Lyrics:
If pain was a color to paint on you
Your heart would be the color blue
Be a painting, hung up there 'til your body met your head
Which were made of silver
You are the one they call Jesus Christ
Who didn't know no rock and roll
Just a mission made of guns that they give boys in Vietnam
But they always told him
There's a madness in us all
There's a madness in us all
So
Who broke the rules?
Who broke the rules?
Who broke the rules?
They said
Every one of you will never try to lend a hand
When the policemen don't understand
Oh, you boys, all you boys
Think you're so American
Girls, all you girls
They're so American
He may not be born of this land
But he was born of this world
He was born of all the mothers
And the colors of our brothers
And the love that we sent him
You are the one they call Jesus Christ
You may not know no rock and roll
There may not be a heaven or a place in which to send you
But you know in the end
There's a madness in us all
There's a madness in us all
There's a madness in us all
There's a madness in us all
So
Who broke the rules?
Who broke the rules?
Who broke the rules?
They say
Every one of you will never try to lend a hand
When the policemen don't understand
Boys, all you boys
Think you're so American
Girls, all you girls
Yeah, you're so American
There's two eyes for every one of us
But somebody got there first and took them all
There's two eyes for every one of us
But somebody got there first and took them all
Man, oh, man
Think you're so American
Man, oh, man
Yeah, you're so American
Man, oh, man
You think you're so American
Man, oh, man
Yeah, you're so American
There's two eyes for every one of us
But somebody got there first and took them all
There's two eyes for every one of us
But somebody got there first and took them all

Portugal. The Man took 2017 by the horns after a considerably long gap, between records. They spent years working on an album called Gloomin + Doomin before later developing what would become known as their latest studio album WOODSTOCK. Fate struck lead singer, John Gourley, twice. First, John got some parental tough love from his old man. “What’s taking so long to finish the album?,” John’s dad asked. “Isn’t that what bands do? Write songs and then put them out?” The whole thing got John thinking about why the band seemed to be stuck on a musical elliptical machine from hell and more importantly, about how to get off of it. Second, John found his dad’s ticket stub from the original 1969 Woodstock music festival, which ultimately knocked something loose in his head. He realized that, in the same tradition of bands from that era, Portugal. The Man needed to speak out about the world crumbling around them.
With these two ideas converging, the band made a seemingly bat-shit-crazy decision: they took all of the work they had done for the three years prior and threw it out. The band went back to the studio - working with John Hill, Danger Mouse and longtime collaborator Casey Bates. In this new-found creative territory, the album that became WOODSTOCK rolled out naturally from there. Fast forward to present day and it was impossible to escape the album’s first single “Feel It Still,” which dominated the charts and radio airwaves in 2017. The 6X Platinum Certified hit reigned at #1 at nearly all radio formats, including Top 40, as well as Alternative, where the song held the chart’s top spot for a mind-blowing 20 weeks, breaking the record for most weeks at #1. Yes, you read that right. 5 guys from Wasilla, Alaska who have played nearly 1,500 shows in their career broke Alternative radio records and had a #1 song at Pop radio. Billboard Magazine even went as far as to call the song, “the unexpected rock crossover hit of 2017,” while Rolling Stone listed it as “one of the best songs of 2017.” AND THEN…the band kicked off 2018 by winning a GRAMMY Award for “Feel It Still.” WOODSTOCK has since been certified gold, as has their second single “Live In The Moment”.

