Also something that Andre didn't mention, because the switch uses the gyros to simulate pointing you don't have to point at the screen. Anywhere you point the joycons i.e the floor maybe, when you press the + it recalibrates and makes that position the center. This means unlike the Wii, you don't have to wear your arms out constantly pointing at the screen, you just drop your arm in any position make that the center and still move the pointer.
If you wore your arms out constantly pointing at the screen, you had your Wii set up incorrectly. There was stuff in system settings to move the pointer up or down relative to where you were holding it, so you could put it in your lap where it belongs and then properly align the pointer vertically.
Potentially... But this is replicating an IR pointer. That's a huge difference from the MotionPlus technology used for Skyward Sword. I'm not an expert on the technology though so I don't know how likely that is.
They actually started implementing non-IR pointing as early as Skyward Sword. Cursor control in that game was based on motionplus instead of using the IR camera & sensor bar. Later on, Pikmin 3 used a hybrid setup-- it would use the bar to auto-calibrate, but you could then block the wiimote's camera with your hand and the pointer would still work. So really, this is kind of the endpoint of tech they've been iterating on for a while-- pointing without any initial visual reference. Neat stuff!
It would be neat stuff if the gyroscope wasn't a step back in accuracy compared to the IR system. Remember the last time you had to press + or any other button to recalibrate in a game that used the IR pointer? I don't, because it never happened.

Fantastic video! I have been really curious how pointer controls would work on the Switch without IR. So essentially, a similar experience is emulated using gyroscopic technology.. interesting. I wanted to see a sensor bar and the ability to use the tablet like a gamepad from the Wii U, but I expect that Nintendo expected people would feel like the console is too similar to the Wii and Wii U, even when those are literally more features. I know I would be happy with those two changes but there are many who would instantly associate using the tablet like a gamepad as similar to the Wii U and may not even buy let alone enjoy the console based on that single opinion.
The reason you can't use the tablet as a gamepad is because the system would have to render both 1080 for the television AND 720 for the tablet at the same time. There's no way the system can handle that, especially not in portable mode. It's not because Nintendo chose not to, it's because it's not possible.
I can't think of a logical way that they could have done it but it most definitely is possible. Its just that every way that I think of costs more money probably bringing the system up to $400. Nintendo obviously wanted to shoot for sub $300 anyway so having a $400 system just wouldn't sell. They chose not to have a $400 system and although that was the right decision for Nintendo, I still want to see an option that costs more that allows me to have a map on the tablet and the game on the TV. Just saying that's what I want, and it is possible but it won't happen.
4:33 The reason for this is because the game isn't tracking your cursor position when it's far offscreen, but with my idea I'll account for this, especially for stuff like the multi-hiding system in Time Crisis 4.
But why is this so amazing? The Wii U Gamepad did this 5 years ago. Now these are only small wii remotes with the wii u gamepad technology in it. I personally was surprised by the pro controller having motion controls since thats the first normal controller with these. But noone seems to be surprised by that, rather "omg it costs 70 bucks, what the hell?"
Ok, so Sony won't even make a new handheld, so a ripoff of the switch is off the table, Microsoft it's not them who'll make a ripoff, but Alienware with the UFO, a very Switch like system (it even has its own version of Joycons too) it runs windows 10, there's also the GPD win systems but they look like a 3ds (just with 1 screen) and run windows as well (it can be connected to a TV so it counts)
I cant believe so many people have never seen this before! My TV has this feature built into the remote for navigation of the OS. It's extremely simple and shouldn't even need calibration. To activate the pointer on my TV you either shake the remote of press select at any time and it spawns a pointer in the middle of the screen. If you move it beyond the screen, it hangs so that you can reposition it correctly like a PC mouse. It's something I've become so numb to that I forgot so many people have never even heard of this concept. It really should be a feature of the switch OS at least, same deal, a simple shake of the remote to spawn the pointer and bind the pointer to the screen like a PC mouse so you can freely reposition yourself and always have a correctly positioned pointer.
