A friend said recently that I should check Jolie Holland out...and I am so pleased to have now heard this original song and her unique voice. Very cool.
I have listened to this eccentric, multi-talented lady for years- how old is she, how do you even pronounce her name?! Somebody give me the lyrics too! She's superlative so I really don't care if I can't make it all out- I wish I could afford all her out put. There's nobody like her. We lost Billie Holiday before most of us were born! And Nina Simone's playing in a sky café....wish I lived wherever this lady plays- I know being in a small place, right up front would be even more mesmerizing!
Equipped with the #1 girl singer songwriter name (french for pretty) and a voice to match any old time Parisian chansonniere, what could go wrong ? Luckily, there are no accordeon, and the mood is much darker than on most things done down in the french capitals' cabarets, but still
I've visited this video many times, and after two years I feel like you need this phenomenon explained. So, it's probably an omnidirectional microphone, which means it'll pick up a signal from any general direction it's pointing at. The choice of mic might be a deliberate one as there is a whistling solo in this performance. Whistling involves a lot of air movement, and omnidirectional mics are less prone to that. You might notice that Jolie turns her head whilst whistling to avoid the air blown out hitting the mic, therefore ensuring us of a clean and, might I add, an awesome performance. Sorry it took me so long to answer this question. I hope you sleep well from this point on!

You either REALLY get Jolie, or you don't. This is gut-churningly beautiful.

She's amazing. Anyone think she sounds a lot like Jeff Buckley??

How can it make no difference whether she whistles into the micro or aside?
