I have been a Mercedes tech for 25+ years, and I remember the old M103 cam issues, and also the M1117 occasionally having cam and follower failures. BUT--these engines you are talking about are JUNK! It all started with the M272 balance shaft problems! The old M112 and M113 were awesome! Nice and simple, and reliable. Back in February of '19 I had to put a used engine in a 2013 E550 convertible and it took two tries to get a good used engine! Man, I can't believe Mercedes has these issues! But, here we are....
efaristo: you're a genius! Great advice about changing the oil more often to prevent enabling the excellent lubrication problem designed by Benz (I think Benz fluids are cheap low grade, short lived compared to Japanese standards) There is a OEM kit with the 3x check-valves and the stupid "aluminum screws" Benz had removed to ensure chain rattle caused by low oil pressure into tensioners at startup. Benz goes through great extends to create excellent problems. 👍🏻
Hi, There is a quick fix when you hear the noise. Order A2780504000 that is a valve that fits in the oil channel behind the camshaft tensioner on each side. You need a press tool to push the valve in position. After the valve is in place the oil stays in the camshaft adjuster and voila no rattle! Price for the valve 15€ the tool is 90€! Good investment works on AMG M157/M276/M278. I enjoy your work Tasos! Ciao from Stockholm
This may fix the issue, but not always. I have this noise on a M276, replaced the tensioners and installed the check valves -> same noise for two seconds on cold start. It looks like the camshaft adjusters now as Tasos describes.
@@maxg4958 Hi I have the same noise on my e 350 with 50k miles on it and was thinking of doing it myself. was it easy to put that tensioner and check valves?
Depends on your skill set :) (and whether you've got the tools; and do not drop parts in the engine.) It was easy for me; ordered the parts ahead of the work, and did it. The rattling is now half a second longer, due to the check valves (pressure has to build to go past these to load the tensioners). Hence, I will remove the check valves next time I am doing some work on the engine. (MB also advises that if the check valves do not improve the situation that these are to be removed.) While I said the camshaft adjusters could be the culprit, I am not convinced. There is another (3rd) tensioner, which could be a problem. Time will tell.

What is the actual noise we hear ? The timing chain ? Or the actual cam shaft adjusters making noise ? Is this bad for the engine ? Thanks
the noise comes as a warning for the phaser wobling... so it acts as a fair warning to get maintenance done.

I've changed two camshaft adjusters for the right side , and now i have sound on the left side. What causes
cause is prolonged use of a weak VVT design with low oil pressure... of course Benz leaving out the tensioners check valve help ensure dry starts 👏
