I think Emily Blunt's character was clearly meant to be a doctor or nurse. She was able to search through the medications at the pharmacy to find something for her son, she checked her own blood pressure, listened to the baby's heartbeat, etc. So I think that's meant to be an explanation for how easily she handled the birth and clean-up.
My complaint with that is that she was checking her blood pressure completely wrong? I mean she wasn't wearing a stethoscope while doing it, which is needed to actually check blood pressure.
Beatness I noticed that too but you can actually see the first noise and last noise. Once you've done it enough times you can probably get it within plus or minus 5 without listening.
She also looked like she had a peripheral IV inserted into her for blood transfusion most likely. I saw her bandaged hand after the father died and she was hugging her kids
You can take blood pressure watching how the needle moves only . Not as good ; but doable . Also using a finger to fell the brachial pulse when doing it is another way .
Grace! The girl wasn't left behind because she was a girl, She was left behind because she is deaf. She literally cannot sense her surroundings well enough because she can't hear. So she's a liability in this specific situation where it's life and death. It's not about gender.
the same reason the mother stay in the house doing housework later on in the movie, she is pregnant. She would be a liability. At the start of the movie the whole family went out together.
Tari agreed. I didn't think about that until late in the movie. However, everything about her movements would be a liability throughout the entire movie. But I guess they cut leave her home forever.
The amount of respect people had for this viewing experience is awesome. It was the same for my showing. You get an occasional cough and or shuffling in seats, but that's about it.
Well, I have to tell you that for a lot of people the baby doesn't just pop out in a few seconds. It is very unlikely for her to give birth with little sound. The fireworks lasted for what? A few minutes?
The family has been able to survive for so long because they knew sign language before the apocalypse which I loved. (And as someone who’s fluent in sign I feel confident I could survive lol)
The fact that the Dad Krasinski, is the only one on the planet Earth to figure out that the monsters are vulnerable to ultrasonic sound ruined the movie for me. Krasinski sacrificed himself, but this was forced/fixed as he is the producer and hubby of Emily Blunts. My mother deduced their weakness within 10 minutes. My cousin, who is a gamer, offered a different view. To search the planet for a Black Bolt or Black Canary type metahuman, to take care of these blind monsters
Grace, you totally missed the fact that the daughter was left behind because she was deaf and not because she was a girl. It has nothing to do with that whatsoever. As she was deaf, she lacks that spacial awareness which happens when people lack hearing and that's why when the camera was focused on the daughter, the sound was totally different (total silence) compared to when it was on every other character (ambient noise in the background). I'm not sure why you came to the conclusion you did, but hey. Also, the whole scene with the baby being born and the mother screaming was covered up by the firecrackers going off. Apart from that, great review ;)
Gari Clark Grace is, by the simple viewing of her past videos, a progressive-leaning individual, so it's easy to see why that was her perspective on that scene. I'm surprised she didn't put two and two together though.
About the daughter, she did blame herself and having her family pile blame on her for a year and a half after that would not have made for a healthy environment at all. She saw that the batteries were out and wanted to give her brother a bit of joy, whats the harm in that right? Unfortunately way more than she could have imagined As for throwing a tantrum in the middle of the apocalypse, my counterpoint is that since they'd survived for basically a year and a half without further casualties and it was implied that multiple other families had done the same in the surrounding area, life had reached a new normal state in which she could run off and there would be no consequences if she was careful. She definitely didnt help things, but i dont think shes to blame for absolutely everything. I loved the movie too
I don’t agree with you about the daughter. You have to realize yes they lived in an intense dangerous living situation, but that’s it a living situation, they have to live not just survive. You can’t push aside your emotions and relationship tensions. So yes the daughter wanted to storm off like a normal teenager. Why teach your kids math or English skills when it the end of the world. Why have board games and take the time to have alternate quiet pieces? Because this family wants to live a life, not just survive. Maybe it’s not the smartest outlook but it an way to remain sane because you have some common aspects of life before. And in a way if you can still have a life, love, children, and a family in this world then that in itself is a victory over the creatures
SPOILER TALK:- If I was in the situation as depicted in the movie, I'd simply set up camp right beside the waterfall showed in the movie !! No more worries of other sounds overpowering the ones I'd make !! #problemsolved 😋😝 PS- That's the only plothole that has been bugging me ever since I watched the movie 🤔
Hello Grace, I believe the parents are more responsible for the little boy's death than the sister. The dad took away the toy and put it right in front of a toddler? like... which toddler accepts so easily "no" for an answer... the girl made the same mistake (with the bateries) but the parents should be the ones looking out for them.
It wasn't man's work and woman's work. The girl was deaf and couldn't learn what the father had to teach his kids. That's why he tried to make a hearing aid that worked so that he could teach his daughter as well.
stelian cincu True. He was trying to teach his son the lesson that louder sounds drown out smaller sounds and they could use that as a survival tip. The mere fact that she is deaf meant he couldn't teach her because she wouldn't be able to "hear" the difference, thus why he was working so hard to make a hearing aid that will allow her to hear thus he can THEN teach her the survival tip. This was simply a problem of Grace looking for something "progressive" based to gripe about.
