Interesting treatise on the class and cultural divides at the time. Having lived in Spain and having a relative named Olalla , pronounced O-lie-yuh, hearing O-La-La sounded ridiculous for an otherwise excellent reading. There are reference books such as Spanish English Dictionaries that provide correct pronunciation to stay true to the narration. A little research goes a long way.

Spoiller alert: don t read my comment if you want to listen to the story fresh: Ok so can we talk about this book? First off loved the storytelling, the wordplay, the imagery, RLS was a master a ninja wordsmythe. So was the residencia indeed evil and Olalla a vampire her self as her mother ? Whats your take on the story. I think not, but she knew she was meant to serve her mother and and brother in sort of a self sacrificing life of misery and took solace in her religion. The family were misunderstood. OK not sure about the muleteers friend miguel and what happened there. Whats your insight?

The "ll" in "Olalla" should be pronounced like a "y".

ChatGPT: The name "Olalla" is typically pronounced as "oh-LAH-yah" or "oh-LAH-lah," depending on regional accents and personal preferences. The emphasis is usually on the second syllable.

      ChatGPT
For Robert Louis Stevenson's book, the correct pronunciation of "Olalla" is "oh-LAH-lah." This pronunciation aligns with the common way the name would be said in English, taking into account the likely Spanish origin of the name.

      1. Chat-GPT is notorious for coming up with inaccurate information, especially on obscure topics.
      2. Why would the pronunciation be "Oh-lah-lah" keeping the Spanish influence in mind? It seems to me that would be ignoring the Spanish origin and adopting a purely English standard.
      3. Here is an actual Gothic literature expert on the topic: "One of Stevenson’s most shamefully underrated short stories, “Olalla” (pronounced oh-LIE-yuh), is a masterpiece of erotic horror, one of the most teasingly ambiguous vampire stories in English, and a prefiguration of Jung’s analytical theories of the Self."
