I've owned 5 80s/90s BMWs and always loved the E65/E66 series, but on my last purchase, I had to "settle" for an Infiniti G37x, which now has 242k miles and no codes or issues whatsoever. In the last 75k SPIRITED miles, I've changed the oil and the tires and the brakes. I've clearly missed out on all the fun! :-D
Good advice. It’s the same I give when people ask if they should buy an older BMW. I ask if they can work on their own car. If they can, the cost is comparable to any other vehicle. If they can’t, I tell them shop prices can be outrageous.
I see e65's all over where I'm from, but they're usually like you said, baller's on a budget. They're relatively cheap, and have a load of features. People seem to say they're the ugly step sister of the 7 series' family, but I love the look of these cars. The look is starting to look a little dated, but what can you expect, over a decade will do that to any car. I personally think BMW's design languages hold up fairly well against time.
Id almost bet money the oil issue is from bad valve seals. This is a PITA job!!! Took me 30 hrs to do mine with the AGA tool. But if u don't do it, the CATS are next to go, and they are more expensive than coke. Thanks for all the repair vids, you are definitely the go to guy for 7 series repairs.... But as for your sunroof drains, you have to drop your headliner and pull off the rubber hoses and blow them out with an air compressor, I had the same problem with mines
Jesus.... When you shot your rear tires, that is SCARY! Not trying to bash or anything, but in my opinion those wheels are too big. 19's are perfect for a nice look and good ride, better tread. Especially in a car this powerful that can pretty easily light up the rear tires. All that said, to each his own. It's your car. Besides that, amazing that you got to 200k on your E65. I think a lot of people just get lucky/unlucky with these cars. Contrary to popular belief, I see ALOT of these running daily. More than E38s and even F01s. So in my opinion they are not the unreliable death traps that everyone says. They are also quite durable in my opinion. One of my good friends has a E63 6 series, 2004 645ci. It has the pvc/valve stem seals problem. It's been smoking for 2 years. Yes, blue smoke. And he's been pretty much dailying it ( I know, pretty stupid when your car has that big a problem.) But nonetheless, to me, it's a testament to how tough these cars can be.
i replaced my 18" to 20". it reacts to steering quiqlier but ride isnt so smooth anymore. also i placed lowering springs. it is like a half sport suspension not comfort
the tire issue has nothing to do with the size of the rims or the car itself. He has Lionhart tires on, which is a cheap ass Chinese brand. A quality tire wouldn't go bald so quickly. It would be a good idea to run a square setup instead of staggered so you can rotate the tires and have even wear on all 4.
These cars are brilliant! I'm hitting 400.000 km (almost 250.000 miles) without any major issues so far. This is a E65 LCI 730d (with Hartge ECU). Other than a converter lockup issue and a change of timing chain it has been cheap to maintain. BMW's may be expensive to buy, but regular maintenance parts (suspension parts etc.) is really cheap. My only gripe is that it's a diesel.
I have removed the plastic covers under the hood and it feels a lot cooler when I open the hood. It is not hot as it used to be, I guess the airflow has improved.
drinking too much oil might be valve stem seals .if you still in idle like waiting for a train or long light and you finally take off and see white smoke its most likely those
this car is like a high maintanance trophy wife. talk about a money pitt,, u fix one thing and another thing pops up. my 04 745Li is a beauty but gives me too much headaches
David Robinson That's incredible. Have you ever had the dreaded valve stem seals problem? (Blue smoke out of tailpipes.) I have been in a couple of E65s, and they are great cars. Truly ahead of their time when it came to features, technology and design. Almost futuristic. Have any videos of your 745i?
The Man lol yes I have the valve stem seal problem on my car and I have plans to fix it in the future, I don't have any videos yet but I want to post some because I am a full time mechanic and I am extremely good at fixing these cars.
David Robinson Ok Haha. May I ask how long you've been driving it with that problem? Is it really as deadly and destructive as it made out to be? A friend of mine has an E63 6 series (645ci), and has been dailying his car for 2 years with the valve stem seals problem. It's still drives great, and aside from a bit of power reduction that he claims, it's fine. He's thought about replacing the valve stem seals as well, but he's not sure if he could DIY it like he has some other parts. At the price that shops/dealers charge, I flat out told him it would be cheaper to just by a used motor and do a transplant LOL.
it has been burning oil for a very long time and i haven't noticed anything go wrong other than the secondary air injection isn't working properly and it has thrown a check engine light on. i'm guessing the extra oil that is being burned in the combustion chamber has clogged up the secondary air ports in the head of the engine. i do believe that if i continue to drive it then i will damage my spark plugs and my catalytic converter.
