Stow-on-Side from Pokémon SwSh, but actually it's from PMD Explorers [Soundfont Remix]

  • An arrangement of the music that plays in the town of Stow on Side in the games Pokemon Sword and Shield, in the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers soundfont.
    Ah, Stow-on-Side, the town whose music gives off intense PMD vibes. It's mainly because of the use of the 1-2-5 interval in the melody, which is used in PMD's main theme. It might also be the D section, which reminds me of "Run Away, Fugitives" from PMD1. Or it's the flute throughout the piece... essentially, this is just a PMD piece. They must've placed it in the wrong game and didn't notice!!!
    For this video, I decided on maximising the PMD potential of this piece by using the PMD2 soundfont, and also adding some PMD references into it. I also added in a drumset so that it sounds more like the generic, pumped-up dungeon theme.
    For the graphics, I used a thing called Sonic Candle which generates a waveform visualiser from an mp3/wav. I took a lot of inspiration from MOdern NOise's ( • Battle! Gym Leader - P... ) 8-bit arrangements using a music tracker. Since I'm not very competent with them, I used Musescore instead (as I normally do), and arranged the piece by ear. Then, I converted each instrument's audio and coloured them roughly according to parts, save for a few sections where the melody switches places. The editing was done in Hitfilm Express. It took a few hours, and mostly involved shifting the waveforms around. I liked doing these sorts of things ever since the National Day video I did in August. I'm definitely going to do more!
    The original was composed by Minako Adachi and Go Ichinose.

    It's because of the flute isn't it?
    I immediately got PMD vibes when I first listened to this song. I'm glad others feel the same. Also, nice use of the mallet percussion where that stringed instrument in the melody would be.

      Yeah, now that you mention it, the flute is absolutely very PMD.
      I was thinking of using the guitar sound and doing the tremolo guitar thing the original had, but midi tremolo sounds crappy as hell. That vibraphone sample is also used in a lot of memorable PMD tracks (off the top of my head, the menu theme uses it for its melody).

      you might be thinking of the Super Mystery dungeon Pan flute, because it's exactly the same one used in stow-on-side. it's from EastWest Ra, and it's even used in Sun and Moon for Seafolk Village.

      Same here. I wanted to make something like this for a bit, but I thought nobody had ripped a version that paired to GM instruments. But oh hey, actually someone did that already!
      I dont know if that phrase is theoretically correct lol but yeah it's used in the main PMD theme, time gear, sky tower... a lot of things. I think its more like a sus4 sound in the melody.
      (And yeah, key changes are fun!)

      @@FiveNineSquared Oh gosh, same here! The soundfont pack was very elusive for me. I've had a PMD1 .sf2 for forever but the PMD2 one seemed lost to time until I just, found it.
      I noticed I've ended up using the same sort of rhythm and intervals for a lot of the songs I am composing in Famitracker for my eventual game Shifted. I guess it can be a composer-habit. (I'm really bad at musical terms if you can't tell; I am completely not-musically-trained. I simply feel music and melodies and then compose and work with them. It's all feelings, no brain, typically!)

    • @FiveNineSquared
      @FiveNineSquared  4 года назад +3

      @@CharemTheShadox To be frank, I also rarely use any music theory if I'm composing something, and it's definitely very hard to come up with different things to write for each piece of music you create (for me I almost always use this chromatic-down-sorta chord progression ruclips.net/video/gYIFpSAZ_9E/видео.html ).
      Also you're making a game? Didn't know that. I've tried using Famitracker before but I never got far with it because the interface was a bit tedious to use :p

    • @CharemTheShadox
      @CharemTheShadox 4 года назад

      @@FiveNineSquared (I forgot to respond to this ahhh RUclips's comment layout is so baaaad)
      I'm not sure where my style goes, but I seem to like to build a semi-neutral intro and beginning-section into a very strong payoff melody. And yes indeed, I'm working on something in RPG Maker that's inspired by a game called 'Changed' on Steam. My project is called 'Shifted' and I hope to also sell it on Steam eventually~
      Famitracker's limitations make it kinda comfortable for me, tbh. It CAN be a bit tedious but having a limited set of channels really helps me focus. Here - this is the latest song I've composed for my game: puu.sh/Fq0Kz/c6d6013e35.mp3 ('Locked in Ice')

    This seems to have become on of your most-viewed videos!
    Rightfully so, but I love all the other content you create just as much!
    I'm thankful for having found your channel through this video tho~
    I'm currently trying to get behind the soundfont myself, figuring out of how to make it truly sound "PMD", just started out making music in general so it can be a bit frustrating at times to not get your thoughts translated to the DAW, hehe.
    I dug through this comment section and you suggested certain instruments to make it sound more like PMD, I also figured that certain instruments only sound familiar if you shift them entire octaves.
    I know you're currently busy with other content, but do you think you could someday stream your workflow? I think it would help a tremendous amount to see you arrange something in real time, and regardless of that would be content I'd love to watch!

    • @FiveNineSquared
      @FiveNineSquared  4 года назад

      Thanks! I never tried streaming before (and I don't know if my crappy laptop can handle it haha), but I've thought about doing something like an arranging video before. (But I don't have a very interesting/methodological way of arranging tbh...)
      With regards to the soundfont though, I think the instruments will sound good at the octaves you'd expect. I didn't consider it much as I was writing the arrangement.

      There's a version of the soundfont someone on Reddit compiled where all the patches are labelled according to general MIDI. Using that should be easier for ya: www.reddit.com/r/MysteryDungeon/comments/b6wz35/pok%C3%A9mon_mystery_dungeon_soundfont/ejo1u2m/
      And if you're looking for instrument choices, default to having the flute and/or vibraphone somewhere in the there. Instant PMD.

    let's try listing all pmd references I can find in one listen.
    time gear theme
    gates opening, run away (both are part of the original)
    sky tower
    pokemon square
    "pmd 2 theme" (cause the melody has so many songs - primal dialga, fogbound lake, sacrifice... call it whatever you want)
    ragged mountain
    boss battle
    then there are countless elements that just sound like pmd with no specific song. for example the bass lines, the tremolos/trills, the 0:33 section (kinda in the nightmare, but not the only reason ).

    • @FiveNineSquared
      @FiveNineSquared  4 года назад

      I'm a bit curious where you're hearing the Gates theme... You basically got most of my references though, i might have unintentionally wrote in a bit of Ragged Mountain in there somehow, idk at this point lol all my original compos sound straight off a mystery dungeon game

    • @FiveNineSquared
      @FiveNineSquared  4 года назад

      The 0:33 section was _sorta_ inspired by the nightmare music, like Growing Anxiety - I used the same vibraphone sample

    • @Linkchu
      @Linkchu 4 года назад

      @@FiveNineSquared gates theme is the 4 notes in the melody starting at around 0:42 - it is not that obvious. But at 2:52 you actually used the gates rythm (repeating the first note twice). At 3:06 the run up is very much like ragged mountain.

    • @FiveNineSquared
      @FiveNineSquared  4 года назад

      @@Linkchu ah, the melody in those two parts arent just used in GTI though, for me i associate that with PMD in general since it's been a motif used since Rescue Team.
      And i was guessing that that was the part sounded like Ragged Mountain. It's the 3:2 polyrhythm that's used in the piece.
