Iowa Football Offense Better or Worse in 2024?

  • Опубликовано: 6 июн 2024
  • Iowa football was the ultimate over-achiever last season. With an anemic offense and great defensive and special teams play, Kirk Ferentz and his Hawkeyes earned 10 wins and a trip to the Big Ten Championship. They amazed the college football world in 2023.
    MORE OF THE SAME?
What about the Iowa Hawkeyes offense in 2024? Will their historically bad offense be better or worse than 2023? To be honest it looks like rinse and repeat again this season even though they have a new offensive coordinator in Tim Lester.
    HAWKEYES HOPE?
However there is some hope because it looks like the defense will be really, really good despite the loss of Cooper DeJean to the NFL. That might be good enough to get some college football wins in the Big Ten.
In Buckeyes news, you can watch Ohio State football practice in style this summer. But it will cost you $50! We have all of the details here. Plus we have more recruiting news around the Big Ten.
Hey Wisconsin Badgers fans! What is former head coach Paul Chryst up to these days? He was at Texas as an offensive analyst but he is not there anymore. We will let you know what is going on there!
    PIGSKIN PICKS?
And we have our first week of college football PigSkin Picks for you to consider. After all, the season is right around the corner. Tune in to Locked on Big 10 with Craig Shemon.

The sum of the parts of Iowa's Offense is greater than what Brian Ferentz could realize as OC. The lack of production has more to do with the horrifically inept OC than it does the talent of the individual players. Judging any of those guys by the results of the last two years does those guys a great disservice.

Tim Lester is a much better OC than Brian Ferentz was. Tim can definitely improve the WR position and develop young QBs.

I think it's almost impossible for iowas offense to not be at least "better" than last year. Average is probably the celing, but realistically, it's going to be below average. That's still an improvement from nauseating.

KF said last year wr’s aren’t really a big part of the offense. Which means passing isn’t really a big part. KF will hold Iowas offense back and that’s why we get 5 loses this year. KF is the laziest coach in the nation when it comes to recruiting and portal transfers.

The state of Iowa has allowed Kirk to be this way though. Fans expectations aren’t big ten championship or natty. Winning 10 games against below average teams is Kirk’s bread and butter and he thinks Iowa fans should be happy with it.

Its fair to question this offense this year. They need to show up and prove it. That being said, they were ranked 134th in the FBS, absolute worst. They had a man in charge of the offense that never should have been put in that role. He is gone. They had a guy behind the center for most of the season that never should have been there. He is gone. With those two departures alone, I dont know how they could be as bad as they were last year. On top of that they had so many injuries last season, hopefully that wont be a problem this time around. I think the safe bet is that they will be better because let's be honest, there is no where to go but up.
As for Tim Lester? It's Iowa. Yes its a project rebuild on the offensive side but it's Iowa. Coaches know that you will be given time and if he shows steady growth year after year then he will be given the time he needs. So after that, he will have taken the absolute worst offense in the country and built it into whatever he is able to build it into. That will be one hell of a solid mark on his resume.
As for Cade? Got very little faith that he will hold up all season. The bright side is that they seem to now have a reasonable back up option with the transfer from Northwestern. Others in the QB room may actually get looked at as well unlike last season when the guy only got thrown in during the fourth quarter of the Bowl Game. They lost a QB to the portal because they didnt give him a shot when Deacon Hill was proving himself to be a turnover machine. Brian Ferentz was a terrible OC.
I'm sorry, I get that the common theory is to look at Iowa and say 7 wins. That defense is going to be dominant once again. The offense will be better, its pretty much impossible for it not to be unless it becomes riddled with injuries again. Their schedule is VERY friendly. This is quite possibly another 10 win season with the potential to be in the first ever 12 team College Football Playoff. It looks to be another season where Iowa football continuously makes a lot of money for folks betting on them. For whatever reason, the oddsmakers are just perplexed by this team.

    • @tylerbrown2700
      @tylerbrown2700 2 месяца назад +1

Immaculate, you are absolutely correct. This team has some good players. WR Brown has a lot of good skills, but he struggled in the old system. TE position is elite as ever. RB Williams is a solid RB 1 with other great RBs in rotation.
There is a reason why Sam LaPorta is performing better in the NFL then what he could do at Iowa. I think Tim Lester can really help with QB and WR development. 9-11 wins is absolutely possible given the schedule. I don't think Hawkeyes could beat the Buckeyes in the best case scenario.

I think you have to consider that the offense doesn’t need to become amazing. Heck it doesn’t need to be average. If the defense can keep it up like last season, the offense only needs about 20 points to win most games. Heck, Michigan only scored 26 in the championship. If they can go from 130th in the country to only 100th in the country for offense, there’s a chance for some good stuff.

if the QB isn't great at passing, and the recievers ain't that great.... develop a 4 yards in a cloud of dust running game. put 2, 3 or even 4 running backs in the back field and drive the linebackers nutz trying to figure out which one is going to block them, and who has the ball. passing would be screens and quick outs with a 5-7 yard gain goal. imagine a QB draw with 4 backs blocking in front of him....would be hard to stop.

As a journalist, once someone makes a definitive prediction they bacl themselves into a corner.
If that prediction ends up being inaccurate, the journalists credibility takes a hit.
It is then hard for the masses to take what that specific journalist has to say seriously.