Ok Grace, for all your previous hype, you convice me, I'm gonna put pause before the video starts and I'm going to my nearst cinema (5 blocks from my apartment) and watch the movie in 15 minutes, then I'm gonna get back home and check your review.
The monsters made clicking noises in the film which, while I was watching, gave me the impression that they were using radar (like bats). However, they would only be able to do that while they were clicking and only be able to sense the person if they stood out. I think you’re right in that the monsters had some flaws. Like do they always stick around after a kill? If so, how did they get away after the sons death at the beginning? And how has no one else thought about using sound as a weapon?
Rylee Hall Kid was small. Judging by the lunging attack the monster did towards the kid and the way it splattered that rodent with a slap, I'd guess the kid simply was crushed to a pulp. As for the sound weapon, I think people were preoccupied with not making sound in order to survive and didn't think the one thing that could put them in danger is the one thing that could also be used against the monsters.
Lol yeah I get why families wouldn’t use sound as a weapon because silence is obviously safer. But militarily, your already making noise with guns and bombs, so it’s not like a weapon using sound would be any MORE dangerous. It was just a thought
THIS they could ecolocate but only when they need to then they rely on memory to move REMEMBER they are vulnerable when they open their "head" and they can hear Loud un-natural sounds very well without exposing their weakness and dont forget they are alien bio weapons they are not animals on instinct they were DEIGNED to kill, so im guessing they formed a gride like system where they were perfectly spaced out from each other for maximum coverage, also just like a zombie end of the world scenario, no one will predict that this very SMALL "sound" device would be effective, im sure they tried loud noises and low ones (like what the elephants use)
I heard that the writers of the story were considering making it a part of the Cloverfield franchise but then decided to keep it as a standalone film. I am very glad they did.
Dilip Tomar It probably wouldn't have affected it much at all. 10 Cloverfield Lane was great and not related to the original Cloverfield directly, they probably would've just put Clovefield as a name of a city in the newspaper or something. The creature design was slightly similar to the Cloverfield monster as well but this worked as a standalone so I'm not complaining lol
I definitely understand this review but when the son died and even the end of the movie it went from day 89- like 400 something if I’m not mistaken so it’s literally been from 3 months to a year plus. So I feel like the mistakes are genuine. They’ve all made noise their entire life then all of a sudden they had to stop and it hasn’t been that much time whatsoever
I thought that the reason the creatures were able to navigate throughout the house without bumping into things was because those clicking noises they made were like a form of echolocation for them. I thought that was pretty cool character design.
About the birth Grace, she did made a sound and do you remember the fireworks that the son did by his dad asking him to do that and help his mother So she made a sound at the same moment the fireworks began so the monster got confused , and remember when the dad gave the example of the river sound like no other sound will beat a huge sound and that what really happened at that situation, the fireworks had bigger sound than her screaming so the monster ran directly to the fireworks sound and left the mother giving birth to the baby that made sound but they solved this problem by going directly to the sound free room and put the baby in the box.
The point of the daughter being stupid contributes to the parenting theme. You do all you can, but eventually kids will make bad choices, especially in high stress situations. Being a parent is about being patient with them and continuing to try to protect and teach them. That's what I got from the movie.
I don't think the father chose the son to do "the mans work". I think he took the child who needed the most teaching in regards to how to survive. The daughter wasn't afraid and didn't need to be pushed from her comfort zone. The son needed to see the world for what it is and grow from it. Toughen up.
You're critiquing characters' mistakes as if the film could exist without them. Also, the children are children. They're going to make brash decisions based on angst, little rationalization and emotion. To fault them for that is just, well, based out of ignorance.
Just came home from viewing it and all I have to say is WOW.. this might be my favorite horror/thriller movie of all time! Love the concept, the acting, the characters. Love it all! More movies like this please! And Grace I love your channel keep up the good work, always looking forward to your videos! :)
*Spoilers* In regards to the creatures roaming through the forest without slamming into trees and large rocks/boulders, I immediately thought of echolocation, but then realized that if it were echolocation they wouldn't need the Abbots to make noise in order to find them, they could simply chirp like a bat does. (They make noise in the film and rather loud noise at that) I went to my friend to get his take on it and see if he could figure out how they manage movement so precisely. He looked at me as if I were an imbecile incapable of forming a basic thought process and simply said, "They don't eat their food. What reason would they have to kill humans other than they make noise, so it's obvious they do echolocate, but won't attack anything without it producing a sound." I proceeded to immediately facepalm myself for completely overlooking something so obvious. This epiphany sparked a theory of mine, that is what if the creatures were sent to earth by an extraterrestrial species far more intelligent than they are, but are also much more hypersensitive to sound and are using the creatures to purge the earth of noise in some odd form of terraformation. Well, that's my two cents, thanks for reading!
I was upset at the daughter too, but I really get how teenagers can find trouble by taking risks too much. This film is gripping and is (monster) similar to films like Signs and After-Earth.
Dude i had to hold back the dam tears i was in a group of 5 people one was crying all the guys were holding back the tears and one was in shock it was crazy
How did you cry, this movie was trash. Not even scary, the people in this movie are almost dumber than the people in the purge. Why tf would you have a baby, where sound is what kills?
