      Thanks for that Julie, yes it's very different beauty. It can be a nightmare as well. You just have to stay well within your capabilities to stop it turning into a nightmare. I always have something in reserve as a backup.

    My gortex DPM is great but when wet through eventually I fill dank muggy for a while when the sun is out . My old SAS smock with proofing gets sodden eventually but drys out soo quick. Had mine 1996 the one without the button on chest???? Rank 😮 . Still have her but belly is in way when shooting in the muck 😊

    Another great video Andy, really enjoying them. Was curious if the jackets you've used fabsil on have become noticeably less breathable or not? I'm about to try doing a CS95 smock but not sure whether to do shoulders, elbows and hood, or just do the entire thing. I'd ideally like to use it while hiking with a backpack among other things so retaining some breathability would be nice.

    • @Andy-walkaboutnutty
      @Andy-walkaboutnutty  4 месяца назад +2

      @npwn6569 No, it's not noticeabley less breathable. Probably because it's baggy and adjustable with the front zip being undone and the sleeves slightly opened. The one thing about fabsil is that when it's dried and aired, the material feels like you haven't done anything to it. Wax is different. It feels like it's received a very light coating of something. Not like the barbour, which is painted on quite thick. I'm sure you're not going to hike in hot sunshine with a jacket on. No jacket is that breathable, but you will be fine. I only use plain fabsil these days, not gold. It's not so smelly, and it does a fine job.

      @@Andy-walkaboutnutty I ended up using fabsil gold on my smock. The smell is annoying but I managed to get rid of it in about 12 hours by hanging it up and having a fan blow on it constantly. Heavy rain forecast for tonight so looking forward to giving it a proper test

    • @Andy-walkaboutnutty
      @Andy-walkaboutnutty  4 месяца назад +2

      @npwn6569 12 hours, that's fast. It took me about 5 days in the garage. I have since learned that it would be quicker on the line, but I don't want it to rain while I'm out. You can spray it on your rucksack and basha if you fancied doing that. Just remember, it's not perfect, so if you're going into a high remote area, put a light waterproof underneath or wool if it's cold where you are.

      @@Andy-walkaboutnutty Turns out using a fan isn't a good idea. I tried the smock out in high wind and heavy rain and unfortunately it leaked badly. I tried again, this time letting the fabsil hang dry for 4 days rather than using a fan. That seemed to do the trick as I stood in the shower under full power for 30 minutes and not a drop got through. I also tried out the breathability this evening and it performed great. For 30 quid (£20 smock + £10 fabsil) I now have a jacket that I feel is on par with an expensive goretex model, but far tougher and with decent storage. Thanks for giving me the inspiration Andy!

    Having walked and sat on blorenge I can appreciate the exposure test. I ride motorcycles and am about to use fabsil on an army jacket. Really appreciate your review. Would you still use it?

    • @Andy-walkaboutnutty
      @Andy-walkaboutnutty  23 дня назад +1

      @ladyjrider666 Yes, it's still my first choice. I have to say that fabsil has different abilities with different fabrics. It might have something to do with the tight knit of the cloth? I don't know. But I think the rain would eventually get through. Nothing is waterproof if it is breathable, so I don't want to lead you into a false sense of surcurity. It's best to have a backup underneath like a short length waterproof jacket of some sort.
      If you haven't used fabsil before, I'd just like to say that the jacket will need airing in a garage or shed outside while drying. The smell will go.

      @Andy-walkaboutnutty thanks. I appreciate the insight. I have plastic style over trousers so might pick up a rain jacket too.

    That looks like it performs way better than the stock DWR on my b110. It’s truly terrible, if I walk even for 15 minutes in a slight drizzle, the fabric already starts absorbing water, really disappointing. Would I need to wash it before applying the Fabsil? And did you use the version that comes in a spray can?
    I hope doing this will make me like the jacket because as it is now, I don’t, which is a shame because I really like the design and look of it. EDIT: I should have read the comments first🤦🏻‍♂️

    • @Andy-walkaboutnutty
      @Andy-walkaboutnutty  5 дней назад +1

      @elmanitasdeplomo there's no fake stuff on my channel. If it's crap, OK, or a good bit of kit, I'll say so. The fabsil was applied when new, so anything after washing I don't know about. I apply fabsil to all my stuff except trousers and boots. I buy fabsil by the 5 litre drum. That will do a jacket 10 times or 10 jackets. I only apply 1 layer/spray, then would do it again after washing. Application is by a spray bottle with a trigger, like the ones you'd use with cleaning fluids. So it gets soaked. This was a test for me to find out the outcome as well. I have a video on this called,, how to waterproof a ventile jacket with fabsil. In the video, I use fabsil gold, but plain fabsil is good enough and less smelly when applied. So you need to dry it and air it in the garage, shed, or on the line on a dry day. It does a good job, but that was just a couple of hours or so. I wouldn't want to lead you into a false sense of surcurity and rely on it all day in a dangerous place, so you still need a light waterproof underneath. I hope this helps. After all, it's an expensive jacket and quite good really.

      @ I have no intention of spending several hours in the rain, plus I live in the west of the Netherlands, never really far away from from anything. Thanks for the reply and I think I’ll order a can of Fabsil and check out your other video. All the best.

    Which fabsil did you use: spray-on or paint-on? Fabsil Gold or just the ordinary stuff?
    Thanks for showing the result, looking good!

    • @Andy-walkaboutnutty
      @Andy-walkaboutnutty  9 месяцев назад +2

      I sprayed it on, and just ordinary fabsil. It's not as smelly as fabsil gold and does a good job I think. I wouldn't use fabsil gold again. It takes too long to air out to get rid of the smell.

    Andy:
    How about lozenge. This is defined as a rhombus or diamond shape and commonly found in sore throat medication tablets or in heraldry -- a charge in the shape of a solid diamond, in particular one on which the arms of an unmarried or widowed woman are are displayed. All women who are armigerous (i.e. entitled to a coat of arms) display their arms on a lozenge, except for a Queen Regnant, such as Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. All men who armigerous display their arms on a shield.

    Andy, do you like this Arktis version better than the British Army Windproof Smock with the wire in the hood? Any pros or cons to either?

    • @Andy-walkaboutnutty
      @Andy-walkaboutnutty  Год назад +3

      The arktis is a little bit better because of the cons of the British army MTP smock, the cons are,, the chest map pockets have a mesh backing, the hood is way too big with no adjustment, the velcro gets stuck on the inner mesh when you go to put it on, the waist draw cords are adjustable on the inside and it would take longer to dry. Just little irritating stuff. However, the hood is double layered, and the price is a lot cheaper. They are both good smocks generally, but the arktis B110 is just a bit better. There are no cons with the arktis, I dare say that over prolonged use, the arktis would be better, but it is a lot more expensive. Hope this helps 👍