Very knowledgeable and well said. My e65s driver side Headlight ignitor went bad and after troubleshooting and tearing headlight apart about 5 hours of my own labor replaced a 35$ component and now have my headlight back with no issues also did not reprogram. This repair at the BMW store would’ve cost around 2,000$ id bet. They would’ve replaced complete headlight and still 3 Hours of labor to change it
I appreciate your videos! That crunching sound on the driver's window is the regulator going bad. I suggest stop using it until you can replace. It is not particularly fun to replace. I had to replace both front regulators on my E65 within 2 weeks. BMW wants $500 just for the part. You can find aftermarket regulators for under $100
If the engine is drinking oil I don't think it is accurate to describe it as running perfectly. :) But beautiful car. You've done a great job maintaining it.
Mines over 200,000k and worst i had happen was positive crankcase vents go, flex disc on driveshaft that caused a shifting thump/driveline vibration, control arms due to bad alignment, electrical problems due to shitty battery, mine drinks a bit more oil then i think it should but nothing like some other people claim i certainly don't need to keep a quart in the trunk. I think i got a good one cause i drove the piss out of it early on with normal maintenance always in sport mode 86 octane gas and it runs like a champ still.
If you want a baller car on a budget I’d suggest about any w211 Mercedes minus the one with the m272 V6 which had timing problems. I’d prefer the V8s (500, 550). Not really cheap to repair, but they don’t break that often
I have a question I have the same car I just purchased why did you replace the expansion tank for the antifreeze can you tell me what was going on that you had to replace it
I have an 04 v12 E65 (yes SWB) . I'm lucky because I have a BMW backed warranty. My car has had most of your issues over the last 5 years. Also had a number of engine issues. The last one was the dreaded coolant pipe which is an engine out and heads off. 20 something hours labour. Only to have it happen again a few weeks later. It's disappointing just how unreliable these cars are. I think they break from new and do not get worse with age if you keep fixing things.
Andrew Thompson that's the reason I got rid of my 06 e65 I bought it when I was single and had extra cash. But as the years went by I noticed how much time the car spent in the shop or sitting in my driveway to get fixed it got so bad I didn't even trust the car to drive long distances thinking what else might brake in the journey. plus the parts and labor are so expensive the cheapest thing I ever bought was the wiper blades for $3 ea then BMW said they were no longer selling the blades you had to buy the entire wiper which then cost me $60 for the pair. it's just said how you buy a car retailed $90k+ and thinking it will last you a lifetime but then you see a family member driving a $20k car that doesn't sit in the shop getting fixed 70% of the time I enjoyed it for 8 years but man those were the most expensive years in my life I can imagine you with the v12 760 those are more expensive to fix good thing you have the extra coverage.
Dimmu Borgir I've been very lucky with the costs, BMW have lost out many times over on the warranty. It is hard to work out what is wrong with these cars as they are well engineered and well made. Each repair takes the dealership months to complete.
I have 130K miles on mine. Bought it with 70K. I hope to get 200K. Window regulator is cheap. You are using too thin of an oil. I’ve found I burp from the valve cover gaskets when using Mobil 1. About a quart between oil changes. When I use Castrol the problem is non existent and no oil is added between changes. Window regulator is an easy replacement. My drivers and passengers front had the issue. Initializing takes holding the button to the second detent until the window moves on it’s own. Don’t remember up or down. You shouldn’t have tire pressure issues if the current stems are TPMS. You can recalibrate them via the settings for different pressures. TPMS-Reset.
I'm not surprised I had some of those cars in the past I had a 745Li 2004 model you fix a dash light today next 2 weeks you get two more lights or so on, I'm done with those cars there pretty much disposable ones they hit 100k maintenance is crazy by the time you reach 200,000 miles you already paid for the car twice. #disposable
I love this car so much,my neighbour always lets be borow his,the long version,it s vanity on 4 wheel I freaking love it and they have gone down aloot in price but it s so risky to get one with high-mileage,my gut is telling me no but my heart is like omg sell your god damn piece of shit polo and buy one.I guess you only live once but eeeeeehhhhhh idk.
