I never realized that. Growing up i always thought little joe was, but now after watching reruns on youtube i can see hoss was just immense in this series. RIP HUSS.
I loved it 5:36 when Adam is thrown out the way Hoss is looking at him on the ground and Adam with his hand tells Hoss to get in there not talking with his mouth my hand like he was saying get your butt in there and help our little Brother
The saloon keeper was none other than Leanard Nimoy (Spock on Star Trek). He befriended the ape man (Cal Bolder) and he got on Star Trek at least one episode. Cal was in the marines in Korea and was awarded the Purple Heart, had a football scholarship to college, and later became an LAPD cop. He pulled over a producer and gave him a speeding ticket the producer was enamored with his size, (6 '4" 260 pounds ) and offered him a chance to act, Cal grabbed it and had an excellent acting career, by the way, he was quite intelligent, lol, great acting job in this episode.
I watched this episode for the first time in 2008, after reading the novel in the 11th grade the year previous, and immediately saw the parallels between the novel and this episode. This episode was also trying to teach young men the nature of women like Cheri Bell, of whom the modern equivalent would be OnlyFans girls. A piece of television I would recommend for anyone, and my favorite episode of Bonanza ever.
Hits home this episode. The way Hoss tries to help the big guy. But can't. Makes you think of that time with people who were special. What help they actually received.
In my opinion, this episode is among the best of the Bonanza show. Not about cowboys et al, but about the fragile hearts of people. Cal Bolder was superb in his role. Given that most of Bolder's Hollywood roles were, well, problematic, I bet he appreciated this job. Writer Gene L. Coon wrote a stellar script here. DirectorJames Yarbrough superbly led a sensitive story. Rodolfo Hoyos, Hollywood unsung but always brilliant in his roles, big or small. Dan Blocker is amazing here. Leonard Nimoy: in this work, just Ok. The David Rose music score is haunting with the tragic trumpet. A great episode.
Truly a sad episode and one I can't watch again. He wasn't a truly bad person just misunderstood and mentally handicapped who was too strong for his own good.
That description of yours applies to Lenny in "Of Mice and Men", but not Arnie. The latter was mentally handicapped, true, but that is no excuse for being so quick to jump on people, or for murdering a vagrant and taking his money. His statement that the money "wouldn't do him no good" serves to demonstrate that he very well understood death. Yet he still murdered - at least twice. Adam and Joe were correct about him. Adam warned, "We didn't do anything to make Him that mad, but if you hadn't come along, he may have killed somebody." Lenny, on the other hand, was not quick to fly off the handle and hurt someone. He was truly gentle and never "meant no harm" or "want no trouble".. He killed in a state of confusion - Arnie killed in a state of rage. Arnie, despite his handicap and whatever endearments he may or may not have possessed, was every bit a murderer.
This was an emotional episode. Strong, not bright, lonely, and overly emotional, Arnie had every strike against him. So much so that even Hoss' concern, friendship, and aid wasn't enough to prevent Arnie's demise.
I'm on psych meds and some times I'm misunderstood like that. My baby girl Cherish straightened me up. She's my little savior next to the Lord Jesus. This episode makes me cry now
Marc Durso's comment makes sense, I was just thinking about while acting one must create a scenario of drama, anger, fear, anxiety, irony, revenge, and joy, happiness, excitement, etc. This is obviously training and it would take an extraordinarily intelligent person to accomplish these fine attributes. Creating a scenario people are enticed to absorb, and become enticed by, the superb acting according to the script.
Spock in a saloon! To add Cal Bolder was married to Billie, for almost 50 years, had children and grandchildren. One of the grandchildren? Dain Craver runs an orchard named CraveOrganics.
Once again this episode tried to show respect for everyone no matter what that person might look like be friendly to the lonely another good episode thank you Could you please do another Adam episode he's so gracious in the way he tries to help someone just gets to involved because he has a good heart thank you again i await the next episode with hope ❤
At the mark of 40:39 ,,,,,,,,, Sheriff Coffee asks Ben if he knows where Granite Point is ,, but actually nobody even mentions that Arnie or Hoss is at Granites Point . The Sheriff seem to be able to read minds .....
The sheriff ask Ben are you ready to take us out to this granites point, yet Ben never tells him its granites point were the man is.🤨🤨 Total blooper. haha
I feel so sorry for Arnie and ain't sorry for that killed jerk farmer and the mean saloon girl. Their pathetic lives costed nothing . They were truly were wolves as Hoss said but I can add they behaved like coyotes, mercyless cowards. Bears grizzli can't live with wolves or coyotes...
Toupees are made to look real. If you buy a cheap toupee, it will look fake. Hoss's toupee looked very real; I doubt you could tell his real hair on the top of his head from the hair that was bought for the top of his head.

