I had a Trane 1985 new, it was great, no problems. Now I have a Trane 2021 which is made from parts all over the world, it was a huge mistake. I agree, I have tried to call Trane and GOOD luck with that dream. You are exactly correct about the installer and his company. I should have done research.
I owned an American Standard 16 SEER 4 ton Heat Pump system; outdoor unit lasted 19 yrs. Indoor unit right now is about 26 y/o and still working; planning to get a replacement soon.
I got quotes for Trane and American Standard recently, same equipment and setup. Different contractors. Trane was slightly more expensive but I liked the Trane Contractor more and that is the direction I’m going.
Hey Josh, the Ameristar units do now have a spine fin coil, and are made here in Texas at the Tyler plant. I agree with most of your comments, however, with so many manufacturers having coil leak issues I would suggest to you, now more than ever, that it’s important to go with a manufacturing company that has experience working with all aluminum products. The only manufacturers that have experience, to my knowledge, is the American Standard/Trane family. As you know they have ALWAYS had the spine fin coil in condensers. Everyone else has a learning curve to go through. There is a reason they have always been rated as best with fewest repairs. Now with so many people putting different names on low end units, you should go with something you know you can trust! Especially with the prices being what they are! We have seen Lennox loose a class action over Freon leaks, and many others are going through the same problems! As much as they cost, just buy a American Standard or Trane that will last 15-29 years.
I have not installed an Ameristar unit since they started making them in America. What is the main difference between the new Ameristar and Runtru units from Trane and American Standard? If the lower end brands have all the technology that the main brands do, why have them at all?
@@NewHVACGuide not much of a difference in the new aneristar ac compared to run tru, they did go through a logo change and if you look up ameristar you’ll notice the logo now includes the slogan “by american standard”. What's the difference between the Trane XR16 heat pump and the XL16i heat pump? I'm needing to replace my 17 yr old Trane XR13 3 ton that recently died. I'm planning on doing a 4 ton for a 2000 sq ft single story in San Antonio where heat consistently goes over 100 for weeks in mid summer. I usually set daytime AC at 72 and 70 at night. I'm out on the west coast and appreciate your insights. Thanks! This video is perfect, because I was going to replace my 18 year old Trane with another Trane, though the suppliers don't have stock due to the supply chain issues. The company I use for service only carries American Standard, so maybe I'll go with American Standard.
American Standard is literally exact same as Trane just different color scheme. Source: I’ve worked at both a Trane dealer and American Standard dealer
Is a Trane worth spending the extra money over a Rheem 3.5 ton 13.4 Seer package unit for a rooftop installation? An HVAC contractor is coming over and is going to quote us on heat pumps from both brands. Which is more reliable and less costly to repair? Our 19 year-old Tempstar 3.5 ton 12 SEER heat pump has a refrigerant leak and not worth repairing. Thanks!
I appreciate the reply. From what I’ve been told where we live, it’s easier to find parts and repair a Rheem package heat pump, so that’s what we’re probably going to go with.
I’m in North Carolina and I have a 3.5 ton American Standard split unit with a zone board and it works perfectly in the summer. But SUCKS in the winter time. We usually don’t get that cold here but every few years we do get in the teens and that unit can not keep up. The unit breaks ever winter, and funny thing is it’s still has a warranty. But so tired of repairing it every year So I decided to go with a 4 ton ICP Split until and it’s amazing. Works perfect and since then we have yet to have a problem, (crossing my fingers).
I'm having a house built and noticed the evaporator is on ly 3 TON unit being paired with a 3.5 condenser unit. I was under the impression they should both be of the same size. America standard 14 Silver 4A6H4042G1000AC and Evaporator is TEM4A0B36S31SCA
@@NewHVACGuide I'm in the Tampa Bay area and in all my research, I haven't come across a warranty that good. I need to replace a 35 year old 2.5 ton Trane with blower in the attic. Can you give me a ballpark quote?
Just got a quote here in Southern California. 16000 for a Trane 2 stage 18 SEER 5 ton, 2 stage furnace, new lines, new ducts etc. Expensive but seemed fair