Yes, the daughter was the cause of the dad’s death, but mainly because she was deaf. The same reason why she might be able to save the rest of humanity. I enjoyed the daughter as a character and what she contributed to the plot.
I actually think the opposite. Remember the Dad wouldn't let the daughter go downstairs to the office. But the first time she does, (after he died) she realizes when she reads his notes, "What is the weakness?" Then it occurred to her why the creature ran away from her and her brother in the grain silo. If the father had shown her what he was working on, she might have figured it out earlier and been able to save his life.
How did the deaf daughter know that the toy wouldn’t make a sound? She wouldn’t have heard it if it did. Also the nail in the stair had me cringing every time anyone used them. Why didn’t she just push it back down. It was so distracting
Toby Harris when she pulled the bag, it pulled the nail upward and she didnt realize it, then from that point in they had no time to fix the nail and if they did it would probably make too much noise
It’s not that hard to even just push it down slightly so it’s not constantly pointing straight up. Just made me cringe every time they used the stairs.
Grace of course she made sound, but it was overshadowed by the fireworks that were set off for that very purpose. They knew she would have the baby and made a plan to set off fireworks as a distraction.
That Nail scene really made me cringe so badd. And after all that happened to her, she didnt do anything about it and let that nail uncovered. I had to look away everytime they were running around the stairs..
This movie was great! So terrifying with a very unique atmosphere and great performances! I never thought this movie would be emotional as well. It was so sad when the father died. Also when the daughter realised that her father realy loved her and had done everything he could to protect his family.
Oh Grace... you missed the point yet again. Can't blame the daughter for two deaths. The little boy grabbed the batteries himself when he was told not to- that's on him. Plus weren't you a teenager once? Teens rebel- alien invasion or not. Kids will be kids, which made them more believable. The parents were "trying" to give them as normal of a life as possible under the circumstances. They walked single file because that was where the sand was....duh. Blaming her for not figuring it out earlier is just your opinion. Again, she's just a kid. Lastly, the aliens were totally blind. Do better.
I agree. Completely the boy's fault for getting the batteries KNOWING it would make sounds from that. Also, like you said she's a teenager in a terrible situation, and with a disability in an apocalyptic world no less. Her frustrations are warranted.
naw bruh...I blame the little boy for being a dipsh*t sure...but I REALLY don't think a deaf teenager would rebel during an alien invasion where they're literally being hunted like prey and she can't go collect some fish...that was a super stretch, especially after she literally saw her baby bro get turned into human sushi
Biggest complaint is: Why the hell would you have another baby?!?!? I had to constantly force myself to overlook the horrible decision made by these characters as soon as I saw her pregnant.
I keep seeing people say they thought the pregnancy was to fill the void of the first child. Is that common practice amongst humans, to replace dead children with a new model? Didn't cross my mind. I thought she got pregnant because life goes on.
Wow, I thought the daughter was by far the best character. I was rooting for her most of all. The worst was the son. Like okay, he's a very traumatized child but he really couldn't handle fear well at all, I'm surprised he survived. Also the daughter wasn't any more responsible for the deaths than anyone else in the family. They all made dumb mistakes, and ultimately the parents are responsible for the actions of their children.
From the beginning, it didn't make sense why they had the little boy walking behind ALL of them. Last in line with no supervision. He should have been in the middle between the girl and the mother
I didn’t cry when the dad died. I mean he was great and all but I didn’t find him particularly more likable than the rest. Plus it’s pretty much expected for any decent parent to sacrifice themselves for their children. Emily Blunt was my favorite in the movie. Boy did that poor woman go through A LOT.
I love your reviews, but I’ve never disagreed more with you. You have to remember that these are children. Even though the daughter is the oldest, she’s still a child. She made a mistake by giving into her little brothers desire for the rocket, but I wouldn’t blame her. You’re placing so much responsibility on the poor daughter. I truly enjoyed her and felt so bad for her situation.
The biggest insult to the intelligence of the audience. This movie wants us to believe that Governments, Scientist, and militaries would not have thought to create a Sonic weapon that affects an enemy that hunts with sound.
Edward Figueroa agreed. I thought that immediately. But I guess for the movie to work we are suppose to focus on the family being isolated out there. (even though no one was answering the S.O.S call)
Fox Trott We know that it was widely known that the Aliens hunted using sound. This was shown multiple times with newspaper headlines. So worldwide Governments, Scientists, and Militaries would be aware of this information.
Beyond The Trailer This could have been easily solved with a shot of a newspaper headline or dialogue that states the invasion happened so fast and overwhelmed the world.
You said the soundtrack was weak for being sharp noises but that’s literally the soundtrack of the shining which is considered the best horror movie of all time.
The only plothole I saw was "Why is she having a baby?". Like, in this world I would think it would go without saying that "we better be ok with the kids we have NOW cause we're not making anymore. Oral from here on out thankyouverymuch...". But even that can be explained away IMO because I do think they see a light at the end of this tunnel and that they do realize that they're isolated and that surely something else may be happening outside their area that they don't know of yet. All they have to do is survive long enough to get help.