Ya I saw that it was getting off does it work yes is it as good as the original Wii remote oh god no the sensor bar made sure it didn’t drift off like it does when you use a pointer on the switcj
Lachy Conway Wii Sports/Wii Sports Resort had effort put into it, 1-2 Switch is Nintendo's 59.99€ attempt at making shovelware. Now you know the difference.
A correction on Skyward Sword's use of the IR camera: It doesn't automatically recalibrate during gameplay; it only checks the IR during the "Point at the screen, press A" screens. So it had the same drift problem as the Switch, only it was more annoying if you wanted to play off-angle, since it forced you to point at the screen. EDIT: Apparently, I recalled this incorrectly. Never mind.
Sure, because the fact that the system architecture in the Switch is completely incompatible with that of previous Nintendo systems doesn't have anything to do with it...
+_ _ Emulation isn't technically backwards compatibility but yeah, the Switch should be able to emulate anything up to and including the Wii. I doubt that it's powerful enough to emulate a Wii U though, but wouldn't be compatible anyway since the Switch can't replicate the gamepad second screen feature. +RaichuZX LOL, sure...
+_ _ But there's one very important difference: emulation means you're limited to what Nintendo decides to make available while the entire point of backwards compatibility is that it lets you take any software you purchased for an older system and run it natively on the newer system.
+MLennholm, +Kevboard Arts, El Hefe said this is a mysterious feature of Switch not gyro sensors. They(nintendo) didn't show it on any of the presentations afaik. Most people could think of using gyro sensors this way but no one could predict it being used on Switch until a proper presentation, which Nintendo sucks at for sure.
In Skyward sword I never pointed the remote at the screen. Whenever you would pull out an item wherever you had the remote would then be considered neutral. Worked great for me. I think most people weren't aware that the game used gyro controls instead of ir controls and that led to some control frustration (e.g. If you pull the slingshot out and then raise your remote to the screen after it would make the aiming go nuts requiring you to press the reset button).
To those asking for Wii VC on switch: The main problem is that gyro is known for being inaccurate (especially when compared to the IR sensor used on Wii and Wii U). Gyroscopes tend to drift left and right because they have no real centerpoint to go off of. Perhaps if there was a "Hold + button to recenter joycon" prompt, it could be achievable, but it still wouldn't compare to the Wiimote's IR sensor in terms of accuracy.
Xyphire The Wind I know. I've read online about Europe being restocked in a lot of places, but I live in the United States, so that won't help me unfortunately.
I can't find one either; I just want to play Zelda! So tempted to buy the Wii U version, but I will wait so I can have it portable since I am getting the Switch ASAICFI (As soon as I can find it!).
This basically sets up Skyward sword HD or other good titles with pointing and motion controls like Galaxy 1+2, etc. This makes me super hyped for the new switch launches
That's actually pretty good! Too bad Europe and Australia didn't get World of Goo or Little Inferno on the Switch this week. But hopefully we will get them both next week as Little Inferno is already scheduled for a European release on the 23rd of this month according to the eShop menu.
What a great video! I am watching this in anticipation of super Mario 3d all stars to try and see how the pointer controls for Galaxy would work. Seems like they will work very well since this isn't the first time the switch has done controls like this! I'm super excited to play Galaxy again on the switch!!!
It's like in Skyward Sword, where it doesn't utilize the same sensor-tech as the Wii remote, but rather uses the gyroscope inside to calculate the aiming on the screen from how you're rotating the controller.
Ukulele Pichu 64 I put it on the bottom so it doesn't, you know...fall. It also allows me to sit down in front of the T.V. while playing with motion controls.
I really love pointing the Wii remotes on the screen in games like zelda Twilight Princess and Trauma Center but I am not a fan of games that uses wiimotion+ because it doesn't really care about the sensor bar. The pointing is mostly taken care of with the technology inside the controller rather than the sensor bar resulting in a far less precise and accurate experience. In games like Zelda skyward sword you have to constantly re-calibrate the wii remote with the down button to re-center the aiming reticle when you get out your bow. Seems like the switch is basically doing the same thing so I don't have my hopes up.
