Gretzky was a playmaker, as are Crosby and Malkin, so I don't think being a playmaker is the problem. In Backstrom's case it's Ovechkin, and perhaps in Oates' case it was Bondra--the elite scorer who often got more of the limelight. But Oates is in the Hall of Fame; Bondra is weirdly not.

Backström reminds me a lot of Mitch Marner. A playmaker that works hard on both ends of the ice, plays a major role on both powerplay and penalty kill while still, somehow being overshadowed by their linesmate (obviously Ovi for Backström and Matthews for Marner).