I'll tell ya, I was in a large, sold out theater. EVERYONE bought into the silence. We were all in electric recliners and you could hear the motor humming from rows away. I've never been in a quieter theatre, it was truly bizarre but totally helped with the atmosphere of the film.
I disagree with the girl turning off the hearing aid. I think the film did a great job of showing how painful it was for her to have that noise going off. So I think it made perfect sense.
I thought the same thing. I was honestly surprised she kept it on that long. If I was mad at my dad and that thing was hurting me, I would've chucked it the first time it did it.
Grace I thought you said this film had a happy ending?!!! I came out so sad and depressed especially when John’s character gave his life. Nonetheless, I thoroughly enjoyed the film and was on the edge of my seat. My sister and I felt exactly the same way about the daughter and the family overall, they made a lot of dumb decisions. Plus, my theater-going experience I had with the movie was AWESOME. Everyone in the theater was so reactionary and even one guy made everyone laugh out loud during the scene where Emily Blunt finally shot the monster. Great review!
There are commonsense problems with EVERY movie that should've would've could've ben done, that's obvious. This IS the best suspenseful movie I've seen to date. This family grew up in this lifestyle... The father took out the batteries. Wouldn't you give your baby brother the spaceship without the batteries? Yes, he LOVES spaceships.
What didn’t make sense to me was the fact the the BLIND creatures could effectively hunt in a forest, for blind creatures they sure never had a problem with running into things.
Agreed. I hardly ever cry during movies (in fact, I can't even remember the last time before this) but I did during this movie - and during the very same scene. He deserves major kudos for being to make such a simple story be so moving.
I fell like she was making sounds when giving birth it’s just that the sound of the fireworks was drowning out her noises. Kind a like the waterfall scene with John‘s character and his son.
Thank you so much for your intro😂😂 because I haven’t seen the movie and I was so curious to figure out what happens and I of course clicked on my favorite RUclipsr to explain. But your intro inspired me to see the movie first..... so thanks😂
Also you mentioned her not making a sound while giving birth but she did. She screamed as the baby came out, just as they lit the fireworks.. as the monster left to go outside that is when she left the tub which was full of blood as you could see when johns character finally came up the stairs
"Its the daughter's fault." "The monsters is so cool." *Lady what are you talking about?* Emily blunt did make a sound when she had the baby, she scream but the monster didn't hear that because of the fireworks.
1. I would be interest in a Prequel not a sequel starting with the family from day one I think that would be interesting 2. I think the Monsters used echolocation that’s why they were making the clicking sound
IDK cuz echolocation allows you to see your surroundings so they should be able to find their prey if the monster makes noise. But they can only find them if the prey makes noise.
but they werent looking just to attack people. they were looking for noise. they could still have echo location but not recognize humans as anything specific. its just whether or not it made noise. when bats or dolphins use echo location, they know what theyre looking for. these creature seem to attack only noisy things regardless of what it is.
You know what my greatest reaction to this movie was? NOT finishing eating my popcorn because it was so quiet in the theater that even eating or drinking would disrupt the mood 😂😂 Great review as always Grace 😃🖒
Grace, you did it again! Your review is so enthusiastic it made me run out to the theater to see it again last night, and the payoff was great! I caught the details you mentioned, such as the Hitchcock principle of 3s throughout the movie. You bring an interactive element to movie viewing. Thank you for your channel and keep making these types of reviews :) And yeah, the father does not deserve to die.
The question I had was, "The sand trails they make to ensure that their footsteps were quiet was very clever, but does that mean they live in some magical place that doesn't have wind?"
I think the monsters did have some form of radar because they did make a sort of clicking noise. They also clearly had a sort of electrical field around them because the lights flickered or went out, the TVs went to static, and the daughter’s hearing aid emitted feedback when they were around. Maybe they could use that for navigation.
I could not survive in this situation, I have no doubt. I’m glad I’m not the only one who didn’t like the daughter. I sort of felt guilty feeling like “Oh it’s not her fault she’s in this situation, she’s young, she’s dealing” but honestly, she was just a brat at some points and I wouldn’t go as far as to call her stupid, but she was reckless.
The monsters VERY CLEARLY used a type of echolocation. That is why they were able to navigate and negotiate tight rooms and close quarters. It's also why they had to open up their armored heads. It exposed their vulnerable fleshy bits, but it allowed them to send out their echolocation "ping" -- which is also when it caused feedback with Regan's hearing aide.
I've never cried in a movie theater before in all my life but man this movie had me in tears when the father sacrifice himself for the kids it was the saddest thing I ever seen
in the middle of he stops the daughter from going in the basement. do you know why he was preventing her to go down in the basement security/workshop area ?
REEF 23 I have always been a person who can take pain and contractions are painful but I didn't scream while having any of my 4 Babies. I might have made weird facing and/or grabbed something tight but Never have I screamed and made noise. Every woman is not a wimp! Even though, we are not consider wimps anyway for childbirth. 😊❤️
I adored this movie. As soon as the nail pulled up, you heard the entire audience (who had been dead silent the whole time) take in a collective breath of anticipation. This was INSANE tension, to the point that I could't actually focus on anything else until she headed towards the stairs. I really struggled with a lack of sympathy for Reagan. The brother was a much more interesting character to me, and I agree that at day 200-something, they should realise by now that throwing a temper tantrum simply isn't going to cut it.