I think you were mixing up the gyroscope and accelerometer. The accelerometer creates the heavy positional drift you see since it is based off of relative movements. The gyroscope is less prone to drifts (which is why it can be used as a compass).
This is why the Wii was so successful. Simple pointer controls that didn't need re-centering. The Gyro controls for the joycons and switch pro controller are great for lining up shots but you have to recenter which can be frustrating when playing Splatoon 2.
That's not actually what Gyroscopes do. Gyroscopes can detect changes in rotation but they can't detect changes in position. That's what accelerometers do. Accelerometers can detect acceleration and combining the two can give you information about the exact Position and Rotation of a device relative to a point. That's what callibration does.
Basically the same gyroscope controls that are in Skyward Sword and Splatoon. Never doubted this was possible. Still it's good that we will able to have Wii games ported to the Switch. Hopefully Zak & Wii and Okami get put on the system in HD I'd love that.
The Joy-Con contains both a gyroscope and accelerometer. Also, while it's certainly responsive and accurate enough for a game like World of Goo, or even something like Splatoon 2 (in conjunction with the analog stick in that case of course), it wouldn't be ideal for most full-on dedicated fps games like GoldenEye 007 Wii (thinking about multiplayer especially) or actual arcade gun games like House of the Dead: Overkill for example. You need to play one of those gun games on Wii using the pointer-try Ghost Squad for example-and then try something similar with the Joy-Con on Switch to really see the difference. The difference is absolutely there and it does make a difference. So, yeah, for a whole bunch of cursor-style games the Switch's particular solution will be just fine, but there's still a selection of Wii games where it would definitely struggle to do them full justice.
Need a USB sensor bar you mount to your chest to work with the right joycon. And then third parties will make a Bluetooth sensor bar. Only one game will support it, a minigame in 3,4,switch where you see who can digest a burger the fastest.
Skywards Sword HD... I'm calling it right now... We've already got Windwaker HD and Twighlight Princess HD... Plus, the confirmation of the Switch having slightly better motion controls pretty much gives it away....
Its so accurate as the mouse moves as his hand stops, Its not really that crazy and your telling it where the screen is when you hit +. Its just a nice way of tricking the user into thinking that your accurately pointing at the screen.
I loved punch out on the Wii. my only complaint is that when I played with only the nunchuck i had to keep my hand/fingers off the ir sensor, which made for a awkward placement and made fighting sandman a trail. I only mention this because I would like a port of punch out to be on the switch in the future and be exclusively for the controls. (c'mon Mac let's take on the next console!)
Calibration issues aside, the Switch's pointer controls are actually a _substantial_ improvement over the Wii's. Just look back at the beginning of the video and check out all the input lag that's almost entirely absent in the Switch footage. Very impressive.
The right joycon does have an infrared camera though. (and according to rumours it's closer to being a mini- kinect than the kind of sensor the Wii had) - It makes you wonder what that's capable of, but to use it like the sensor on a wii remote would require holding it upside down Which works pretty well I find, if you hold it in the opposite hand from normal... (though it becomes impossible to use the trigger buttons.) Lots of weird little things huh...
"There's no sensor bar!" ~Andre, 2017, Sensor bar on top of the screen :D I know it wasn't meant that way when you said it but I thought it was funny anyway :D
Most people were thinking gamecube emulation on the switch. When they revealed that the joy con have motion controls, i immediately thought wii emulation
I can see Nintendo implementing this for Virtual Console releases of Original Wii games (Digital Foundry proved that with a little optimization, the Switch can handle emulating most Wii and GameCube titles at 1x native resolution at the very least).
If the pro controller has the same sort of pointing functionality, I'm going to have a field day whenever a Pikmin game comes out for the Switch. Superior Wii pointer controls on top of the familiar gamecube controls? Yes please.
