Great video! I just bought my 98 so I'm looking forward to watching the rest of your videos on this vehicle.

My best friend from high school a couple of years after graduation bought a brand new 1998 4Runner. I went with him to the dealer to pick it out. I told him if he ever wanted to sell it I would buy it. He said he would never sell it and bought several cars after that but always kept the 4Runner. I forgot all about it and being a car guy bought several cars myself. About 20 years later he calls me up and tells me he is getting rid of the 4Runner and sells it to me for $1,000. It had some wear and tear, 300k miles but still in really good shape. No dents, paint still looks good, dashboard no cracks, he took pretty good care of it. I had several cars at the time so I let my mother borrow it. After over heating the engine my mother recently gave me the truck back lol. I didn't know if I was going to sell it or fix it. Well I decided to embark on a journey to restore it. I just rebuilt the engine and it's running like new. I'm actually getting rid of the aftermarket Kenwood stereo and putting back the original. I'm getting the seats redone and getting it back to it's original glory.

Heyyy awesome man, I’ll show your comment section some love. January 2020, I bought a 1998 4runner sr5 with 173k miles for 3k. Mines only RWD as well, but it has the dealer installed sport package, as the original dealer sticker says. It’s bouncy and harsh but all original besides the lower ball joints I HAD to replace for peace of mind.

I once had a project car. 1988 Chevy Z24 Cavalier. I had a few over the years but never got it where I wanted it. Ran out of cash and a place to put it. Especially when I demolished my garage. Anyway, looks like a fun project. Are you really going to put solar panels on top?

Don, I can see how demolishing the garage would shut down the project. I'm absolutely going to put some solar panels on top. I want to to power a cooler, some LED lights, and charging for my camera and phone. I'm also looking at adding an awning to the top.