7:32 Reagan made it clear, as did the pile of hearing aids that her father had tried to fix the hearing aid multiple times and that they never work. She is well within her rights, both times to assume the hearing aid is on the fritz rather than being conveniently connected to the monsters. The additional visual cue of the monters interfering with the tv and electronics as well as the physical signs in the house made an feasible difference in how she came to understand. 9:15 we can argue that the usage of lights to communicate are also a rip off from Stranger Things. 9:55 if you watch again, you'll hear that they are making the tell tale sounds (clicks) of some echolocation. Which makes sense with why they have such well developed auditory systems. They can probably "see" the figure of the people, but don't recognize them as their prey when they are not emitting sound, but just reflecting it. 9:15 Bonus: Also, the demigorgan-esque look might be functionally relevant because the "petal" of the flower like face might work like ears to reflect more sound into their auditory system (the equivalent to focusing ones eyes or squinting) or close to keep painful/unwanted sounds out. (Like closing our eyelids).
Johns death was in vein at the end anyway because he failed to lure the monster away with his scream. The monster immediately came back to kill the rest of the family even though none of them made a sound. The daughter figures out the monsters weakness and the mother kills one of the monsters and prepares to kill the others. It made his death even more pointless cause he no matter what they where gonna come after his family and he could’ve been there to help.
Very good and fair review! 😊I agree with many of the points you talked about. I want to see the movie a second time around the 20th. The nail is a horrifying part I’m not looking forward to seeing again, it was definitely the most difficult scene to watch. I would love a sequel!!! The movie is doing great at the box office and review wise so I can definitely see this happening.
I'll be honest though, I'm surprised Reagan kept the hearing aid in at all. If I was an angsty teen mad at my dad and the gift he made me was causing me pain, I would've chucked it the first time it happened. Hmmm... Maybe I should make my way over to HISHE lol
I was thinking about the monsters weakness and it makes perfect sense. That’s why they go towards sound because they probably are afraid of it in a way. And it totally makes sense that the daughter figured it out afterwards I mean tbh I thought she figured it out rather quickly and a little abruptly. Like I figured it out watching if I were her I would never have figured it out.
To answer the question about navigating through the hall. Remember the echo location and the clicking? The sound would bounce off the surrounding surfaces to guide them through the house or anything around
You know where they could live freely without being quiet, with an abundance of food that is not underground? On a freaking boat...out in the ocean. I doubt these creatures can swim. You can live on an abandoned yacht fishing for food...Then it could be like the movie water world, thus killing this franchise. 😂😂😂😂
Yes! One of the best movie going experiences I’ve ever had. When the first boy dies at the beginning and the monster snatched the kid and it changes right to the title card this one man in the back of the theater screamed “OH MY GOD” it was amazing and was literally everything I could’ve hoped for
I think Emily Blunt's character was clearly meant to be a doctor or nurse. She was able to search through the medications at the pharmacy to find something for her son, she checked her own blood pressure, listened to the baby's heartbeat, etc. So I think that's meant to be an explanation for how easily she handled the birth and clean-up.

Beatness I noticed that too but you can actually see the first noise and last noise. Once you've done it enough times you can probably get it within plus or minus 5 without listening.
Beatness you can check the systolic pressure even without a stethoscope. That's correct scientifically
Yeah. It sucks for her and she understandably vents her frustration
Logansolo Howlett-Jones
She also feels that her father doesn't respect and love her enough to relie on her because she caused her brother's death.
Tari exactly
the same reason the mother stay in the house doing housework later on in the movie, she is pregnant. She would be a liability. At the start of the movie the whole family went out together.
Tari agreed. I didn't think about that until late in the movie. However, everything about her movements would be a liability throughout the entire movie. But I guess they cut leave her home forever.
She screamed when the baby was being born, it happened during the firecrackers. They set it up earlier in the film when he is setting up the rockets
Watching people actually tip-toe back to their seats was the best movie experience I’ve ever had lol
That's awesome! I'm glad people were respectful of their fellow moviegoers!
Beyond The Trailer totally! Nobody even ate their popcorn, the theatre was full and yet dead silent
The amount of respect people had for this viewing experience is awesome. It was the same for my showing. You get an occasional cough and or shuffling in seats, but that's about it.
This movie is crazy~ really unexpected.
Same here. People were so quiet to open candy or going to the bathroom. It was like everyone felt they had to be so quiet and were so into the movie
well, she did scream having the baby but the fireworks covered her.
Yeah but that also killed everyone else lol meaning thier neighbors lol
Well, I have to tell you that for a lot of people the baby doesn't just pop out in a few seconds. It is very unlikely for her to give birth with little sound. The fireworks lasted for what? A few minutes?
@@kristin123a It's a movie, so I can forgive the crazy time jump thing.