I think that is pretty fair depending on how much new duct work you are talking about. I assume you are talking a variable speed blower in your furnace with a two stages gas valves. How many btu is the furnace? 5 tons is pretty big with a big coil. Make sure to get a good thermostat with it.
No one is best in every market. For example, I have friend back where I grew up that will only install Trane where Trane is lacking as a supplier in my area now. We sell Daikin and love em.
Needed two units went with American standard 14 Seer silver series originally we were gonna go with the train top of the line it was $10,000 more justification just was not there to spend that kind of money.. thanks
I had a Trane contractor come out and gave me an estimate of 19k on a 14-seer complete system. He called me the next day and asked am I ready to start and I told him I was born at night, but it wasn't last night, he hung up on me.
Yeah I had a quote for the 17 seer 2 stage for $18k 3 ton. Insane. Philly metro. Another company had the 16 seer single stage for $10k. At least that was sane.
@@drsg9124 WOWWWW! Next 36hrs- Down in Texas-my contractor is installing new XR17 w/SV92 2 stage 5ton… 20K. Prices are crazy. Funny thing - Second bid- a guy was pushing York manufacturer- at $15k single stage. Supply and demand with metal and parts have consumers all over the place.
Hi,I enjoyed your talk.I have a Trane that is 17 years old.It is working ok,but I'm thinking about replacing it because of its age.Im thinking about Trane,American Standard,or Carrier.Which do you think would be best? Also I have single stage now is it best to get 2stage and variable speed?I live in Louisiana with a lot of humidity. All this is so confusing. Thanks for any help you can give.
Hello! Trane and AmStan are the same. That said, my opinion is they are better than Carrier. However, that’s just my experience. If your contractor loves Carrier, go with what they love. Humidity will be better controlled with an inverter system. It may cost more, but you’ll save money on your electric bills. The Cadillac would be a 20 seer Trane or AmStan with a Tam9 air handler, which won’t rust since it’s a polycarbonate cabinet! Just my two cents 🙂
Definitely get a variable speed blower on the air handler and at least two stage on the heat pump or furnace. You can get a great dehumidifier included that will pull off a lot of humidity. Insist on a good thermostat to control it all properly. All those brands including Bryant will be great choices. Get the best you can afford but avoid the HVAC companies that advertise on tv and the radio. You will pay through the nose. Go with a smaller operation based on quality, not overpriced junk.
I have 2500 sf under air single story house and may have to replace my 14 y o 5-ton Lennox, what's the best and quietest HVAC unit. My current unit wakes me up each time it kicks on at night. I need something quieter and efficient.
Look into an inverter system. My personal favorite for the price and quietness is the Daikin Fit. But there’s some other good options out there if you don’t have a Daikin Dealer local.
@@NewHVACGuide Yes. We just purchased one for our townhome here in central Florida. We don't plan to stay here long term. Our plan is to fix this place up and sell it in about 3-4 years. I was really leaning towards an American Standard Silver economy heat pump but decided to go with the cheaper option since we plan to move soon. I'm praying I've made the right decision and chosen the right contractor 😬
My HVAC tech suggest I go with RunTru 16 Seer unit plus the RunTru handler. I need my Lennox 28 year old system changed. Thank you for the videos. They are very helpful.
It'd be interesting to get some cost comparisons for a complete RunTru HVAC install versus say Trane and American Standard. There definitely should be some cost savings - especially if you're only looking at basic and mid-tier level units. They're not going to offer the higher end stuff like 18 SEER 2-Stage AC units. But they do have All-Aluminum coils and scroll compressors....assembled in TX. You hear about Evap Coils failing across all brands - why not save some money with using a RunTru and hope for a good 15 years run with the fancy bells & whistles and marketing ads? Of course - try to get labor warranty coverage and a reputable HVAC shop with good experience with the brands they're installing. Is your HVAC tech also a Trane Dealer? I know of a couple of Trane Dealers here that also installs RunTru/Ameristar depending on customer's needs and budget - so they offer both options.
@@Kenster-man Thanks Kenny. I need to wait on the RunTru till next season. His supplier is out of the 16 Seer and will be getting them in November.Everything is backed up. Being I live in Ct.,I will wait now till the spring. At least my upstairs unit is still working.

