all out run up to a sportsman warehouse. But got mess load of them from over years i bought them.

    I lube and smoke my molds lightly. They fall out when I roll the mould over after I pop the sprue.

    Hobo slugs are fun .

  • @showproja

    I make thousands of these for sale. The first few slugs are hard to get off the cold core pin when you start pouring. Keep a propane torch running and heat the flat nose only for about 3-5 seconds and they will fall right off. As soon as they start falling out easily on their own, lose the torch.

    I've shot both .690 Round Ball & 7/8 Oz. slugs in hobo loads, no wad trimming, both shot really well. I'll be trying the 1 Oz. Slug in a week or two. Mike

      I need to try not trimming the wads next. Had several suggestions.

  • @cw2a
    @cw2a 2 года назад +3

    I grabbed a 1oz version. It shoots OK but not great. .690 balls shoot better. (I was sent some to try) So I have a mold coming for that one next.
    Had BUKU issues casting that 1 oz mold. The ball wont give issues!!
    Yup UJ loves his "hobo" slugs!! Never really did that we just did waxers and cut shells. But same deal "cheap" slugs that WORK!! 🤘🏼🤟🏽🤘🏼🤟🏽

      Just something I wanted to try. Hobos are easy to make and I wanted to give it a try.

    I didn’t polish anything on my mold old timer told me carbon up your mold take a candle light it and black in the whole mold with the candle so you just run the flame tip over the mold the carbon makes a good release agent

    Perhaps a dumb question but..are these for fully rifled barrels or smoothbore? I ask only due to i see no "rifling" fins on the slug.

    Hey man so im trying to do this but my winchester super target birdshot wads seem alot thicker then yours with a lee slug in one and i try push it through my 12g smooth bore single shot it seems abit tight is that normal or should i try use a different wad thanks mate

    Is your slug barrelrifled or smooth bore

    If you don't have a mold, where did you get your slugs?

  • @bobg3633

    Why do you put the cover on the slug? When roll crimp?

  • @jmartin9059
    @jmartin9059 9 месяцев назад

    *.662" or .678" round ball might work even better, especially in the two piece federal wad with the center post. Post directly below ball center might be more structural support. .690" round ball is plenty snug...and might be a little too large. Consider paying the extra for a proper size round ball mold from Buffalo Arms or Pedersoli 'once' and enjoy it for many years. If round balls tumble in flight, who will know ?*

    How would bronze work for casting slugs

    • @243Outdoors
      @243Outdoors  Год назад +2

      Probably be way too hard. Most cases you want them soft.

    Only for target practice, not powerful enough for hunting, loads are less than 17 grains