I can’t wait to save enough to get a switch. I can’t believe they put world of goo on there. I love that game but I never got to play it (aside from the demo).
IMU modules are pretty temperature sensitive. I wonder if some of that drift is due to heat transfer from your hand. That would cause it to drift more as it was heating up, but then stabilize after peaking.
The Wii U gamepad had gyros but it also had a magneto meter which they used to automatically calibrate the gyro. I wish they did the same thing with the Joycons, but I get the feeling they ran out of room to fit it in
Wow, the gyros get uncalibrated from the screen really easily. Galaxy on Switch is going to be really annoying to collect star bits: on Wii, you could quickly twitch the wiimote to collect the star bits, whereas that is exactly the action that causes drift in the gyro calibration. :( I had never thought about the auto-calibration that the MotionPlus gyros use the IR camera for, that really makes the Switch gyro implementation far inferior.
saying "it works pretty well" while constantly having to recalibrate it gyro controls are step back from camera based controls and I'm really surprised that they didn't just give the camera a wider field of view or improve the technology in some other way
Also something that Andre didn't mention, because the switch uses the gyros to simulate pointing you don't have to point at the screen. Anywhere you point the joycons i.e the floor maybe, when you press the + it recalibrates and makes that position the center. This means unlike the Wii, you don't have to wear your arms out constantly pointing at the screen, you just drop your arm in any position make that the center and still move the pointer.
The MotionPlus for the Wii acts the same way.
link2dpast Very true, good point!
SacredYinZekrom True, but it generally uses the sensor bar to calibrate too. Otherwise fast motions mess it up.
You could even have more interesting movement this way, such as stirring things while pointing at the floor.
If you wore your arms out constantly pointing at the screen, you had your Wii set up incorrectly. There was stuff in system settings to move the pointer up or down relative to where you were holding it, so you could put it in your lap where it belongs and then properly align the pointer vertically.

I just use motion for small adjustments because the analog isn't too good.
(that's because gyro controls are actually pretty terrible but a lot of people don't like to admit it)
If you know how to use it it makes the shooting games in both OoT and especially MM significantly easier.

I personally was surprised by the pro controller having motion controls since thats the first normal controller with these. But noone seems to be surprised by that, rather "omg it costs 70 bucks, what the hell?"
Should I get the Switch, or wait for Microsoft and Sony's ripoffs?
Coleman Christy get switch, sony has bailed the handheld market and MS has 0 interest in it because they're to busy making Xbox more like a shit PC.
Switch because you get one thing the others do not and will not have...Nintendo 1st parties.
Definitely Switch
Goo Planet I heard they’re planing to release the 1Xx_XboX_xX1 next year.
"It worked perfectly."
Yeah, I dunno about that.
Ya I saw that it was getting off does it work yes is it as good as the original Wii remote oh god no the sensor bar made sure it didn’t drift off like it does when you use a pointer on the switcj
Thanks for this video. I was curious about this.
Wii VC, here we go.
I really hope they put a new Wii sports on the switch but if it's on the switch and not the Wii what would it be called
It's called 1-2-Switch lmao
ll novawing ll yeah but it doesn't have like sports games
I ment like all the games on Wii sports like baseball boxing bowling golf and tennis
Joey Futrell call it Switch Sports and it would sell millions!
Never mind.
I definitely remember testing it when it came out, and to my recollection, it recalibrated even during gameplay
Oh. I guess I was wrong, then.
I might have been mixing it up with how some things get stuck with drift, like the beetle.
Nintendo removes any excuse for not having backwards compatibility
Sure, because the fact that the system architecture in the Switch is completely incompatible with that of previous Nintendo systems doesn't have anything to do with it...
MLennholm my dad works at Nintendo and actually they put 2 Wii's inside every switch so checkmate
Umm no second screen, no disc slot
bro at 1:30 can this dude fucking talk 😂
Jesus, we have the Switch and it still has mysterious features.
