    3:45 The halting of the Spanish Armada was said to have inspired Shakespeare's The Tempest with Queen Elizabeth's Court Astrologer/Advisor, Dr. John Dee, serving as inspiration for Prospero.
    I don't think you've done a Biographics on Dr. Dee as of yet, no? Imho, it would be a wildly entertaining episode. From being convicted of treason for the foretelling of Queen Mary's death and Princess Elizabeth's succession, or what may possibly be the first use of stunt wires to fly above an audience, to his later work with divining the Angelic language, Enochian.
    I may be the only one who thinks so, but his partner for this latter story, Edward Kelley, could have also served as inspiration for Rumpelstiltskin, a few centuries later.

    • @jaydwy8069
      @jaydwy8069 3 года назад +2

      I don't understand the connection to rumple stiltskin can you explain?

    • @MercenaryTau
      @MercenaryTau 3 года назад +8

      @@jaydwy8069 Sure thing. It's a bit of a stretch and I did find a number of discrepancies between the two stories, but all this was about 200 years before the publishing of Grimm's Fairy Tales so it's fun to think about how the retelling would have mutated during that time.
      Nearing the end of their service to England, Kelley acquired the knowledge to transmute metal into Gold and he and Dee had an audience with the nobility of Prague and Poland in late 1583. They were unsuccessful in impressing either and were left to travel bohemian around Central Europe. Dee wanted to continue his work with the Enochian language whereas Kelley wanted to spread word about his ability to turn metal to Gold. During a séance, Kelley was able to convince Dee that the two of them should share everything, including their wives. Dee's wife gave birth to a son the next year, with rumours of Kelley being the father. (it's unlikely that this knowledge was common to the point where it would have been part of the story, but I think it's a neat detail, with Rumplestiltskin demanding a child as payment though Kelley was largely apathetic) Kelley and Dee would split ways in 1589 with Kelley entering the service of Emperor Rudulf II of Prague by means of that same alchemical promise.
      I guess this is where he also becomes the Daughter from the Rumplestiltskin story because soon after, he was imprisoned for Fraud and locked up until he was able to produce Gold. He was able to reattempt the experiment a number of times over the next decade but would fail at each. He would later attempt escape where he broke his leg and later died from his injuries.

Of course, it’s also summer and I don’t think rubbing down with grease is smart around a bonfire…also, what kind of grease, it was the war, so,certainly not an animal or vegetable product. If Dumbledore was a noble wizard, he would definitely side with the German National Socialists. Some captured British warriors did join the Waffen-SS when they realized Soviet Communism was the real enemy of Europe. Likewise, some British subjects went to Germany before the British Empire declared war on Germany to help the propaganda effort. James Joyce was the most famous example. He was shamefully murdered by the British government as being a "traitor" after the war. How can he be a traitor when he argued for peace and mutual understanding between Britain and Germany?

      Funny you should mention that, because the man who did crack the Enigma code was Alan Turing, a homosexual who was also outcast from society and who received as grand thanks for his effort chemical castration under the law, complete revocation of all of his honors, and the loss of his career. And he was the man leading the team who came up with the math to crack Enigma. A very real-world kind of "witch" with powers beyond those of mere mortals or any other Allies on their side at the time who used numbers and arcane formulae to get inside the minds of the enemies and steal all their plans from afar.
      Turing is also the father of modern computing, and the author of the Turing Test to determine between AI and biological intelligence, which runs a contest every year and even today has yet to be won (no AI passes the Turing Test yet).
      When Turing fell into despondency and despair at the end of his life he supposedly put on the costume of Snow White and killed himself by ingesting an apple soaked in cyanide. Although denied by Wozniack and Jobs, the apocryphal tale spread by early computer fandom was that the original logo of the rainbow apple with a bite taken out of it for Apple Computers was a direct nod to Alan Turing and his method of death. It's become something of the legend of Bagger Vance now -- "when the legend becomes accepted as the truth, print the legend".
      Homosexuals were treated so horriibly by society at large that when everyone else was rescued from the Concentration camps, the gays there were locked up in prison immediately and never freed (the pink triangle was Hitler's symbol for the gays in the camps to single them out for extra harsh treatment from the guards, and the gays are the only group to have successfully reclaimed one of the Nazi symbols of oppression and turned it into the flag of global Pride... magic, no?)
      So yeah, the witches made up some PR because they were too old and wanted to be cut some slack to worship as they felt called by conscience instead of read the riot act for being weird. Gardner's faith has done very well for itself and even poor old Alan Turing finally got a formal post-mortem pardon and restoration of full honors by the Crown not too long ago.
      Just because the actions, beliefs, and personal lives of others doesn't map to a narrow social or religious role of patriotism doesn't mean that mainstream society is free of debt to the marginalized.
      Whether you believe in witchcraft or not, whether the ritual actually took place or not, GBG and his fellows did do one thing, and that's wage a war of disinformation and grassroots participation in the war effort. Not too bad for a group of seniors at the time who couldn't lift a haversack.

The video missed another famous one: Dion Fortune, who wrote a book called "The Magical Battle of Britain" where she and initially witches, but later, *anyone* who wanted to worked to defend Britain with magic and intent - beginning in 1939. As books go, it's dry, being based from letters....but it still looks like Dion had them both beat by a year.