I'm really falling in love with this model. I want a red one with the style 95 wheels. I'm a DIY guy and I have a 98 740il now. I know these cars need a lot of maintenance and attention but since I've found this channel and guys like Bimmer Merchant and Nathan's DIY owning and maintaining my Bimmer has been a breeze.
I'm glad you posted another video! I feel like your car and my car have been keeping up with each other. Especially with the various maintenance items which your videos have help with tremendously. I have 170,000, so I'm a little bit behind you. The only funky thing that I can't figure out is that the heated seats in the backseat do not work anymore. Check fuses and everything, can't figure it out. Have a great day!
had my '03 E66 for 15 years and it still does everything it always did. It needs a new clockspring for the steering wheel and a recent passenger airbag light but other than that, it still starts, drives fine. Same tech has worked on it since I got it and he always says I got a "good one" but it has not been cheap to maintain since warranty ran out. That said, what else you gonna drive that is on this level for less than 3 grand a year?
Hi there. First off, THANK YOU!. Second, I was just gifted from my Godmother a 2007 750Li with sub 100k miles. Super excited for it, it's getting about 5 grand worth of work and new parts before she gives it to me. SO STOAKED!
It seems like you've abandoned the channel, well, at least the E66 side of it, but I'll be happy if you could answer one thing: do all E66s have the first gen mechatronics? ZF6HP26? With the 053 separator plate or without the plate?
Hey great video thanks. I had the same car. You mentioned the water leak when it rains. There are drainage plugs behind the front rear wheels behind the plastic covers that water flows from the roof through the a-pillars down to the bottom of the car. They get clogged and cause air pockets that makes the water back up and pour into the car. I had that problem when it rain or when I went through a car wash. If you haven't already, check those out, they need to be cleaned.
What year is this car? I noticed your idrive display is color not like the 02 version..will your nav screen retrofit into an 02 or is there some sort of upgrade disc needed?
Agree. I just posted the same. Mine would drink 1-1-1/2qts between changes with Mobil 1. It was about half a quart with Mobil 5-30. It was 1-1/2 quarts with 0-40. 0 quarts had to be added with the recommended Castrol 5-30. I thought maybe it was a fluke, so this time, actually by accident thinking it was what I used, I put in Mobil again. Same issues. Leaky valve covers, blow by in the PCVs. I will go back to Castrol next change.
Yep. It seems BMW has finally solved their oil consumption issues with the newest S55 in the M3/M4. Those motors have been run hard on tracks and despite that drank less than 1qt between 10k mile OCIs. Those that were only driven on the roads spiritedly didn't consume any oil between oil changes so that's welcoming news.
it's your window regulator it's about $400-600. to get rid of the hydraulic light put the key in without the engine on press and release on the gas 3 times then turn vehicle on. All in all that's why I got rid of my 06 e65 (147k miles) I kept having all those issues you're having I paid $1300 with parts and labor to get my ABS control module repaired. I can go on and on with the issues I had in 8 years of ownership.
DIYsavecash No problem congrats on hitting 200k I wish I could have done so myself on my e65 but the car maintenance cost was more then the retail of the car. Also check your parking break in the trunk make sure that it's not that that's damaged that turned my ABS/Parking light on along with others. You have to remove the plastic cover under the trunk floor matt. The mechanism for the parking break is hidden there. If your ABS module is not working then your steering wheel will be hard to steer if that isn't happening then it's your parking break mechanisms. Also the other issue that can bring up ABS/Parking break it's something in the steering wheel can't remember what it's called but it's some sort of alignment sensor you have to remove the airbag at the end of the day only certified shops can do this you need special tools.
You can get aftermarket window regulators for under $100. No point throwing $500 for something like that into a car with 200K miles. The $80 part will last the life of it until the engine is too far gone.
DIYsavecash I got the same problem with the window, i want it to go up but it does the opposite.. did u find out what the problem was??? And what do u recommend I should do?
I bought one for $600 im happy with the purchase it needs a water pump as we speak but for $600 and with the chrome and executive package. Tires and wheels alone are worth $500. This car has a lot of power. Drinks gas tank size is 24 gallons.