We already knew the Switch has gyro and accelerometer based motion controls. This is just a utilization of that, nothing mysterious about it.
I have to do homework, GameXplain needs to stop uploading lol
To those asking for Wii VC on switch:
The main problem is that gyro is known for being inaccurate (especially when compared to the IR sensor used on Wii and Wii U). Gyroscopes tend to drift left and right because they have no real centerpoint to go off of.
Perhaps if there was a "Hold + button to recenter joycon" prompt, it could be achievable, but it still wouldn't compare to the Wiimote's IR sensor in terms of accuracy.
still can't find a switch in stock...
Xyphire The Wind you did great on english
Xyphire The Wind I know. I've read online about Europe being restocked in a lot of places, but I live in the United States, so that won't help me unfortunately.
I can't find one either; I just want to play Zelda! So tempted to buy the Wii U version, but I will wait so I can have it portable since I am getting the Switch ASAICFI (As soon as I can find it!).
TheSpeedymouse same. literally, exactly the same for me
There is reason to believe a restock will happen on April 15
I just witnessed a traumatizing advertisement for ben10 action figures; I want to die.
World of Goo is what my bedroom looks like after watching porn.
ew
it's all black.......?
+qnnonymus OP is a squid
+Pixl Rainbow
You may fly away, captain!
That's pretty naughty.
This basically sets up Skyward sword HD or other good titles with pointing and motion controls like Galaxy 1+2, etc. This makes me super hyped for the new switch launches
I feel like your screen is caked in spit
That's actually pretty good! Too bad Europe and Australia didn't get World of Goo or Little Inferno on the Switch this week. But hopefully we will get them both next week as Little Inferno is already scheduled for a European release on the 23rd of this month according to the eShop menu.
*cough
backwards compatibility
*cough
What a great video! I am watching this in anticipation of super Mario 3d all stars to try and see how the pointer controls for Galaxy would work. Seems like they will work very well since this isn't the first time the switch has done controls like this! I'm super excited to play Galaxy again on the switch!!!
animal crossing city folk hd anyone?
no
City Folk kind of sucked lol.
I'd rather have a new game in the series that adds onto New Leaf.
Xyphire The Wind yeah a new one would be awesome. the switch is a perfect console for animal crossing!
say android what dose the background look's like on 3:24
It's like in Skyward Sword, where it doesn't utilize the same sensor-tech as the Wii remote, but rather uses the gyroscope inside to calculate the aiming on the screen from how you're rotating the controller.
Yooo there is even Emil
Macko!
wtf, who puts the censor on TOP of the tv
Jerry Koopa I've never seen anyone put it on the bottom of the TV....
Putting it on top usually means it's closer to the screen, making it feel more accurate
Jerry Koopa I did lol
I guess it depends on where the tv is located
Ukulele Pichu 64 I put it on the bottom so it doesn't, you know...fall. It also allows me to sit down in front of the T.V. while playing with motion controls.
I really love pointing the Wii remotes on the screen in games like zelda Twilight Princess and Trauma Center but I am not a fan of games that uses wiimotion+
because it doesn't really care about the sensor bar.
The pointing is mostly taken care of with the technology inside the controller rather than the sensor bar resulting in a far less precise and accurate experience. In games like Zelda skyward sword you have to constantly re-calibrate the wii remote with the down button to re-center the aiming reticle when you get out your bow.
Seems like the switch is basically doing the same thing so I don't have my hopes up.
first!
never been first before, big moment for me!
Blue shell
Rafael Mendoza Wow you actually are first
\o/
Your life must be pretty boring if being the first comment on a video posted online is a "big moment" for you
Wow, your life must suck.
The first gamexplain world of goo video
That's not actually what Gyroscopes do. Gyroscopes can detect changes in rotation but they can't detect changes in position. That's what accelerometers do. Accelerometers can detect acceleration and combining the two can give you information about the exact Position and Rotation of a device relative to a point. That's what callibration does.