Grace just nitpicks about the silliest things that have explanations
She did make a sound giving birth. She screamed at the top of her lungs when the fireworks went off.
ikr
The family has been able to survive for so long because they knew sign language before the apocalypse which I loved. (And as someone who’s fluent in sign I feel confident I could survive lol)
Jamie Arena I haven’t retained anything in ASL I’m dead.
Casiano Montesa yes I know.. I saw the movie.
The fact that the Dad Krasinski, is the only one on the planet Earth to figure out that the monsters are vulnerable to ultrasonic sound ruined the movie for me. Grace, you totally missed the fact that the daughter was left behind because she was deaf and not because she was a girl. It has nothing to do with that whatsoever. Gari Clark
Grace is, by the simple viewing of her past videos, a progressive-leaning individual, so it's easy to see why that was her perspective on that scene. I'm surprised she didn't put two and two together though.
You can't get through any of Grace's reviews without her throwing in the sexism/feminist debate. And she never sees anything beyond that point.
And let’s not forget she was prepared she wasn’t afraid. The little boy still needed to learn.
About the daughter, she did blame herself and having her family pile blame on her for a year and a half after that would not have made for a healthy environment at all. She saw that the batteries were out and wanted to give her brother a bit of joy, whats the harm in that right? Unfortunately way more than she could have imagined
As for throwing a tantrum in the middle of the apocalypse, my counterpoint is that since they'd survived for basically a year and a half without further casualties and it was implied that multiple other families had done the same in the surrounding area, life had reached a new normal state in which she could run off and there would be no consequences if she was careful. She definitely didnt help things, but i dont think shes to blame for absolutely everything. I loved the movie too
MrKangorilla thank you for saying this, exactly my thoughts
Exactly! It's 100% what a kid would do in this situation.
She didnt give the batteries. She gave the rocket and walked out, not noticing the brother took them.
Yoke103HD Oh yeah, your right it was a late show. I didnt remember correctly.
MrKangorilla THANK YOU. Grace forgot that the poor girl is still a child.
Give Emily Blunt that Oscar...
Toppingsaucer7 I couldn't even watch the nail scene because I knew how well she was going to sell it.
No. Toni Collette please!
As a father, I almost cried when he died. I felt all of that! Powerful dad moment. We don't get enough love or respect for what we do.
👍
We salute you, Mr. Silent dad of the apocalypse!
Um "we don't get enough respect for what you do" every parent needs not just father's...
@@ellieclaromorales i think mothers get a lot more respect and recognition but okay...
@@leonardohenrique5172 Literally said every parent but okay.
And in a way if you can still have a life, love, children, and a family in this world then that in itself is a victory over the creatures
yes and it's only been like a year of this situation. She can remember being able to run and be free etc
Agree 110%
Nah Regan behaved like a brat- she was literally responsible for her brothers death.
SPOILER TALK:-
If I was in the situation as depicted in the movie, I'd simply set up camp right beside the waterfall showed in the movie !! No more worries of other sounds overpowering the ones I'd make !!
#problemsolved 😋😝
PS- That's the only plothole that has been bugging me ever since I watched the movie 🤔
VERY good solution!
Yep my immediate thought, I thought that the waterfall was where they were going to take the Emily Blunt to give birth.
SC The trailer spoiled that part for me... I knew she'd go to give birth inside the bathtub... 😅
I figured that's where they went to conceive that baby 😂
I kept thinking that too haha
Hello Grace, I believe the parents are more responsible for the little boy's death than the sister. The dad took away the toy and put it right in front of a toddler? like... which toddler accepts so easily "no" for an answer... the girl made the same mistake (with the bateries) but the parents should be the ones looking out for them.
Yup. The parents screwed up there.
It wasn't man's work and woman's work. The girl was deaf and couldn't learn what the father had to teach his kids. That's why he tried to make a hearing aid that worked so that he could teach his daughter as well.
stelian cincu
True.
100% yep
Ok Grace, for all your previous hype, you convice me, I'm gonna put pause before the video starts and I'm going to my nearst cinema (5 blocks from my apartment) and watch the movie in 15 minutes, then I'm gonna get back home and check your review.
Yay! Good decision!
As it did me!
Tell us what did you think.
I'm guessing Albert's still tip-toeing back to his apartment hence the lack of update.
Xad He probably sneezed and got eaten.
Rylee Hall
Kid was small.
Why would I use sound as a weapon when that attracts them if I fuck around and the sound doesn’t work or something my whole family is screwed 😂
Lol yeah I get why families wouldn’t use sound as a weapon because silence is obviously safer. But militarily, your already making noise with guns and bombs, so it’s not like a weapon using sound would be any MORE dangerous. It was just a thought
THIS
they could ecolocate but only when they need to then they rely on memory to move
REMEMBER they are vulnerable when they open their "head" and they can hear Loud un-natural sounds very well without exposing their weakness
and dont forget they are alien bio weapons they are not animals on instinct they were DEIGNED to kill, so im guessing they formed a gride like system where they were perfectly spaced out from each other for maximum coverage, also just like a zombie end of the world scenario, no one will predict that this very SMALL "sound" device would be effective, im sure they tried loud noises and low ones (like what the elephants use)
I’m semi surprised JJ Abrams didn’t try to acquire this to be part of the clover field universe instead of the god particle one.