What's your opinion on American Standard Gold 80v - 100k, 5 ton, 21", Downflow: 1.00 Gold 80v Gas Furnace I'm asking because this is what an HVAC company recommended. Did a little research and it's rated low for energy efficiency.
So let me ask you this. If the sales person says we will sell you a Trane 16 for $10,900 and the installer shows up with an American Standard system I shouldn’t be concerned about the name being different?
Technically, the model numbers and the equipment are the same. However, that’s awfully odd that they would do that. Do you have a contract in place? To verify that they are installing what you bought?
@@NewHVACGuide It was a miscommunication. The system they installed was a silver series American standard and the furnace that they installed along with it made it a “gold package” the silver series and the furnace are working very well.
So you say train has the hood top and you can get it on an American standard. My question is is it better and I always thought American standard was a parent company why would they give baby brother the better hood?

@@waynespringer501 Out of curiosity - how's the new Goodman units running? With the heat we've gotten most places around the country, how did your new Goodman HVAC system perform? I'm also leaning towards something like a Goodman, RunTru, Comfortmaker, Armstrong Air, etc. --- to save some bucks versus paying premium prices for the premium names. Even with the premium brands they have issues whether it be leaking Evap coils or whatever and new stuff will probably only last 15 years. Then the more premium bells & whistles units may be over-engineered and damn hell expensive to repair.
Good information! I've installed 2 Ameria star systems one ac only and a heat pump. The ac only 3 ton 14seer with a lg compressor runs like a champ, heat pump had a lemon reversing valve but other then that it's doing it job for $. The run tru has a spinefin coil I think 🤔
@@NewHVACGuide I just was in the market for a new AC and HVAC company I went with a highly recommended company that sold Trane, Ameristar and Armstrong Air. Ameristar was still made in China as of June 2021 and is microchannel. They said they heard Ingersoll Rand was planning on making all their brands in America, but are waiting to see the tax structure under Biden's Administration and may stick with China or Mexico for the Ameristar and RunTru if they get hit with high business taxes. I was more in the market for the midline Armstrong Air, which most of their execs and installers have chosen for their own houses due to decent price, quality, ease of getting parts and low repairs for failed parts. I went with the Armstrong Air to replace our murdered top of the line Trane. (Loved the Trane, but a HVAC and plumbing company had to move the condenser unit to put in a new sewer line and they did not follow correct practices in removing the unit and reinstalling the unit and their actions led to killing the compressor).
@@ladykoh4678 How's the new Armstrong Air? There's a few good HVAC shops in my region who are also very big on Armstrong Air and really like them for their good pricing-value-reliability balance. They don't have the top-end super premium models you can find with Lennox, Trane, Carrier --- but have excellent line in the middle tier that meets the needs of a lot of homes.
Trane may be merging Ameristar & RunTru units to be exactly the same - just different labels. The Ameristar A-series is exactly the same as the RunTru units --- looks the same with the description except for the label. Both Ameristar A-series and RunTru are advertising that the units are assembled in the US.
@@Kenster-man Armstrong would be a very good choice; I used to sell it as an alternate to costlier brands and its durable and not worse than the leading brands!