But the Joy-Cons have accelerometers too! But you may already know it...
**kicks door**
DID SOMEONE SAY WORLD OF GOO!?
I really liked world if goo for wii. Thanks for the eye opening video.
That's really smart how they done the cursor, the switch is a beast of features
Skywards Sword HD... I'm calling it right now... We've already got Windwaker HD and Twighlight Princess HD... Plus, the confirmation of the Switch having slightly better motion controls pretty much gives it away....
This is great news as pointer controls are awesome with Pikmin. Quick plug: Pikmin 3 has one of the best local multiplayer modes of all time!
Pointer controls are one of the largest underrated features of the Wii remote. I hope they don't let this functionality go to waste.
(and according to rumours it's closer to being a mini- kinect than the kind of sensor the Wii had) - It makes you wonder what that's capable of, but to use it like the sensor on a wii remote would require holding it upside down
Which works pretty well I find, if you hold it in the opposite hand from normal... (though it becomes impossible to use the trigger buttons.)
Lots of weird little things huh...
Ha, thanks for the vid! This is exactly what I was looking for!
why are you teaching me things during spring break?
I was really curious about this cosni always loved it on the wii. Thx
We finally get to use this outside of indie games and clubhouse games 51.
At 2:50 the reflection on the top of the TV makes you look like Mark Zuckerberg aka Lizard King
3:05 what was that?
Deep down still dreaming for Conduit 3 :(
I can see Nintendo implementing this for Virtual Console releases of Original Wii games (Digital Foundry proved that with a little optimization, the Switch can handle emulating most Wii and GameCube titles at 1x native resolution at the very least).
“Go back in time to the Wii”
*Wii U menu return clearly visible*
I hope they will use this for the future web browser and media apps
If the pro controller has the same sort of pointing functionality, I'm going to have a field day whenever a Pikmin game comes out for the Switch. Superior Wii pointer controls on top of the familiar gamecube controls? Yes please.
A Kalman Filter might be able to prevent that drift by checking against the accelerometer data. That's just a guess though.
I can’t wait to save enough to get a switch. I can’t believe they put world of goo on there. I love that game but I never got to play it (aside from the demo).
I love using the motion controls for magnesis in botw.
IMU modules are pretty temperature sensitive. I wonder if some of that drift is due to heat transfer from your hand. That would cause it to drift more as it was heating up, but then stabilize after peaking.
I knew giroscopes could been used to point to the screen, so we don't need the sensor bar
Glad to see that they're using it
The Wii U gamepad had gyros but it also had a magneto meter which they used to automatically calibrate the gyro. I wish they did the same thing with the Joycons, but I get the feeling they ran out of room to fit it in
2:15 why do you have parental controls on...
I would love to have this pointer functionality for typing on the system's virtual keyboard.
I never thought about a motion control pointers for the switch. I kinda wish u could use it on the menu lol
Holy shit. Why am I just seeing this now? This is revolutionary. A Super Mario Galaxy port is imminent.
great makes the wait for pikmin 4 even more exciting.
Wow, the gyros get uncalibrated from the screen really easily. Galaxy on Switch is going to be really annoying to collect star bits: on Wii, you could quickly twitch the wiimote to collect the star bits, whereas that is exactly the action that causes drift in the gyro calibration. :(
I had never thought about the auto-calibration that the MotionPlus gyros use the IR camera for, that really makes the Switch gyro implementation far inferior.
Everyone remember placing the Wii remote on the table and keeping it still for 10 seconds
saying "it works pretty well" while constantly having to recalibrate it
gyro controls are step back from camera based controls and I'm really surprised that they didn't just give the camera a wider field of view or improve the technology in some other way
wow that´s cool!
It's like the pointer in wii motion plus support games. I'd love to see this feature in shooter games.
DID YOU KNOW : The Nintendo Wiishop is still functional and all software is still available for download, meaning the Wiishop is 11 years old
