      Gabe and Kelly would have loved to go flyfishing off the NY Bight (right next to the Statue of Liberty and Verrazano bridge) for bluefish and stripe bass. You can hire private charters that do that.

  • @coohippo
    @coohippo 3 года назад +1

    @kelly young The orange thing with the white stripes is a steam stack that Con Edison (the main utility company in NY) installed on manholes that have a leak. It's a temporary fix until the leak can be repaired. We leave the manhole cover off to let the steam vent and the purpose of the stack is so that the steam doesn't obstruct traffic and won't effect the visibilty of drivers. It just basically keeps the steam coming out from the top of the stack, way higher than where people would be walking or cars would be driving.

    I stayed in Manhattan once about 20-21 years ago. These were my observations, some of them surprising, some not. Looking around at the cars and people, everyone was either rich, or very poor. The middle class does not exist there. Soot covered all the buildings, and the pipes and cables in the subway. When you walk around all day you come back to your room with a grit covered face, and smelling like diesel fumes. It was startling how little greenery there was, outside of Central Park. You could definitely feel deprived of natural life after a while. "Little Italy" basically doesn't exist--it is a street with a few restaurants, and is on the verge of being swallowed up by a huge Chinatown. Chinatown was actually kind of cool, though. Driving through Harlem (at that time) it didn't look nearly so run down or dangerous as one expected. It looked about like most of the city--only that the air smelled like fried chicken (I am not kidding). The Empire State building had a huge cage all around the top observation level, I guess to stop jumpers. There was no parking anywhere. Cars have this rubber armor ring surrounding them to protect from what must be frequent bumping and jostling with other cars in the crowded streets. If you see blond people they are either models, German tourists, or they (as I overheard one excited group of Grease-esque locals exclaim as if they had just seen Martians) "must be from Iowa, or somethin'!" The pizza is outstanding. Everything is more expensive. I kept seeing "New York: Capital of the World" signs put up here and there by the city. There are a lot of construction area covered sidewalks. People walk very fast. There is almost nowhere to use the bathroom open to the public, so you had better be good at holding it, or know places you can find one before going out. The view of the city is most impressive from across the river in Jersey.

    I don't want to spoil the surprise but if you look up the steam system in New York City it is very old and I think you would enjoy learning about who paid for it and all that stuff. Also, after the towers fell there were more explosions cause by the steam pipes collecting water at low areas and hammering the pipes apart which made at least one enormous sink hole that several houses could fit in. Worth looking up for sure.

      @kelly young This. NYC runs the largest steam system in the world. Think of it like a utility. Its used for heating / cooling / cleaning, etc. I believe its been around for a looooong time.

    That's a steam pipe from the city boilers that's how they used to and I think still do heat all the city buildings steam heat from a central steam boiler. That looks like an emergency relief pipe or at least a temporary one.

    The statue of Liberty, the original representation is on the left side of the balcony and more precisely above the central door of the Cathedral of Milan (Italy), dates back to 1810 and was made by Camillo Pacetti who gave it the name "The New Law".