I found a 04 bmw 745li with 130k miles for $2,500 they said the only think wrong with it is the sunroof doesn't work and 1 window is hard to go down. I personally don't care about the sunroof not working. The interior is very clean. The motor runs good no smoke. Do you think it's worth $2,500?
My E60 just hit a hundred eighty-one thousand miles I had to rebuild the whole front end, control arms, thrust arms, and the shocks. The car is a 2006 E60 530i. I've just recently ran into the issue with the tensioner pulley letting the belt ride against the balancer on the inline 6 n52. I also need a high pressure line to the fuel rail. That was my fault for using the wrong injection cleaner. The leak started after I use that crappy shit injector cleaner that I bought. Other than that the car's been great. Oh, It almost forgot I had to replace the starter at 162,000 miles. I didn't did a transmission flush. Do you recommend I do so. The car shifts flawlessly. I can't even feel the shifts. However, once in awhile I do feel second gear shifting. But, that's about it. AC works, everything else works in the car except for the logic 7. It has an issue where I can't hear the highs on the passenger side and the SOS light is on. I also have the passenger restraint system error and airbag system error. once in awhile my passenger window does that error. However, it goes away. Not bad for a 12 year old car considering my truck the same age had cost me $5,000 it needed and got a new transmission, and most of the sensors have been replaced now and I'm still having issues with that Dodge Durango piece of shit! Also the battery referring to as a glass mat battery. You really should have stuck with that one! Because, later on down the road you're going to have transmission error codes and all sorts of codes when that battery can't handle the power that that car consumes. Take it from somebody who made the mistake. Also you might run into alternator issues. the battery monitoring system in that car is meant for a glass mat battery. Which requires a maximum charge of 13.5. regular acid battery requires a charge of 14.5. I could be wrong about the acid battery. I'm pretty close. I'm not sure if its 14.5 or 14.7. I do know that I ran into a lot of errors when I did what you did adding a regular acid battery. I forgot to mention the back tires wearing like that has to do with the rear end rebuild as soon as I got my rear end rebuild I have no more issues with tire wear. I got all my parts from FCP Euro they ran about $1,000 for a total package front and back. everything else is on you unless you want to take it to a place and get charged an arm and a leg to replace all those parts.
@Gregg. From my experience - I've run an e61 M5 for 5 years and an e66 760Li for 3 years. BMW AGM batteries last well. The original AGM on the 2007 M5 was tortured by two trackers going bad. I it lasted 13 years. Now I've fitted a new BMW AGM and car has been fine since. The e66 has so many electrical gremlins. Again another bad tracker. But intermittent waking issues no garage could get on top of. So batteries. Modern cars have sophisticated charging programs. Best to replace an AGM with an AGM, but to be sure. Get BMW or a tech with ISTA software to check the car's charging program matches the battery fitted and then register the battery. E60 are less complicated and have more inbuilt diagnosis. There are more of them and garages are more willing to work on them as a result. Back to car batteries: AGM last better, take charge faster but require clever chargers to get fully charged. I have had good experience with CTEK. The MXS 5 is good value. Typically AGM need a higher finalisation voltage and need a higher v from the charger to get fully charged. If you don't drive your car twice a week / over half an hour say then use a CTEK charger/maintainer. Some cars eg my 760 can be programmed to use either LA or AGM. The 760 can even take three different sizes. HOWEVER, BMW (now/recently) recommend using ONLY a BMW 019 AGM. This is a recent technical circular. (I decided to ignore this and fit a 020 battery but I have programmed the car to use this battery until a shed load of parts turn up to hopefully fix the waking issue. So people who poo poo battery registration are on a course through a minefield wearing blinkers. Your SOS light. Can you connect a bluetooth phone? If not your TCU may be the issue. Look for a company called MURA. mca.electricmura.ro They can repair many modules. DHL it to them and they send it back. I got mine done for £180 all in when BMW and local flashy garage both wanted £1,800!
I have 222 on my Li and it just started giving me all warning lights and steering goes stiff after about 10 minutes cruise control goes out speedometer doesn't work..alternater good..autozone battery says 84 percent when tested im lost..any help would be great

Just hit a little over 200,000 miles on our E65. Your videos helped me!
What’s up with that V12 badge..