I believe it was actually going to be a cloverfield movie but paramount then believed it would be able to be an original movie to carry itself
Surprisingly Michael Bay is a producer
I definitely understand this review but when the son died and even the end of the movie it went from day 89- like 400 something if I’m not mistaken so it’s literally been from 3 months to a year plus. So I feel like the mistakes are genuine. They’ve all made noise their entire life then all of a sudden they had to stop and it hasn’t been that much time whatsoever
I thought that the reason the creatures were able to navigate throughout the house without bumping into things was because those clicking noises they made were like a form of echolocation for them. I thought that was pretty cool character design.
About the birth Grace, she did made a sound and do you remember the fireworks that the son did by his dad asking him to do that and help his mother
So she made a sound at the same moment the fireworks began so the monster got confused , and remember when the dad gave the example of the river sound like no other sound will beat a huge sound and that what really happened at that situation, the fireworks had bigger sound than her screaming so the monster ran directly to the fireworks sound and left the mother giving birth to the baby that made sound but they solved this problem by going directly to the sound free room and put the baby in the box.
The point of the daughter being stupid contributes to the parenting theme. You do all you can, but eventually kids will make bad choices, especially in high stress situations. Being a parent is about being patient with them and continuing to try to protect and teach them. That's what I got from the movie.
Love it!
Oh boy oh boy. Since Grace said she burst into tears, I have been looking forward to this review.
The monsters used echo-location to tell where they were going. That was the clicking noise they kept making.
Just came home from viewing it and all I have to say is WOW.. this might be my favorite horror/thriller movie of all time! Love the concept, the acting, the characters. Love it all! More movies like this please! And Grace I love your channel keep up the good work, always looking forward to your videos! :)
*Spoilers*
In regards to the creatures roaming through the forest without slamming into trees and large rocks/boulders, I immediately thought of echolocation, but then realized that if it were echolocation they wouldn't need the Abbots to make noise in order to find them, they could simply chirp like a bat does. (They make noise in the film and rather loud noise at that)
I went to my friend to get his take on it and see if he could figure out how they manage movement so precisely.
We're all you and our heads hurt
I was upset at the daughter too, but I really get how teenagers can find trouble by taking risks too much.
This film is gripping and is (monster) similar to films like Signs and After-Earth.
They nail was the scariest thing every time they walked on it i was like “careful with the nail girl”
This is the first horror movie that I actually had tears in my eyes I will see it again but can this movie be called a monster movie?
Bobby Stephen I would say yes. Although not in the vein of Godzilla or King Kong but definitely a “monster movie”.
ThatDuckInASuit They probably didn't know it was going to happen
Bobby Stephen Maybe so, but this movie was still disappointing
Please never put a spider on screen again lol
Bahahaaa I cringed worse than the nail!
Kelly Joule wow you're so pretty!! 🌷🌹🌹
Also Blunt's character did realize she made a mistake by not carrying their youngest because she did have her hands free.
ConcreteRoseCJ Teenagers rebel no matter the circumstances. They don't need a reason to not want to do what you've asked them to do.
Milton Hunter "teens rebel, alien invasion or not". 😂😂 That struck me as absolutely hilarious! And I agree with you
Biggest complaint is: Why the hell would you have another baby?!?!? I had to constantly force myself to overlook the horrible decision made by these characters as soon as I saw her pregnant.
Abel Juarez I think she was pregnant just before the monsters appeared
Sweet Karma she wasnt. It was after.
No they decided to have a baby I thought cuz of the loss of the other kid.
Tom Pennock it's still a very stupid idea. Why would they risk all of their lives, just to fill the void their child left.
"And as I expected, it hurt like the Dickens." Hahahahahaha!
From the beginning, it didn't make sense why they had the little boy walking behind ALL of them. Last in line with no supervision. He should have been in the middle between the girl and the mother
Need more jessica Chastain
Diao Chan No
YES! lol
😂😂😂😂😂😂
she was in another great bunker movie ''take shelter''
Yikes - that didn't occur to me AT ALL but excellent point!
The whole movie was in the perspective of the family. We don't know if the government figured out a way yet. We know as much as the family knows.
The son was responsible for the fathers death because he screamed dad
The only plothole I saw was "Why is she having a baby?". Like, in this world I would think it would go without saying that "we better be ok with the kids we have NOW cause we're not making anymore. Oral from here on out thankyouverymuch...". But even that can be explained away IMO because I do think they see a light at the end of this tunnel and that they do realize that they're isolated and that surely something else may be happening outside their area that they don't know of yet. All they have to do is survive long enough to get help.
"Maybe he should have played Mary Poppins" LOL
let’s talk about that cold open!! so good!!
I hope it doesnt have a sequel, although that ending leaves you wanting more, I prefer it as a stand alone movie.
So….. what did you think of the sequel-
@@mrmcpopcorn9159 I liked it! It was great and I'm happy, but I still think the first was better. What about you?
