  • I play JS Bach's Heut triumphieret Gottes Sohn BWV 630 from the Orgelbüchlein. Preceding the Organ Chorale is the Hymn upon what the Bach's variation is based. This Chorale can be used at Eastertide, but in the Orgelbüchlein it is specifically earmarked as Ascensiontide.
The organ is Rotterdam, but you probably already guessed that :)
This performance was originally given during a live organ recital on 25th May 2020.
    Heut triumphieret Gottes Sohn,
Der vom Tod ist erstanden schon,
    Alleluja, Alleluja!
    Mit großer Pracht und Herrlichkeit,
Des danken wir ihm in Ewigkeit.
    Alleluja, Alleluja!
Dem Teufel hat er sein Gewalt
    Zerstört, verheert ihm all Gestalt,
    Alleluja, Alleluja!
Wie pflegt zu tun ein starker Held,
    Der seinen Feind gewaltig fällt.
    Alleluja, Alleluja!
    To-day God’s only-gotten Son
Arose from death, and triumph won,
    Alleluya, Alleluya,
    In mighty pomp and rich array;
His therefore be the praise alway.
    Alleluya, Alleluya.
Lo! Death is crushed-nay, Death must die,
By Jesus smitten hip and thigh.
    Alleluya, Alleluya.
Like armoured knight, with skilful thrust
Christ made His foeman lick the dust.
    Alleluya, Alleluya.

Beautiful! 40 days after easter, a remarkable day in the Christian calendar; and one with which we associate one of my favourite Psalm quotations "God goes up with shouts of joy; the Lord goes up with trumpet blast" (I imagine they were en-chamade) 🎺😊

Thanks so much!! Such complexity even by today’s standards. I wonder how transcendent this must have sounded to someone in Bach’s time. Splendid performance Richard!

Hey Richard what a nice surprise to find this Thursday evening 'lollipop' you have posted. It's a lovely offering for Ascension day and a great piece to listen to whilst quietly thinking of others and meditating the meaning of today. You make the organ sound so bright and clear. Thank you again. I am looking forward to Saturday evening with eager anticipation.

Splendid! BWV 630 sounds absolutely glorious on the Marcussen at Rotterdam and you both register and play it at the point of perfection, Richard. I enjoyed your performance very much and was all the more interested because yesterday, for the first time, I heard the Georg Andreas Sorge setting of the same Easter Lutheran hymn, so I have been able to 'compare and contrast'. I know that it is known that Bach and Sorge were friends, though I am sure Georg recognised he could not quite match the genius of his friend, Johann! A great choice of voluntary for Ascension Thursday!

Alas, the bad memories this piece brings back. In my mid 20's I had to play it for a Grade 6 exam and found it so difficult to sight-read that I learnt to play it from memory. Come the exam, the examiner harshly berated me for daring to use a, (frankly unnecessary by then), photocopied music score. Being un-nerved I was then unable to play the piece to completion and failed the exam. Although it remains a 'skeleton in the cupboard', it's still a joy to hear it played so well though.

How awful for you! Exam experiences can be real nightmares and it is a shame that this glorious piece of Bach is a reminder of that unhappy time.

Bach's choral relations are very few, so it's very helpful. I would be grateful if the score was a little bigger ...
