Love your channel, Mark. I shoot a lot with kids who aren't familiar with cameras and an interview setup, and who struggle to give more than the basic answers to questions. I've found that it's super helpful to invite them behind the scenes, keep things light, show them how the camera works and have them hit the record button and interview me first, giving them a sense of control in a strange environment. Then when they're in front of the camera they often feel much more comfortable and ready to give thoughtful responses. Also, silly questions go a long way to helping them relax.

I just released a doc about a train wreck in my hometown 30 years ago. I talked to 5 first responders about what they saw and felt that night. 11 People died, 50 were severely injured. You have to connect to the subjects to create a room where they feel save to talk about these traumatizing images - even 30 years after in happened. It is in german, but you find it on my Chanel if you want to.

Before I started film school and had an assignment that was to make a mini documentary, and looked on RUclips to learn some more techniques for a different perspective, I found this channel and I find my self wanting to do more documentaries after watching a majority of your video's.
Don't get me wrong I'm still going to make movies but now I'll add more documentaries to my list.
Thank you Mark for all the advice, maybe I can make enough to be able to add AOD to my studies in near future

Took the small space idea for a piece I just did , a great tip when you don’t want people who are new to being on camera to feel nervous ! Thanks Mark! Working alone and managing both cameras, sound, lighting and the interview itself always is so much pressure. That's why I tend to go with a voice over style as much as possible. That way, I can really have a nice conversation and the person feels less intimidated by the gear (single mic instead of...well everything). And since I do short corporate videos, the voice over method works pretty well!

Just ran several corporate testimonial interviews last week, I've run probably 100+ over the years and always felt like I've improved over time but am always looking to learn more since it's so important to the overall production to have honest & candid interviews. Was just thinking how I never see this taught so thanks for this!

Only 1% will ever be able to do this. It is learnable, have no illusions. But it requires too many social blunders. That for most to face them, would require questioning a lifetime of deeply ingrained rationalisations about one's personality being introverted. It is a rare soul....the introvert, who forces consciously by way of classical conditioning, the habits of the extrovert.
    A very rare soul indeed.