This song is so great. 10 Years later I'm still listening to this gem. It's Making me cry tho. Takes me back to the best Era of my life with my family, friends, love of my life. Now most of them are passed on, my dad suffered traumatic brain Injury was never the same, my mom haven't seen in 6 years almost nor my siblings, my x is long gone. I'm the only one still here. But I'm not alone because this song is still here , allowing me to experience some of those same feelings I felt back then.
Animo amigo
It's never too late to try to reconnect with your family. As for the love of your life, it sucks, but time to find a new one. There are too many people out there for there to only be one for us. It's more a matter of who is willing to put in the effort to add to your fulfillment. You look young enough and reasonably good looking. You sound reasonably soulful. Go forth. There is a win to be had in every day, yo.
I feel ya almost identically on all that bud (situationally at least), but songs like these remind us that you can’t kill cherished memories, they will live forever if you so choose so hold them close and be open to what comes next: there’s lots of living left to live and no matter the outcome you’ll have been there to live it~ I bet you look back and laugh at the dark times one day, don’t give up buddy.
Be thankful to have had so much to have lost in the first place, many aren’t so lucky… Try to alter your perception and come at it again, maybe your true happiness is just that one next test away 🤷♂️
same
This song has never been more on point.
Or more pretentious, Waiter You Vultures/Church Mouth is all that's needed. I'm thankful for seeing them a few times before whatever this is.
@@milesschmidt3285, what do you want to tell us..?!
@@deineomma90 This shit's lame, compared to their first two albums/It's Complicated Being A Wizard. Pretty sure that was summarized in my first comment. Just my opinion.
@@deineomma90 My original reply got deleted due to RUclips rules. Even tho it was a joke. Censorship is lame too, when the intent is to make people laugh. Shit happens I guess. Good night/morning.
@@milesschmidt3285, sorry bout that.
Sigh...Portugal. The Man...one of the best rock bands of the 21st century, imho!
Tony Meeker I agree
Tony Meeker nonsense! I'd be glad to not hear the 'mass shit' all the time.
Tony Meeker my bad bub, read that wrong. You upset? Need your ninny?
***** yeah, I read it wrong. I agree. No need for him to get all pissy.
A Mill He was telling you politely, actually.
this is on my list for the best songs i´ve ever heard in my life.
Could you tell some of the other ones, please?
do you realize? by the flaming lips, kumbala by la maldita vecindad, mediodia by cafe tacuba, stairway to heaven by led zepellin, berceuse by chopin, ....are some
Thanks dude!
Thanks for the song recommendations below. I loved Kumbala & downloaded it. And all music by Chopin takes me back to my childhood, because my mother would play Chopin on the piano every night while dinner was cooking. :^)
You have good taste, sir
I find the sound of their music to be kind of haunting. I like it.
Nikki King really me too, a little evil😈
@@ericangelortunoquinn8078 yeah, they almost seem like * looks directly at camera * evil friends
This is a very underrated band
Not anymore!
lmao, and now they sell out and look what happens. Their music goes to pure shit.
I seen them in concert 2 yrs ago and i agree with you Zach
@@jstn05 honestly, I love their old stuff and their new stuff