Also I noticed the tubing stubs with service valves lil longer than most units that’s a plus but where they exit the unit the lip that’s rolled up on the bottom of the unit for support is cut out where the tubing exits puts the tubing real close to the ground because of this also metal bott on unit not plastic like on the Tranes
That’s interesting. I remember hearing in a class one time a manufacturer saying that they tried extending out the service ports for easier installations before and they were getting beat up in shipping and things like that.
Griffin Air LLC they are longer which is great , valves monted on a angle not straight up another good but they cut out most of the lip on bottom that is part of the base pan which lowers the stems of valves to the ground lil harder to braze in the valves , I just put on a slab still lower to slab but raises the unit up from the ground

A few years ago my 1988 AC system gave out. Compressor just spun a few times and locked up with a clank. It was all Trane and it lasted more than long enough. I called the company that installed it decades ago and they were booked up for weeks, They gave me the number of a former employee that was starting his own company that might be able to get to it. So I called and he said he could get to it in 5 days. So I spent nearly a week in a 94 degree house. No big deal. The morning he is to replace it he shows up and cuts the condenser loose, then tells me he can't get a 3 ton replacement since it is R22. Understood. But he said he can't do it today and he has a friend that can and can be here tomorrow with a new A coil and condenser for the new refrigerant. I said great but all he could get was Ameristar at the time. I didn't care, I just wanted AC. So the next day a guy shows up in a pickup, no markings or contractor # and does what I thought was a good job. It still works fine. I paid the second contractor and he said he would email me the contract and warrantees. He never did. This was all fly by night companies but it's working fine. Hey Josh, this is very informative video, thank you. Since you mentioned on your other videos that brands do not make much of a difference when comparing same specs apples to apples, and that installations play an important part in the performance and longevity of the unit. I am in Dallas area and planning to replace my 19 y/o HVAC, my question is, how do I know which contractor will do the best installation? Do I just base it from the their respective customer reviews? I have about 3 contractors who have visited and done estimates, but all claimed they have the best installation team. Do you have a recommended contractor in my area?
That is the question pal. I'd recommend having a good contract in place to protect you regardless. But check reviews and even ask for references if you see fit.
I keep hearing the same that it is all about the install. Does that include packaged units? My buddy says a packaged unit is easy to wire up and attach the duct work as it mostly comes ready to go. He does have a couple installs behind his belt where he assissted. Are packaged units as easy to install as he says? Because I'm really thinking of going this route after what I was quoted for a new unit. Thanks!
Never buy a Lennox I am in a nightmare I never knew an Hvac unit can make you sick and toxic. See Thomas vs Lennox 2015 and Allen Kelly installed the defective unit copper coils in late 2015. The blower motor burned up and put toxic fumes in home coils leaking, motherboard, and finally now their is a crack in the heat exchanger and i have no heat, only 6 yrs old 13k and AK will not repair it and passed us off to deal with Lennox which is impossible. I have been battling this for over one year. They took our good green money and sold a defective class action lawsuit. And we trusted them.

Glad I could help!

Why cant we get parts for our mini split that is only 6 1/2 months old and has been out for 3 months?
What brand is it?
Ive been recommended a american standard to replace my 3 ton 14 seer package
Why should I go with American standard?
What do you sell and why? Please list...
Thanks!
No rheem is better in my opinion. Especially since their gas furnace uses spark ignition over hot surface ignition.
I appreciate the reply. From what I’ve been told where we live, it’s easier to find parts and repair a Rheem package heat pump, so that’s what we’re probably going to go with.
I've had three lennox's they were all great
I’m in North Carolina and I have a 3.5 ton American Standard split unit with a zone board and it works perfectly in the summer.
Awesome! I hope it works out. I’m in Virginia and it’s been cold!
Justice4300 what’s your square footage? How many BTU heat pump?
I'm having a house built and noticed the evaporator is on ly 3 TON unit being paired with a 3.5 condenser unit. I was under the impression they should both be of the same size. America standard 14 Silver 4A6H4042G1000AC and Evaporator is TEM4A0B36S31SCA
What I wanted to hear is what brands you DO sell and WHY? That would have been really helpful.
We are a Daikin Comfort Pro. 12 year parts and labor warranty 🙂
@@NewHVACGuide I'm in the Tampa Bay area and in all my research, I haven't come across a warranty that good. I need to replace a 35 year old 2.5 ton Trane with blower in the attic. Can you give me a ballpark quote?
Every market and system is different but I’d guess reusing the same ductwork, you’d range from 6 to 12 grand depending on which seer you go with.