Exactly 🤔
Must have 760i fenders
Good question I was 😡
These cars are brilliant! My only gripe is that it's a diesel.
wow! this was yesterday! nice! my mom turned 80 yesterday also! love my e66
I have removed the plastic covers under the hood and it feels a lot cooler when I open the hood. It is not hot as it used to be, I guess the airflow has improved.
drinking too much oil might be valve stem seals .if you still in idle like waiting for a train or long light and you finally take off and see white smoke its most likely those
Yes, some minor stuff I fix myself like halo lights, spark plugs, brakes, etc...
this car is like a high maintanance trophy wife. talk about a money pitt,, u fix one thing and another thing pops up. my 04 745Li is a beauty but gives me too much headaches
That’s because you have a 04 745 the worst bmw model ever made 😂
Not bad, I have a 03 745li (e66) with 211,681 miles on it and it runs great.👍
David Robinson That's incredible. Have you ever had the dreaded valve stem seals problem? (Blue smoke out of tailpipes.)
I have been in a couple of E65s, and they are great cars.
David you really should make some videos
it has been burning oil for a very long time and i haven't noticed anything go wrong other than the secondary air injection isn't working properly and it has thrown a check engine light on. i'm guessing the extra oil that is being burned in the combustion chamber has clogged up the secondary air ports in the head of the engine. i do believe that if i continue to drive it then i will damage my spark plugs and my catalytic converter.
"V12" lol
JayBadmon lol yea i dont think that's a v12 lmao 760 got those v12!
E65-E66 will take care of you if you take care of it. I don’t trust any bmw maintenance centers
They would’ve replaced complete headlight and still 3 Hours of labor to change it
Straw blower to the lil drain holes on each corner of the opened sunroof clr water mix and blow it clear the clog drains... Hope it help.
I appreciate your videos! That crunching sound on the driver's window is the regulator going bad. I suggest stop using it until you can replace. It is not particularly fun to replace. I had to replace both front regulators on my E65 within 2 weeks. BMW wants $500 just for the part. You can find aftermarket regulators for under $100
for the hood lift support, I bought a pair from ebay for $15, just snap off/on to replace, and it works great.
If the engine is drinking oil I don't think it is accurate to describe it as running perfectly. :)
But beautiful car.
No oil leaks impossible ! Do the valve steam seal it’s going to drink oil anymore also check for leaks
dont stop man. ✋
The crunchy sound is probably your window regulator
Is this car still running? What’s the latest ?!
If you want a baller car on a budget I’d suggest about any w211 Mercedes minus the one with the m272 V6 which had timing problems. I’d prefer the V8s (500, 550). Not really cheap to repair, but they don’t break that often
Have you ever been faced with the PT Can communication issue?
I have a question I have the same car I just purchased why did you replace the expansion tank for the antifreeze can you tell me what was going on that you had to replace it
Hello . Was wondering if it’s still a good idea to pick up a 2004 745li in 2023???
Have you changed out your rear air suspension? Any videos to this issue I have a 04 745i. Thanks
TPMS-Reset.
Oil should be 5-30.
The ememergency parking malfunction came up on dash I disengage it manually but the light never went off should I be worried
#disposable
Never thought it's drinking oil bc of your valve seals went bad long time ago???
If it's burning a little it's fine but if it's noticeable
I love this car so much,my neighbour always lets be borow his,the long version,it s vanity on 4 wheel I freaking love it and they have gone down aloot in price but it s so risky to get one with high-mileage,my gut is telling me no but my heart is like omg sell your god damn piece of shit polo and buy one.I guess you only live once but eeeeeehhhhhh idk.
I felt the same way but go for it
I'm really falling in love with this model.
Thanks for watching the videos:) I hope somebody can help us out that reads this about your back seat issue:)
had my '03 E66 for 15 years and it still does everything it always did.
A w221 S class
Cadillac STS also D3 A8
Hi there. First off, THANK YOU!. Second, I was just gifted from my Godmother a 2007 750Li with sub 100k miles. Super excited for it, it's getting about 5 grand worth of work and new parts before she gives it to me. SO STOAKED!
How’s the power on the v12?
Those rims are clean af!
long live the bangle butts !!
The ABS because the break oil is decrease just add more oil break and that will go
excellent video , non biased ,,
Chris your awesome great content superb quality videos.