Enlightened. One of the best show ever. Perfect song choice for the end of the finale. Please HBO, renew it.
I can't get over how good they are, and my friends are wondering why I listen to one band all of the time... Portugal. The Man isn't a band, it's a lifestyle.
I was locked up for 16 months, first thing I did after getting back was listen to PTM
Honestly, it's so easy to go into a binge with them for days, or weeks.
@@ChristopherRhudyHell yeah brother. Hope you're doing well now
True. What genre of music I listening to? Portugal. The Man! :D
Here 9 years after this came out, its more on point than you could possibly immagine rn
Rock on
There's a madness in us all.... this doesn't get old... hope we grow up to get rich and famous
We went to the City Museum in St Louis tonite. And as we were riding this rickety old ferris wheel on top of the roof, we heard this band jamming on a kids radio from the darkness below. What an awesome band to soar to on a city lit nite.
What a beautiful song.
Jesus christ, PTM is truly underrated. All the lyrics I've checked out so far are so beautiful, so meaningful. His music is captivating, beautiful as well. Yet, bad musicians that write anything that rhymes and has a connection to party/drugs/booties becomes über famous, influencing millions of youngsters.
The world must know PTM.
MarceloACR haha how ab now
Hear Hear !
I've been a long time Portugal the Man fan, from back when they used to sound more like the Mars Volta and now through their more folk-rock sound. I think they're great! I've seen them in concert 3 times, and I thought the show was better when they were rocking out more. Their show is much more laid back now, much like their music. Go see them if you can, they're touring still!
I remember buying this vinyl 10 years ago at Rasputin in Berkeley. I was record shopping and came across this Gem, never heard of them but being a 14 year old kid exploring music i found this album and fell in love with it! One of my favorite songs to drop the needle too. Had some friends of mine ask me if I would sell this record I wouldn’t sell it for anything
Good for you, boy. You have a vanyl for God's sake. Enjoy it!!!❤️
Been listening to them since 2007, and the sound has changed, especially from the first album, but has always been undoubtedly good. That said, you stumbled upon what might be their best album, in my opinion, in that record store. Also, bay area represent! I found so much good stuff in record stores there in the 2000's and early 2010's. That'll always be my home, even if there are things i couldn't live with there. Like the cost of living. Lol.
Have you listened to belle and Sebastian?
One of those songs that no matter who you are or what your life experiences are, this will evoke some memory in you of the past.. good, bad, happy, sad, that's to be determined but if you have a soul, you can't listen to this and not feel something.
What a comment man love everything you said....
I'll say it again. This is one of the best 15 bands from Alaska that I've ever heard.
Portland/Alaska lol
@@Invertedworldx my bad
Just discovered this. Whoa. How'd I miss it all these years?
Indeed
Wow lol that's crazy man such a song that just stays on repeat lol for real lol
This band is on the vanguard of Rock & Roll in this new century.
And when you least expect it, and they're mentioned to be in the Rock N Roll Hall Of Fame years from now, their music will blow up beyond a atomic bomb.
Sure. Because Royal Blood, Arctic Monkeys, Nothing But Thieves and many others totally just don't exist. Jack White, who? Doesn't exist. Cage The Elephant whomst? What is Kaleo? Greta Van Fleet...que? Highly Suspect? They must have only been a dream.
Here because of that excellent movie The Report on prime.
Love the song So American
This song is amazing. Way ahead of its time. What we see in the country now is what they were talking about more than 10 years ago. I pray that this country can reconcile man. Stop setting barriers and let’s start setting bridges
Such a gem
I stumbled across this band today on youtube.. the minute i heard that "Modern Jesus" song,i was a instant fan of theem....GREAT MUSIC!
moi aussi
The best part is that you can pick literally anyone of their albums (which they have 10 or 11) and you can listen to it all the way through and it kills, all lot of artists it seem struggle to put out an album with a couple good songs....no disappointments whatsoever when it comes to Portugal. The Man my friend
I found this band accidentally, too, and have always been so glad that it happened, lol, they're really very good, talented a.f., for sure 👍♥️
This song feels and sounds so cold, idk why its out on a hot sunny beach!?!?
This song reminds me of someone .... And also makes me wanna cry without reasons
Reflecting on this song and how much I had it on repeat and open mic this song for how much I love it lol years ago
The style of the intro reminds me of Space Oddity. "Ground control to major Tom..."
Griffin Nagel R I P David Bowie
I'm actually new to PTM and what I found most interesting about the song is that it sounds so British! I'm definitrly not a huge fan of American music, I generally prefer European bands/singers, but still PTM sounds great to me...I suppose that's the reason
This song just feels like 'summer' can't wait to blast it while cruising around.
I am 63 old. When my son open this band for me, I 've got, that I am young.
0:23 is my favorite part when the rest of the band chimes in. You can feel the deep bass that starts the song.
One of the best songs of all time by one of the greatest bands of all time. Absolutely gorgeous.
One of my all time favorite songs!! Love this band.

Go Portugal! You are presently, the BEST!
Almost died one year, 2014. Couldnt get over what i did and my intention.. while I laid in bed recovering from my injuries, i always listened to this band to fit my sorrow.. since then I realized how much more there is to life than the tiny bs or hiccups you run through especially at a young age.. Im now a Supervisor at a UPS facility at ohare. Man does life change over the years. Btw its 2018
Any updates? Do you own UPS now?

Is this heaven?
Probably idk
I keep coming back to this album again and again. feels like a sountrack to my life. such a great album, thank you for making your incredible music. love you guys!
I hate to admit it, but I just became a Portugal the Man fan yesterday, when I heard this Song on WNKU. So I don't know anything about them, except the 3 songs of heard of theirs are pretty f#©king amazing! So if any more seasoned fans would be so kind as to recommend some of their favorite Portugal the Man Tracks, I'd be greatful, for time is the rarest of commodities, at this time in my life. Thank you!
They've put out a good deal of music. I'm more into rocknroll Portugal. the Man, and I think that Church Mouth, Censored Colors, and the Satanic Satanist are some of the greatest albums ever released. Their newer stuff is more electronic and more accessible. Here are some songs you should check out.

I did not missed your point at all. It's a valid point in a school setting but not in RUclips.
Remember that he is a kid trying to learn a new language and a lot of people understood his message. So what if he made a couple of mistakes, either ask for clarification or ignore it, but never denigrate someone for trying.
Anyway, at least we all seem to have something in common and that is - we like this group!
