lycra makes you fast. I got into the field from cycling world and I can't emphasize enough how it is important for speed. All those marginal gains you mentioned are crucial when they go together.
Hello Viktor, my name is William López l am from Colombia, and I am learning skate, my English is not pretty good, and I don't know how to explain you that I am very happy by find you. I am 62 years old, and I brought a set of skaters. I am one of your folllowers. Excuse me. Where are you from? I expect you read this messagge and respond me. Thanks
TL;DW. I recommend watching the video but if you're really in a hurry and just want the tips, or prefer them in a written version. 1. Lower your head and shoulders for a more aerodynamic position 2. Putting your number on for races, fold it and use more pins to get it closer to your leg and more aerodynamic. 3. When possible get as many crossovers in going in and out of turns. As long as you can generate a lean for a crossover you should do one. 4. Get closer to the person in front of you to save energy. This means you have to mimic their rhytm to get very close. 5. Get some good equipment. Flip and swap wheels to use them for longer. Both position on the skate and side facing out.
You left out the lycra outfit although I doubt most viewers have the confidence to wear that anyway. It was even a relief when you changed and started talking about wheels… jokes aside, I like your videos. Your profesional speed skating perspective is good to compare to street skaters.
Thanks for the video. One question about the use of different hardness wheels. Some elites sometimes play with wheels of different hardness on the frame. Will this increase the speed? If so, is there a matching rule of thumb? Thanks.
Good Q! In some cases (mainly track or indoor skating), it can make sense to mix. If you do so, you'd want to have the softer wheels in the front and on the back, whilst the two center wheels should be harder. Make sure they're all of the same brand though!
Thanks for the tips Viktor. Would you recommend going straight to these low cut boots from fitness skates and skip the "semi" option? I'm currently skating on FRX80 & FRX310 and thinking of a 4 x 110 set up for getting into speed skating.
You're welcome! Yes. That said, I'd look for some relatively "high" speedskates with a very solid ankle support. Another way of transferring smoothly into speed is to go with a 4x100mm setup. (you can still use a 4x110mm frame and save money when it's time to upgrade ;) )
There are also some inbetween boots like the rollerblade e2 (with 3x110 or 3x125) You can put on and off the ankle support to turn this skate into a speed skate.
Always great to see another video of you. Thanks!
I will be amazed to see your great videos
