Thank you for the walkthrough through the menus and features! Especially the AF modes, since there's no manual out yet. I haven't used much 3D on the DSLRs, but it does seem on the Z9 this will be the most common/generic AF mode that can deal with many things. As to the display/viewfinder customisation: yes, 100 times yes! Especially as the "empty" display is now just a display mode, and not custom setting like on the Z6II. Looking forward to December!
Thank you, Ricci, for another great talk on the Z9. Your straightforward method of showing us what Nikon cameras and lenses can do is excellent. Happy holidays!
Great video Ricci. Just received my Z9 only a few days ago. So familiar yet so different. Looking forward to seeing your in depth details similar to what you’ve done with the Z6 and Z7. I know you’re busy. Keep going and I’ll see you again soon!
I don’t think the 3 d tracking will make it to our Z6II. I have a Z6II as well, I bought it when it first came out and I was motivated by the dual processor for the possibilities of future firmware update of getting the AF better. I don’t believe these tiny boost in technology will be for many many many months from now. A tiny boost I can see but that’s it. Even Ricci has said it can only get so much better because the processor on the Z9 is 10-12 times faster. This speed boost gave Nikon the ability to bring back 3d tracking. This was possible on DSLr due to the optical viewfinder (this the processor didn’t have to send data to a viewfinder monitor and write to the card a the same time, and the DSlR had a second AF sensor off to the side to just for tracking. Now that is built into the the mirrorless sensors and it is stacked interweaving memory write in the sensor allow for fast or read out speed to the memory card and a direct “thread” to the new viewfinder. In short this new Z9 is a giant breakthrough in technology. If nIkon could have made the Z6II better even 6 months ago they would have. They were getting there butt kicked for quite a while and getting their reputation bashed as well. The engineer knew long ago that cameras limitations. But I’d imagine like the Z6 the Z6II will get a little bit better. Nikon will push this off for a long time to get people to buy their new product as they need the money real bad.
@@JaspreetSinghArtist yeah this will add the algorithms but they won’t work very good. That’s the real problem. My Z6II experience is be freaky positive except for my birding. This camera is awful at tracking focus and that is no mystery to anyone. That’s the problem. You can do algorithms all you want but the performance is going to be terrible in tracking situations. If you don’t do sports wildlife or generally have to rely and any sort of consistent tracking professional even in wedding sutiations then it’s a No go. That why there is so many videos of adding photographers ditching the Z6/II because it missed crucial shots that they can’t get back. There are plenty of photographer that take photos of models and food and flowers and landscape and it’s great for that. But for what I do, I’m not excited about any new algorithms. Just my perspective.
My sentiments exactly. Not expecting the world but rightly or wrongly I traded in my Z6 for a Z6ii hoping the dual processors would leave room for improvement. You can probably tell I’m not technical, just a loyal Nikon user of over 30 years who couldn’t justify a Z9 no matter how good it is.
Very interesting and very Informative, as always! I now just need it yesterday! One quick Q, or maybe two. I haven’t seen any note of AF performance in video, does the Z9 AF in 4k 120? Good evening from Italy. I'd like to know if I can customize the BKT button on the left side to work as a metering mode selector. I just got word from B&H that they are not receiving the Z 9's until sometime in FEBRUARY! This news, just 2 days before they were supposed to start shipping to customers is a kick in the crotch to Nikon shooters. Why is there no official word from Nikon on this insane delay? They had to know this for weeks at the least.
@@escapetothesky In the U.S. at B&H (one of Nikon's largest dealers) they have been saying Dec 15th for over a month or more... and suddenly today I was told directly that they don't even expect to receive them until February. I have a query in with NPS on this, but don't expect much of an answer. This is shocking and poorly managed.
I fully agree the rollout is being managed poorly The sales and marketing team at Nikon did a great job selling the z9, but the delivery team sucks. However, I don't think B&H is always saying the right thing. Seems to depend on the rep you talk to. I have a pre-order with B&H, placed right after launch. I was told that I would get it by mid January. That was when everyone assumed that Dec 15th is the date. Nikon officially said Dec 24th is the date, so I am expecting delivery by Jan end. This February date .. could pertain to your order. Assuming you are NPS, since you mentioned contacting NPS about it, that date seems improbable, and perhaps a mis informed sales rep told you that?
@@escapetothesky Yes, I am NPS and placed my preorder right at launch. Agree that the story changes depending on who you hear it from. I need to just have a "be here when it gets here" attitude, but I'm not that zen!
Lots of flexibility and customizability. Does the Z9 support custom user modes, e.g. U1, U2, U3 ala Z7II ? I see it doesn't have the PASM dial, but I hope one can quickly call up a group of settings such as for action, or portrait, or low light. I use that extensively with my Z7. Thanks in advance if anyone can answer that.