Sad, inhuman nature, how idiots thought, treated and drove an innocent person to teACT to their hate and insensitivity....yesterday and still today. One is different only in the intolerant's eyes. He/she sees him/herself no different to anyone else.
39:52 The sheriff asks ben where Hoss is going and Ben avoids answering. Then at 40:32 the sheriff asks Ben if he's ready to lead them out to granite point. Suddenly out of thin air he knows where the guy went? 38:35 Ben tells Hoss he killed a girl last night and Hoss doesn't really look surprised or shocked. Very poor acting from Dan Blocker in that scene.
Hoss you’re telling Adam and Joe to go on home that he has some talking he needs to do to the big man. I just gotta tell you that that Ben probably isn’t going to like that and it just ain’t always real safe to poke PopPa Bear Ben. 😅
This doesn't make sense Joe is to you young to drink not Michael Landon but Joe is only 20 here at least he has to be cause on season 4 on one ep Ben tells a girl Joe just turned 22 so that mean season 3 he was 21 season 2 20 and season 1 19. And if you have to be 21 to be in a bar Joe shouldn't be in there on season 1 and 2 drinking
Before people knew heat kills germs, they drank way more beer than they drank water. This includes children. Beer got heated because people thought heating it was part of the process, and then they let it cool. I think germs were discovered by a Frenchman, Louis Pasteur.
Dan Blocker was the heart and soul of Bonanza. When he passed on, the show ended.
I couldn’t agree with you more!
lo mismo hubiera pasado si se hubiera muerto otro, el alma de bonanza eran los tres Lorne Greeen, Michael Landon y Dan Blocker

I so appreciate people like you that take the time to post this stuff about the actors. Thanks!!
🖖Thanks
It wouldn't be the last time Cal Bolder appeared. Just look at "The Fighters."
That's so wholesome, thanks for sharing this
Thanks for the info!
Hoss, you were fighting because Arnie threw Adam halfway across the street and was mopping the floor with Joe. One of the best episodes.
🤣😂🤪
Good ole Hoss. Gotta lovem.❤️
There are certain episodes that connect with real life and people...this is one of them.
"Of Mice and Men". That's where the idea came from.

"The Fighters" showed what else could have become of Arnie: a guy that went too far in the other direction.
One of my favorite shows, glad i can share it with my kids now.

Bingo. This was about 60 years before the term was coined for a guy who was crazy about a girl who was just using him.
The best episode ever.... he needs only love and patience. 😥😥😥😥😥😥😥
Happy you enjoyed it! 🤠✌🍿📺
This episode is like Of Mice and Men kind of
It is Of Mine and Men.
I read it was based on it. Although I'm glad they didn't make Hoss have to shoot Arnie.
So interesting to see a very young Leonard Nimoy in this kind of role.
I had to do a double take. I didn't even notice it was Leonard Nimoy at first.

You can tell Dan blocker had stuntmen during the fight scenes
"It sounds as thought it were. . " says Pa. So nice to hear good English!!A tv character undestanding the hypothetical!
Spock in a saloon! To add Cal Bolder was married to Billie, for almost 50 years, had children and grandchildren. One of the grandchildren? Dain Craver runs an orchard named CraveOrganics.
Sad, but a good story👍 👌👌😁✌🥰😘
Seems like where Mel Brooks got the idea for Mongo in Blazing Saddles.
Funny how Hoss's stuntman was never as big as he was.
I was wondering about that. It was a great fight scene.
Once again, a great message from Bonanza!
I'm such a bear type guy too.
Thanks a lot for uploading and sharing this old series.

Bang on Queen the Cartwright’s arrived for their share of troubles.

18:26, Sherry Bell and crew make fun of Arnie.
Best fight scene 😂
It must have been a tough life being a saloon owner in the old west, bar room fights with the furnishings and fittings all broken and shot up.
They find replacements in the the prop department 😂
Its sad people try to be a friend to help you but sometimes people just dont learn
Remake of "Of Mice and Men". Still very effective.
They never could find a stunt double that looked like Dan Blocker, could they?
Talk about icons in this episode.
@7:30 Hoss is fighting Arnie because he wants his waistcoat back that he used to wear at the beginning of season 1.