It seems like you've abandoned the channel, well, at least the E66 side of it, but I'll be happy if you could answer one thing: do all E66s have the first gen mechatronics? ZF6HP26? With the 053 separator plate or without the plate?
Thank you sir do u have any new videos for your seven series
Is the 730d reliable?
Any advise on my 07 750 Li my rear window blind does not work
The engine is very good and strong. The problem with this car are the electronics.Bentley Arnage use the same engine.
Thank you for all your great videos!
Ansley Rabel "behind the front rear wheels"? I'm lost man.
Ah sorry man. The front wheels. The panels that go around the wheels. At the bottom behind the panels.
whats the parking break malfunction and how could i fix it?
What year is this car? I noticed your idrive display is color not like the 02 version..will your nav screen retrofit into an 02 or is there some sort of upgrade disc needed?
good morning thanks for all videos i have same car in white good day to all of you
Your welcome, glad the videos can help:) thank you for watching them:)
Did you have to replace the radiator fun relay? do you know where is it?
Switch to a thicker oil like 5W40 or 5W50 synthetic. In addition to that bad CCVs can cause oil burning especially BMWs.
I got a 07 750i but my radio n navigation isn't showing any tips how to get that taken care of that
Has your car ever had the electricity inside go out as far as dash going out a.c. not working wipers going off ? What should I do
What engine do you have in this car ?
it's your window regulator it's about $400-600. to get rid of the hydraulic light put the key in without the engine on press and release on the gas 3 times then turn vehicle on. All in all that's why I got rid of my 06 e65 (147k miles) I kept having all those issues you're having I paid $1300 with parts and labor to get my ABS control module repaired. I can go on and on with the issues I had in 8 years of ownership.
Sweet, thank you for this info, I'm going to try this today:)
Did you ever change your transmission fluid ..
I have a 2008 750 li and the engine cooling fan stays on even when I turn the car off, do you have any ideas or suggestions?
Why don't you use a 5w40 oil it's heavier and itll burn slower
*☀Men you🌞Teaching us Thank🗺 you🌅*
Do you have a video about not being able to fill your gas tank without stopping the pump and restarting
when dynamic drive starts to leak this can cause PAS fluid to be lost, no?
Are the fundamentals of the car good? Is it just the unnececarry electronic gubbins that go wrong?
Tyres or tires are knacked proper
Time for a new car bro... How the hell do you get that pass state inspection??!!
Doc Z WHAT ARE YOU KIDDING ME!! The only thing visible from the on the outside it would fail for is the bald tires.
Hi Kris
Do you still have the E65 ?
I bought one for $600 im happy with the purchase it needs a water pump as we speak but for $600 and with the chrome and executive package. Tires and wheels alone are worth $500. This car has a lot of power. Drinks gas tank size is 24 gallons.
My 750li haves 200k miles as well my trunk is not latching that's little cylinder looking thing just keeps going round and round any advice?
its the lower control arms that wears the tires
I found a 04 bmw 745li with 130k miles for $2,500 they said the only think wrong with it is the sunroof doesn't work and 1 window is hard to go down. I personally don't care about the sunroof not working. The interior is very clean. The motor runs good no smoke. Do you think it's worth $2,500?
Did you end up getting it or letting it go?
DrE38 Let it go. Found something we liked more lol
this car is praying to be utilized
Do all these cars consume oil
You should try dropping it. I bought sport bilstein shocks with my b&g springs. If you looking into upgrading suspension a bit
mine on bc coilover
Mark Ramsay how's the ride on the bc coilovers?
Moses Sisters your trifecta light issue is most likely the abs module. Known issue.
Make a video on replacement for valve stem seals
I have 222 on my Li and it just started giving me all warning lights and steering goes stiff after about 10 minutes cruise control goes out speedometer doesn't work..alternater good..autozone battery says 84 percent when tested im lost..any help would be great
Black on black yea that’s my style
I have a e66 06 bmw 750li a lighting issue with my exterior lights one of each light don't work any help?
Chris you take a good care of your car's but really man I think the E65 E66 are not relaible at all. I used to have one with the small engine 730Li it's has common issues like yours but not on the engine side.
Valve stem problem lol... or alternator bracket seal perhaps?
legend
im tryna get there with my e64 m
absolutely lovely generation of cars from bmw
wanna one day get an e66 and e61 too haha
Did you sell this car in SD?
