Math Strategy Using The Calculator. In this video we discuss how when you can use the calculator to solve math problems on the ACT® instead of working them out by hand. Sometimes it is much faster to type them into the calculator versus working them out. Even some complex operations can be done by using the graph feature, scientific notation mode, complex number mode and using matrices to solve system of equations. I think the TI-84 calculator is a really good choice for the ACT. The graphing features and built in functionality will come in handy for some questions. But you do want to be able to do some calculations in your head to save time. Used TI-84 calculators can be found on eBay. The TI-83 is an alternative. The TI-36X Pro might be even better.

There's also 2 other ways to solve for a single variable (i.e. the first problem in the video) on the TI 83 and 84 that I found useful. you can:
1. press y =, make 1 equation the left-hand-side [2(x-12) + x from the vid] and the other equation the right-hand-side [36 from the vid] and then do 2nd function => calc => intersection
2. math => solve => re-arrange equation so that it's equal to 0 => press enter => make a guess in the middle of the MCQ options => press alpha + solve
personally, #2 is the fastest for me :) hope this helps anyone else for the problems where scrolling through the table of values takes too long!

Instead of typing all the divisons with fractions out you can press alpha then y= to enter fractions and mixed fractions menu

Thanks for letting me know. This feature is on the TI-84 but not the TI-83. Might be not be worth all the extra buttons you have to press.

For the first matrix problem, why do you put the 1s for the top row of Matrix A?

Because those are the coefficients of the x and y terms. x really means 1x
