The Long Drop - History's Most BRUTAL Execution Method?

  • Throughout the centuries there have been many execution methods used, but one of the most common was the gallows. But in Britain in the 19th century an executioner trialled using a longer drop to send someone to their deaths. William Marwood innovated and he came up with 'the long drop,' and this became the favoured execution method in Britain. Executioners such as Albert Pierrepoint then used this even during the Second World War, but if this execution method went wrong it could be harrowing.

Got to say that the decapitation accident probably was pretty effective anyway. Black Jack might or might not have suffered much, but there was no doubt when it was over. As soon as the head left the body, he was deader than the proverbial door nail. Any other movement would have been just nerves twitching as the cells died individually.

I don''t know if anyone remembers this but in 2006 or there abouts one of Saddam Hussein's henchmen "Chemical Ali" was hanged and his head popped off as well sending the rest of his body crashing to the ground. I remember see Hussein's hanging and the rope and noose where quite thick and wound several more times than what would be done in a hanging in the U.S. Maybe that's why Ali lost his head.

As I recollect, Black Jack's head came off because they used his weight before he'd fattened up on jailhouse food for their calculation.

5:37 Black Jack Ketchum’s executioner made the mistake of using his weight when he was arrested as opposed to the day before his hanging. He managed to balloon up about 300lbs while incarcerated. Additionally he lost an arm in his last train robbery which unbalanced things a bit.
No sympathy here though. While they were building the gallows he could be heard yelling them “Hurry up! I could kill ten men in the time it’s taking you to kill me!”

The book The Executioners Tale, gives the calculation for the long drop method, whereas John C Woods used the short drop method on the Nuremberg Trial Prisoners which caysed more suffering

    • @exilbayer6377
      @exilbayer6377 4 месяца назад +3

No, Woods didn´t use the short drop method.
He used the standard drop method, which is the "one size fits none" version of the long drop.
American hangmen were usually incompetent and/or drunk, so you cannot expect them to do math (or read a drop table).
Trial and error, but without the learning part...

I’m surprised his superiors didn’t recognize his incompetence and do something about it.
On the other hand, after seeing what the Nazis did in their camps, prisons and in newly conquered lands, the victors had little, if any, concern for those condemned to death.

In the UK the executioners, from Marwood onwards, did not have to work out the drop as the Home Office produced a table of drops, slightly modified in the early part of the 20th century. The prisoner was weighed on the evening before the execution and his/her height checked. All the executioner had to do was to consult the table of drops, adjust the rope so that the noose was presented to easily go over the prisoner's head and the length of free rope would give the desired drop.

Unconscious or simply paralyzed? I suspect the latter. The long drop prevents victims from thrashing about, but i see no evidence that it produces unconsciousness.

2:27 Nope. That asphyxiation stuff is okey'ish, but the snapping of the neck does not induce unconsciousness, but incapacitation.
What may results in unconsciousness (may, because it is not reliable), is the pressure spike, that the upwards sliding nose, induces into the big blood vessels in the neck. Also the breaking of the neck, will stop the heart. On this regard the asphyxiation, does sound to slow to me, to have any impact and is reserved to the shorter drops.

This should be shown to people who think we should bring capital punishment back in the UK. Not just because it's brutal and disturbing, but because even the most recent pictures are just obviously so old and document events so far in the past. Hopefully it would make some of them realise how much of a huge step backwards for us it would be.
I don't think they realise they asking for the return of something we abandoned well over half a century ago.