Grace I thought you said this film had a happy ending?!!! I came out so sad and depressed especially when John’s character gave his life. Nonetheless, I thoroughly enjoyed the film and was on the edge of my seat. My sister and I felt exactly the same way about the daughter and the family overall, they made a lot of dumb decisions. Plus, my theater-going experience I had with the movie was AWESOME. Everyone in the theater was so reactionary and even one guy made everyone laugh out loud during the scene where Emily Blunt finally shot the monster. Great review!
Honestly, if I were Emily Blunt's character, that nail would have killed me. I would have given up right there.
There are commonsense problems with EVERY movie that should've would've could've ben done, that's obvious. This IS the best suspenseful movie I've seen to date. This family grew up in this lifestyle... The father took out the batteries. Wouldn't you give your baby brother the spaceship without the batteries? Yes, he LOVES spaceships.
someone please explain me about that audio feedback thing. how did it exactly work?
What didn’t make sense to me was the fact the the BLIND creatures could effectively hunt in a forest, for blind creatures they sure never had a problem with running into things.
maybe they can make things out through sonar but they only attack things that make noise. there is a difference.
dan tan yeah good point there
Bats do just fine in forests st night
ALso, Why are THEY BAREFOOT?? LOL. Shoes don't make that much noise. Their feet must look Horrible.
Thank you so much for your intro😂😂 because I haven’t seen the movie and I was so curious to figure out what happens and I of course clicked on my favorite RUclipsr to explain. But your intro inspired me to see the movie first..... so thanks😂
Damn, you know Grace is into it when she bleeps herself 😂
How tf did that nail get there tho
Just saw it today and it was so great. But how did the flood happen?
Also you mentioned her not making a sound while giving birth but she did. She screamed as the baby came out, just as they lit the fireworks.. as the monster left to go outside that is when she left the tub which was full of blood as you could see when johns character finally came up the stairs
"Its the daughter's fault."
"The monsters is so cool."
*Lady what are you talking about?*
Emily blunt did make a sound when she had the baby, she scream but the monster didn't hear that because of the fireworks.
1. I would be interest in a Prequel not a sequel starting with the family from day one I think that would be interesting
2. I think the Monsters used echolocation that’s why they were making the clicking sound
IDK cuz echolocation allows you to see your surroundings so they should be able to find their prey if the monster makes noise. But they can only find them if the prey makes noise.
Nerdy Momtality oh yeah that’s true
So I'm not really sure how they're not running into things all the time
but they werent looking just to attack people. they were looking for noise. they could still have echo location but not recognize humans as anything specific. its just whether or not it made noise. when bats or dolphins use echo location, they know what theyre looking for. these creature seem to attack only noisy things regardless of what it is.
dan tan good point, but if they're looking for something to eat, they should be able to tell something is running away from them, noise or not, right?
You know what my greatest reaction to this movie was?
NOT finishing eating my popcorn because it was so quiet in the theater that even eating or drinking would disrupt the mood 😂😂 Great review as always Grace 😃🖒
Grace, you did it again! Your review is so enthusiastic it made me run out to the theater to see it again last night, and the payoff was great! I caught the details you mentioned, such as the Hitchcock principle of 3s throughout the movie. You bring an interactive element to movie viewing. Thank you for your channel and keep making these types of reviews :)
And yeah, the father does not deserve to die.
The nail was the most terrifying monster.
That was an awesome review. Thank you very much.
So, was there only a total of 3 monsters? or did the monsters roam in 3s?
Willy Styles total of 3 in their area. Most likely more in other parts of the world
Thankful that the theater was quiet.
I went home feeling like I had to keep whispering XD
The question I had was, "The sand trails they make to ensure that their footsteps were quiet was very clever, but does that mean they live in some magical place that doesn't have wind?"
What happens if you sneeze?
I think the monsters did have some form of radar because they did make a sort of clicking noise. They also clearly had a sort of electrical field around them because the lights flickered or went out, the TVs went to static, and the daughter’s hearing aid emitted feedback when they were around. Maybe they could use that for navigation.
Emily blunt was brilliant, her struggle not to cry during birth made me super emotional.
I'm not sure about a sequel, but I'm 100% in for a prequel!
YES! AGREED!!!!!
I was very surprised it took him over a year to teach his son all those lessons! :O
she did make a sound.she screamed when the firecracker started. And even without that, I've seen my sister give birth without screaming at all.
Your sister deserves an award!
+Nerdy Momtality lol she sure does. It was her 4th, so she was a professional. 😂
Professional or not, those contractions are no cake walk! :D
REEF 23
I have always been a person who can take pain and contractions are painful but I didn't scream while having any of my 4 Babies.
I thought the the second half of the movie felt like one giant final fight sequence and I loved it!
Grace, you would NEVER want your kids to walk in front of you. They should ALWAYS try to follow your exact footsteps behind you.
It made his death even more pointless cause he no matter what they where gonna come after his family and he could’ve been there to help.
they came because they followed the truck but I agree with the rest of your statement
Loved the last few moments and you fill in the blanks.
Our audience was totally into it and right there with them , reacting at all the right spots.
Yes, but then they should be able to sense the family's location too then!
I can tell Grace that you don't have kids.
I thought she did have a kid... maybe I'm thinking of someone else
Grace, I love your reviews. They literally make me laugh because in this case I felt the same thing about the family.