About to get a 3 ton RunTru heat pump and air handle installed this morning. The price and 10/5year warranty is what hooked me.

I said no way Jose.
Since you are in VA, can you recommend a good contractor to install a new 4 ton unit in 22031 area?
Unfortunately I don’t know anyone in Northern Virginia. So sorry

@@NewHVACGuide thank you so much it's between trane and amana, atm I'm leaning towards trane

Check our their websites. A lot of info can be found on both

Find a good company and go with what they recommend
What brand do you sell and why? American Standard, Carrier ,Lennox, Daiken which best?
No one is best in every market. For example, I have friend back where I grew up that will only install Trane where Trane is lacking as a supplier in my area now.
We sell Daikin and love em.
Needed two units went with American standard 14 Seer silver series originally we were gonna go with the train top of the line it was $10,000 more justification just was not there to spend that kind of money.. thanks
You’re welcome!
In my area it’s literally same supplier for Trane and American Standard
Oh crazy. I see that with Carrier and Bryant but not Trane here.
It’s crazy how cheap some people are in some markets and how expensive others have gotten

Quick question, what are your thoughts on the older Ameristar 14 Seer 2.5 Ton Heat pump units? Thank you for all you do! 🙏🏿
The Midea ones? The were okay for the price point.
@@NewHVACGuide Yes. We just purchased one for our townhome here in central Florida. We don't plan to stay here long term. Our plan is to fix this place up and sell it in about 3-4 years. I'm praying I've made the right decision and chosen the right contractor 😬
My HVAC tech suggest I go with RunTru 16 Seer unit plus the RunTru handler. I need my Lennox 28 year old system changed. Thank you for the videos. They are very helpful.
Thanks pal.

@@NewHVACGuide it would be with an electric furnace
@@jessenoble1399 electric furnace has heat strips that draw a lot of energy. I would pair it with a heat pump so you are not running on heat strips on mild days. The best unit on the market performance wise to be paired with these types of setups has been the 18 SEER Bosch.

What's your opinion on American Standard Gold 80v - 100k, 5 ton, 21", Downflow: 1.00 Gold 80v Gas Furnace
I'm asking because this is what an HVAC company recommended. Did a little research and it's rated low for energy efficiency.
It’s rated low because of the AFUE rating. High-efficiency furnaces are going to have a 90% or higher AFUE rating

RunTru outdoor units have the spine fin coil
I know now. RunTru was pretty new when I made that vid. But thanks pal!
I’ve been told the new Ameristar and Runtru systems are both spine fin coil. Is that not the case?

The Run Tru has a Spine Fin Coil put a few in also no pressure switches lil cheaper made but seems decent
Have you put any of them in?
I’m just curious how folks are liking them
Also I noticed the tubing stubs with service valves lil longer than most units that’s a plus but where they exit the unit the lip that’s rolled up on the bottom of the unit for support is cut out where the tubing exits puts the tubing real close to the ground because of this also metal bott on unit not plastic like on the Tranes

Thanks!
Are oxbox a good ac
They're a builder grade brand. Are you comparing them to anyone else?
Trane is an old Indian term meaning "no parts available"
Never buy a Lennox I am in a nightmare I never knew an Hvac unit can make you sick and toxic. See Thomas vs Lennox 2015 and Allen Kelly installed the defective unit copper coils in late 2015. They knowingly sold us a defective unit.
When I call contractor I ask to bring EPA Universal, tank of dry nitrogen and recovery machine guess what from 10 companies only 1 show up. I 100% agree you need good contractor and it is hard to find them. Hey I do not mind to pay high bill but do it right.
