Few sounds in the world carry so much weight and hit feelings so deep in most people. A merlin V12 overhead, a flathead Jeep Willys whining down the road and the distinct thump of the Huey. Mixed feelings of hope, struggle, freedom, relief, horror and never again for both sides.
There is some sort of emergency responder crew that trains at a regional airport I pickup passengers at for work that runs one of these bad boys (or a variant of this machine) The pilots were nice enough to show off for us and did a really low pass over the bus and the sound and "feeling" was completely out of this world. This video is insanely good capturing the sound but nothing adds up to the thunderous sound and physical feeling in your body when one of these helicopters is flying less than a hundred feet above your head. Easily my favorite helicopter just for the sound alone!
Love the sound of Huey. I was lucky when I did my military duty in Swedish Airforce they had Huey:s there also and I still almost 50 years later lowe the sound of them. Best helicopter ever.
Brings back memories of me as my job as a Huey crew chief in Vietnam and then in Ft Riley. I got to fly my bird once in Vietnam and pilot let me try to hover. Then in the states, my bird was chosen to fly to an air Show in Nebraska in 1973 to be in an annual air show. We did some aerobatics and gave the civilians a great show of what a Huey can do . I had some great pilots flying my aircraft
Whenever I hear the sound of the propeller cutting against the air. It reminds me of a Vietnam War movie. The sound of the Huey helicopter is really sweet ....!!
Wow!! Thanks A Lot!! Takes me back to 1973-76. I was stationed in Hawaii Assigned to 25th Infantry Div. 3 Sqdn, 4th Air Cav. at Wheeler AFB Hawaii. I was in Avionics and once served as an temporary OH-58D Crew Chief. I actually got to fly front-seat in a Cobra AH-1G occasionally. I have hundreds of flight hours over Oahu. I used to love flying evenings and have seen sunsets while out over the ocean that lite the Entire Sky a Brilliant Bright Flame Orange from one horizon All the way over to the other! LUV IT!!!! Great Times... Great Memories!!! Thanks Again! HEY... I still have my flight helmet and nomex... What do you say you take me for a ride some time?1?!.... Call Me! LOL
The Royai New Zealand Air Force only just retired their Hueys last year (2017) , they started operating them in 1966, they have been replaced with the NH 90 ,a Helicopter that wouldn't last long as the Hueys have.
Thank you for this excellent video I’m using it for In Vivo Exposure during my Prolonged Exposure PTSD therapy homework from the VA, it brings back both good & bad memories. It’s helping me to become desensitized to that sound 50 years later
My favourite aircraft ❤ the Bell UH-1. All the way through primary school, NO teacher could stop me running out of the classroom when the Heuys came to land at Thursday Island State Primary School Oval. There used to be up 5 Hueys at once that came through the Torres Straits back in 70s. I still dream of flying one of these beautiful helicopters ❤
Great video......He seems like a.guy that hasn't flown in a while and getting current again....by the zillion landings and take offs. Obviously a Vet.... Thank you...nice video...
outstanding .if you have never been in a uh-1 huey & experience the ride of your life & feel the rush of the air thought those open doors & think back of those brave men going into battle in nam
BLUF: SUPER VIDEO - thanks! The only thing missing are unit markings and a crew chief. I assume pilot is owner/operator - Vietnam veteran? If so, what unit? What's the cost per hour in 2016 to fly a UH-1? Thanks again for sharing this memory jogger video ...
Someone might know the answer to this question. I asked someone at the time (during Vietnam) and the answer didn't really make sense so I dismissed it. But, why are the overhead windows green? Sure to let more light in without blinding the pilots, but it was super annoying. Wouldn't a grey or smoke tint with UV block been better? Even a type of blue, but why green? Even Google isn't much help in tracking down the original reason.
Man, this one is "double the pain" alright, compared to the "shorty" version...oh, btw: That means I LIKE it!☺ Indeed your description is correct, but maybe with one, tiny alteration: Which would be, "If you DON'T like the LOOK and SOUND of a Huey? Then DON'T watch!!!"☺ God blessed me a few months' back...from the local Goodwill, mind you!...with a set of old KOSS studio quality headphones...and buddy, I'm knockin' the dust out of them every chance I get...!!!
nice vieo. what kind of fuel does it use? how much fuel was spend on the flight (in gallons or liters)? how big is the fuel tank and how far can you travel on one fulll tank?
I don't remember the exact fuel capacity but I think they held about 200 gal and they burned JP-4 Oleg. Operating time I don't know but it was long enough for most missions they were sent on.
First of all Matt they aren't "propellers" These are classified as "Rotary Wing Aircraft" and that is how they fly. Not by dragging or pushing a wing forward to produce lift as a conventional fixed wing, but by spinning it in a circle while adjusting the pitch, angel and speed of the spinning wings. The tail rotor works the same way. There no propellers as you find on modern drones. Oh yeah, the distinctive pop pop or whop whop sound they make is the wing tips breaking the sound barrier!
The BEST background music period.

Thanks.. It was great to work with that Huey
Love that sound of an approaching Huey, especially if it's your ride back to base.
Whenever I hear the sound of the propeller cutting against the air.
It reminds me of a Vietnam War movie.
The sound of the Huey helicopter is really sweet ....!!
There seems to be a very pronounced high pitched whistle with this particular machine that I haven't normally heard in a huey
Almost like a 212 whistle whine

I've been wondering about this too. Maybe we will find an answer someday.
Army air still used the Huey while i was at WSMR