Hello Jim, Thank you for your message. Regarding this matter, I’m sorry that we are unable to confirm all the specifications and features, of a Nikon product, prior to its full release to the market, In the case of Z9 camera, this camera is set to be released to the market in the middle of the month of December, at which time further information on this camera including its manual will be made available. I apologize for note being able to provide a more concrete reply at this time; and I an at your full disposal to address any further concerns you may have regarding our products. I hope this message finds you well.
we know this stuff already, what we really want to know is when does it ship and why is this such a difficult thing to find out. Nikon has produced a "professional" body but their approach is far from useful to a professional who cannot act like one without this crucial information. you do a great job and I realise that your hands are tied to some extent however that doesn't cut the mustard if we don't have the camera in our hands. what use is all this information if we are unable to use it. ? hype can only sell something if you actually have some solid sales data to back it up.
As hobbyist photographer and Nikon user, I am really excited that Nikon introduce this flagship camera to get back in the game (against Canon and Sony). But I just simply can't justify the price of the Z9. I just hope that Nikon is working on lower cost camera's with better AF; for us hobbyist photographer (Z6III, D500 mirrorless, etc).
I hate long RUclips comments. Now I just have to, so here goes. :-) Call me old-fashioned, but I´d still buy a _camera_ instead of myriads of auto-focus etc. gimmicks (would mean buying my old workhorse D700 again). This is software technology & programming that will ever so quickly be run over the next "big innovation". And to put this into perspective, the point is always the optics. The lenses. There´s no way to get past this fact. The camera is, and always will be, just as good as the lens you attach it to. I'd rather take an older camera body with a super quality lens, even manual. All the focus modes, pff-ffft... A photographer is someone who knows what the focus point must be after all. It seems to me that the best point of this particular new camera body is the ability to choose between the different RAW file modes while maintaining the max. Megapixel count. Also, the custom viewfinder/display options... There are just too many. It´s a freaking jungle! I grew up with a Canon A-1. There was a simple LED display for shutter time and the f/number. But most importantly the split prism for manual focusing, which was the only option. Yes, manual. One point only. This would be enough even today... Sigh. And why not name the Warm display colours just "U-Boat mode" instead? :-) Here's something for the younger people to check out: www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/companies/canon/fdresources/SLRs/a1/html/index3.htm And "Apply settings/brighten the shadows for live view" - what's all that rubbish? Why on Earth, b/c you seem to be able to select a f*g Histogram into you viewfinder? I mean, being a photographer shouldn't be *easy* for chrissakes in the first place! And, somehow, being able to dial in an exposure time of 900 secs (15 mins) is magically better than the Bulb mode, which has been used for ages, with a wire trigger or some wireless system? I mean, if you're an astrophotographer, the 15 mins is not nearly long enough a time to capture the movements of a night sky etc. Dunno, again. Let me give you one specific example: For the last century, there really was some magic (call it even artistry, at least personality) in capturing one single moment at eg weddings. With these kinds of cameras today, there's just no point of developing a good eye and a feel for things. Two people kissing - you had to be really good to capture the magic while adjusting the lighting conditions, flashes and all. I still feel it should not be about giving your customers 120 options of one SECOND choosing just the right amount of eyelash showing or the wrinkles not showing etc. Photographs and photographers used to be unique. Call me a whale, a relic of the past time long gone. Whatever. But photography-wise I've been around since the 70/80's, using both Nikon and Canon (also Minolta, Yashica, Cosina etc.). And, as much as I´d like to own this piece of thing, the price of the Z9 at the moment (January 2022) - which seems to be 6300 € - is just outrageous. I would call it something starting with B and ending with S. So, I'll stick to my old quality glass - and perfectly good cameras. No offense. Thanks. [edited only for 2021 being 2022]
Excellent video with serious educational value. Thank you! I do follow your channel religiously. A question on the Z9, as a flagship how is the focus acquisition with the Z Z70-200S compared with the D5 or D6 and AF-S 70-200 . I do not have any flagship bodies but use the D500 and D850 for wildlife and the Z6ii for travel. I am interested whether the Z9 is as "snappy" as a D6 when using native lenses. Thanks.
Thank you for using Nikon products and following our content. Yes, Z 9 is definitely "snappier" as a mirrorless camera, since less mechanics are involved.
It would be super good if you could have avoided clipping the audio Nikon.... Also why not record this with a boom? It's not a conference... Do you guys know what you're doing?
Hello Ian, Thank you for your message. If you are enquiring for the reasons of the focus points used to track your subject you can use Dynamic are AF where you can select a range of focus points. There is also Auto area AF which covers a wide range of the image sensor and picks up on a range of focus points, however the camera will automatically detect the subject and select the focus points accordingly. I hope this message finds you well and this information was helpful.

Does that Bee sitting on the table comes with Z9? Great explanation to make us what to expect from the beast.
Man, d10 I need on the Z7 and Z6 also! And Starlight View.
Thanks. As always love to see your videos
15:28 Finally! Thank you ! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Hello Ricci, What a great explanation of the Z9. Thank you for all your videos on this Z9 and other, Keep well, keep safe and enjoy make images.
Thanks great video and info að usual
Excellent video and comprehensive information 👌
Nice work, thank you very much!
Hello Ricci! how are you? How can I change Sub Dial to Sutter speed ? On Nikon Z9
I see the Z9 has the crop ratios of FX,DX,1:1,16:9, what about 5:4? It's not listed in the specs.
