    I think they're actually considered a tri-purpose breed. Meat, milk, and fiber. Their fur was often spun into textiles and it supposed to be very warm.

      Coming from the Scottish Highlands that would possibly be a natural instinct. I hope they don't become extinct in the Highlands. But I've never been to Scotland. First time I had even seen this type was in the show Outlander, the cattle that broke the prison door down. I had to research what kind of cattle they were. The Belted Galloway are they the ones that are Black with white " circle around their shoulders.

    So beautiful. What a relaxing video to watch out on the back swing. Here’s a question for you. You seem to breed these with the intension for beef. Why do you name them? Is that any more difficult for you? Or do people usually name their beef cattle? Or do you strictly breed them to sell calf’s to other homesteaders?

    • @100AcreWoodHighlands
      @100AcreWoodHighlands  2 года назад +2

      Great question, we do raise some for beef. Those that are for beef we do not name, the ones that have names are intended to keep and breed. Although the majority of our calves go to hobby farms to be raised for pleasure, not for beef.

Primates have hair... we have different types in different areas but it's 1 layer. 1 type of hair. The longer hair is guard hair and the shorter layer insulating.

    Hi I took a drive through the country last week and noticed some 'hairy cows'. After I got home I looked them up and discovered they are Highlands. I am planning on moving to a homestead in a couple of years, this breed may just be the hardy 'lower' maintenance breed that would fit nicely into my plans. Can you let me know the minimum number to start a herd? Maybe go over the start-up cost and ROI? Thanks! My goals are to become net positive with each enterprise on the future farm / homestead. Thanks!!!

      Hey Robert, i'm glad to hear that you're moving to a homestead and interested in highlands. They can be a little more low maintenance and are of course awesome looking animals. I started my fold with 4 bred cows. In my opinion its less expensive to start small and grow a fold rather than purchase one. The start up costs can depend a lot on what you already have on the homestead. Is it fenced, are there barns, equipment like tractors and trailers? Also, prices for the cattle can vary pretty greatly depending on whether they are registered or not and where you are in the country.

    Everyone thinks wagyu & Kobe beef is the best in the world, but I disagree. I think Highlander beef is the best.

      Well why not. It's not a movie he's making. Isn't the purpose of these videos just more for information. But I don't know. What difference does the shape of the hat make anyway
