  • @GeoffGillDrums

interesting to note that the album version is 96 BPM. this live version is 100-102+. maintaining relaxed 16ths like Jeff Porcaro does w/ the right hand was tough enough at 96...this is no friggin joke here ! what a groove monster.

+Geoff Gill Sometimes I wonder just how fast he could play with his right hand.

    • @GeoffGillDrums

+Scott Hiddleston my guess is north of 110 bpm. Jeff was a RH hi hat phenomenon. I am imaging he worked this from a young age w/ his musicals Dad/ family's help. Check his VHS video on RUclips where he describes coming up w/ a drum parts for some tune I think at 108. Then the last tune is 102. Great.

So true. I'm 40 years old now, still drumming as a hobby. This song, godamn, this song : first time I heard it, I thought it was two handed, appears to be simple, then I saw videos..... that speed and feel : so hard to play with the same kind of groove....

Incredible drummer, one of the coolest things about him was that he provided a canvas for the rest of the band to paint on while still beautifully putting his mark on the song. The result was a Masterpiece.

I'd disagree. Look at Bernard Purdie on Home At Last, Steely Dan. He said, flat-out on the Roseanna instruction video, he stole it from that one and John Bonham, Fool in the Rain.
I think it's almost more impressive that Bonham did it. He was a massive powerhouse, not much for finesse, and definitely not that often sober. Also, JB's timing is all his own. God help you if you tried to play Zep with a metronome. Lol.
That means, too, that JPJ was one HELL of a bassist.

Merry Prankster I recently heard an old AT40 from 1982. Jeff was on FOUR tunes, including this song, I.G.Y, The Girl Is Mine and Dirty Laundry. And the week after, he was on 5 when Africa debuted. He was incredibly prolific, especially in what's called "yacht rock" nowadays.

    • @Duncan464
      @Duncan464 9 лет назад +1

Merry Prankster I've never been called a 'brother' except by my brother! What a nice thing to say. I'm a funk( I'd like to think jazzy) guitarist but have always loved drums and bass. I see you like Victor who for me is the greatest since Jaco.I also see you like the Crusaders who are one of my all time favourite bands. I only ever saw them in 1996 at a small club in Newcastle upon Tyne (UK) and had the pleasure of meeting Wilton and Wayne at the after gig sign the new record(casette)/meet.

Most drummers are right handed so they s

@smilzomagro hell yeah ! JP was the master of these quarter=100 sixteenth note grooves. not too many guys do this, they switch over to alternating RLRL...not like JPs insane RRRR technique w/ the push/pull thing w/ the wrist pivot. he must have practiced this all the time or just "evolved". this is like maintaining eighths at 200 for like 5 minutes. and it's so loose & solid he can lay the bass drum perfectly in the groove. genius.

I think you're bouncing at least 2 out of 3 hits here, tho i know exactly what you mean.
Bill Cosby, as stupid as he was, had this bit about playing drums and wanting to impress a live band. A PROFESSIONAL jazz band let him sit in.AS A DRUMMER, then knocked him out if the water immediately after playing blues all night. Lol.
"Cherokee." It's insane. VERY fast on the ride. He was talking about how his hand started to cramp and I fell on the floor laughing.

This one has a little faster tempo.
I think it’s Michael on the keyboard. Still pretty good though.

The singer must be Marilyn Martin.

Seriously? Did Jeff play in this? Yes. Could you see him at all? One teensy peek towards the end. A rather misleading title to the clip.

Sally Smith it sure as hell sounds like Porcaro on the album to my ears...

Sally Smith looks like him. He always wore glasses, and tended to look Asian at a glance. Video resolution isn't great here. Hard to be sure.

Definitely Porcaro. From 2.29 to 2.35 there's clear sight of the drums and everything about the drummer's appearance, body language, hell, even the way he plays the hi-hat, says 'Jeff Porcaro'. What a guy - sorely missed...