Well I started watching convinced I didn’t have a case need for a Z9, now I do!
I would love to know how it does with dynamic range and high ISO compared to other Nikon cameras like the z6ii and the z7ii.
Hello Martin,
Thank you for your message.
The only information we have at the moment regarding these 2 features are:
ISO 64 to 25600, in steps of 1/3 and 1EV, can also be set to approx. 0.3, 0.7, or 1 EV (ISO 32 equivalent) below ISO 64 or to approx. 0.3, 0.7, 1, or 2 EV (ISO 102400 equivalent) above ISO 25600; auto ISO sensitivity control available.
With an advanced noise reduction algorithm and in camera flicker reduction which produces exceptional results under the toughest lighting conditions.
A HDR life Viewfinder without blackout and up to 300nits brightness.
As for more information on the HDR performance, we don't have this information available as of yet but this should be available soon once the Z 9 is released.
I hope this message finds you well.
I want to have more information about image quality of z9
I am thinking of buying a Nikon z9 (future)
29:54, histogram + horizon should be mandatory for all EVFs and monitors. For some totally illogical reason not one single ML camera independent of brand (except maybe the Leica SL, I don’t know) offers that like so. Z9 first, I severely hope we’ll get this updated to all other Zs soon
It's an amazing piece of kit.
So proud to have been able to test not before global release.
You are so good at doing this 😇😇😇
Good evening from Italy. I'd like to know if I can customize the BKT button on the left side to work as a metering mode selector. I heard that Z9 has an amazing level of customization and the only thing that remained tucked in the menus is the exposure metering mode. Best regards - PS when will its manual come out ? Thanks
Yes you can program BKT button to metering. I’ve done this .
Superbe vidéo... Je vais le commander !
Think by the time you’ve sorted through all that the subject has one, flown, fled, died. Will stick to my film camera wait - and save . Thanks.
Great review Ricci
I just got word from B&H that they are not receiving the Z 9's until sometime in FEBRUARY! This news, just 2 days before they were supposed to start shipping to customers is a kick in the crotch to Nikon shooters. Why is there no official word from Nikon on this insane delay? They had to know this for weeks at the least.
Eh? Are you sure you asked for the z9 and not the z10? 👀
They expect to ship by Dec 24th.
I fully agree the rollout is being managed poorly
The sales and marketing team at Nikon did a great job selling the z9, but the delivery team sucks.
Hello Jim,
Thank you for your message.
Regarding this matter, I’m sorry that we are unable to confirm all the specifications and features, of a Nikon product, prior to its full release to the market,
In the case of Z9 camera, this camera is set to be released to the market in the middle of the month of December, at which time further information on this camera including its manual will be made available.
Hi, where do I register for Nikon Days?
Hi John, to access our on-demand videos, you can register here: nikondays.nikoneurope.com/2021/en
It really seems this sensor is a game changer.
Superb. Many thanks
Wow better background better lighting now we’re talking
you do a great job - thank you
I hate long RUclips comments. Now I just have to, so here goes. :-)
Call me old-fashioned, but I´d still buy a _camera_ instead of myriads of auto-focus etc. gimmicks (would mean buying my old workhorse D700 again).
:-) Here's something for the younger people to check out:
www.mir.com.my/rb/photography/companies/canon/fdresources/SLRs/a1/html/index3.htm
And "Apply settings/brighten the shadows for live view" - what's all that rubbish?
No offense. Thanks.
[edited only for 2021 being 2022]
Extended shutter speed must also come with next firmware upgrade to all other Zs 😁
What is the equivalent of group area AF?
Hello Ian,
Thank you for your message.
@@NikonEurope Thank you Ricci, I use a D850 all of the time for Bird and Wildlife and I only use Single point or group as that is what works best for me.😀
It doesn’t have inbuilt slow motion video capture... we have to do post production for making it slow motion... sick
A bigger picture will emerge once real world tests are made for its low light capabilities. That will be a crunch time. Also, Nikon chose to favor photographers when developing the rear screen. For a hybrid camera, that was a real no no.
Excellent, excellent. excellent !!!
You rock Ricci!
GPS ?
Hello Bengt,
Yes, the camera has built-in GPS to add location data to photos.
I always thought his last name was "Talks"... Hmmm Interesting
Ricci, so you can confirm that HE* is not mathematically lossless?
Does this Z9 classified as a professional camera from Nikon.
While Canon has no professional mirrorless camera.
The weight makes it the flagship. :)
audio way too hot
It may pay to wait till its in the stores.
Otherwise people will lose interest
Any one able to lip read? This looks like a hostage video with the audio swapped.
Bs performance of dslr f mount lenses from nikkor is not the same as the newer ones. Marketing lies as usual
👏🏾👍🏾🙏🏾
Does anyone even care when the Z9 will ship besides me?
Hi Michael, please keep an eye on our websites for updates on delivery timings. Thank you!
@@NikonEurope thank u, I just received my Z9. The Nikon website is ZERO help. The Z9 is really amazing.
@@NikonEurope thanks nikon, I just became a Nikon NPS member.
very boring watching you keep talking?
