I'm nearly 50 and just NOW really diving in the rabbit hole and discovering the brilliance of this band. Perfect driving music, perfect chilling at home music, just world class musicians. I came from rock and heavy metal and still love all that, but this is such a joy to listen to.
It's all a matter of controlling the uncontrolable, all of the time, every single moment, so it seems, but in fact it's a matter of carefully choosen compression settings behind each and every microphone as well as proper sidechaining. Since digital desks offer a lot of slots for that stuff you achieve a sound so pristine as if recorded in a stuioenvironment. And lets not forget that all of those fellows on stage are pristine, excellent musicians, arrangers, composers who do have an clear idea of what a thing should sound like and how it can be achieved.. I love every splitsecond of SD Concerts. As close to perfection as can be. Love it. ❤❤❤ a LOT!
Thanks to the commenters in this stream. I agree with every word 100%. Steely Dan was amazing, even if one doesn’t care for their music. I believe they’re over the top, above average, like a whole other universe. Perhaps underrated, but definitely not in the critics dept lol
Couldn't agree more. Just saw Donald and group in concert last week, opening for The Eagles. Great set including OLD SCHOOL, my personal favorite, and a few from AJA (including AJA) , my favorite all around SD album.
Impossible to see steely Dan live and not have a fantastic time, saw them in 1996, what a show...the entire band is just so unbelievably talented, Becker was just a fantastic guitar player and Donald Fagan is just really cool, the riffs this guys plays on the piano and keyboards and that woodwind harmonica thing he plays, the man is really really talented

Steely Dan really perfected it this time. Managed to arrange the choruses and harmonize them better than in the original versions, and polish the instrumental sections, so they clicked in every time. No excess of crowd noise, and everybody seems to have left satisfied.
Seriously. They were big to me in the 70s as each album came out. Loved them. Hardly listened to them from 80's til 2021. Two months ago a young friend quoted Decon Blues in a text message....I started listening again on my high end audio system, and I haven't been able to stop since. Probably 100 listens in the last 2 months. Amazing songs/compositions/recording engineering. Seeing them this week, though I did have tickets before the pandamnic caused them to be cancelled. I never completely forgot them.
I saw them im Hamburg, Stadtpark the day before. It was raining so hard, but I didn't mind: This was one of the best concerts, I've ever seen/heard. I don't know, who filmed this, but I am so thankful, that this video exists. Goosebumps!
yes this is amazingly good they are so together and solo, s are great . I saw them in Vancouver Canada everything was like the record except reeling in the years wAS A WHOLE differant vibe and you can here it on ( A live in America)album. They also did bad sneakers that night!
However, there is a recording of the concert in Hamburg's Stadtpark in very good sound quality. In quieter passages, you can sometimes hear the rain pattering on the umbrellas. Yes, it was a great concert despite the weather.
I was 16 and 'Rikki don't loose that number' was played by "Indra and the topads" a party band in a pub in the north of Germany, way back in 1974.. my beginning to love Steely Dan, never forget that gig..keep goin boys..
Herrington has over the years slowly taken over the role of Walter Becker, as Donald Fagen at times found him "difficult" to work with - my guess is, that it goes both ways :-) Anyway, DF proceeded to use Herrington on his soloalbums, so the two of them established a strong connection.
This band is full of greatness...i would've loved to be in the room first night of rehearsals for this tour with all these great musicians putting this together.
😎 Thx for sharing! Great band, great musicians. On the other hand: live recordings like this and others make me even more appriciate the way SD made studio conditions (100% control over cross-talk!) one of the key factors in their outstanding song-arrangements.
