    Hi Steve.
    Caught your Periscope today with SueBZ.
    I help run the UK farming #AgriChatUK on Twitter and we are suffering from virtual Team communication fragmentation.
    One of the team suggested Slack and he & I are trying it out, so it's great to hear you are a fan of #Slack.

    This is awesome. We are a startup based in NY and have a remote team in Chile working with us. It is sometimes hard to track their work and productivity across time zone and distance. I use the Moodbit App to track how my team is feeling and communicate on the point when the productivity goes down. I recommend to give it a try.

As I am not part of any team I wont be using this, I can see that it would be great for teams, projects etc. Thanx for explaining it to me (us) - I can cross this off my list - which, as it happens, is gQueues which I find terrific for me. I'm trying to figure out why everyone loves Slack so much. I've been on teams that use Slack. To me, it is a source of constant interruptions and distractions when I'm trying to focus on work. But I'm trying to keep an open mind, especially since Steve Dotto - a guy whose opinion I respect - likes it so much.

      I think that its because maybe your configuration is off you can really choose what you want and dont want to see. I like that fact that all project documentation is in one space and is able to be hot keyed. I mean working courtesy goes as said if I feel like the WHOLE group dosent need to know I wont broadcast any messages or call meetings that are not needed.

    Steve, this was great! I'm taking the lead on recommending Slack for my team who tend to be averse to anything new. Our goal is to decrease emails and increase productivity and project manage. If you have any additional tips for me to help "sell" it in, that would be great. I may do a demo to show them how it works.

    Personally I rate Twist ahead of Slack. The apps have cleaner designs and keep direct messages separate. Paid accounts are cheaper at $5 per user per month and give unlimited storage and search history. The 3 pane layout of Channels -> Threads -> Chat allows for vastly superior organisation compared to just Channels -> Chat. Compared to the text-filled mess of Slack navigation, Twist is seriously good looking and intuitive. To me Twist looks like a version of Slack a few years from now. I strongly recommend anyone looking for organisational work software give Twist a try before Slack.

    Me and my team use Discord. They are both very similar in the way they work and look, you can even call Discord a Slack clone. But with discord you can add friends outside your organisation, invite people to server/groups and find new people and communities. This means that it is very identical to Slack when in comes to working with your team, but you can also use it with friends and find communities. One more thing I really think is better with Discord is that dosen't take as much CPU power as Slack, so it runs lighter. You also get a lot more without paying.

    • @ArpanDatta101
      @ArpanDatta101 6 лет назад

      How is Discord or even Slack different from any group chat? You can even use Facebook to add multiple users to a single chat and share files.

    I think that you can manage with gmail to do pretty much the same using tags and threads and groups, maybe it's not so straightforward and needs a bit more of work to arrange it, but more centralized, you have unlimited message search and great search tool by google itself.

    • @dottotech
      @dottotech  9 лет назад

      +Lucas Presmanes Justo Sorry Lucas, but there is no way that would work in my opinion, remember it is not just one person but a whole team, and the learning and discipline curve would be way too much. There is a reason that Slack is taking off, and it is because it is different than most of what came before it....
      All that is not to say that it is not worthwhile to organize your email, so there is value to the efforts you are talking about, but they will not do what Slack will do.

    • @johnangelico667

      My #2 son uses Slack in his work as an online tutor. I asked for this very comparison, as I have three email accounts, and lots of traffic (including spam).
      His answer is that Slack is a community-focused tool. It will work well for a community of users with a clearly defined boundary, like a corporate environment or work team.
      As I am involved in lots of communities with relatively little overlap, Slack won't help me integrate my communications as well as it will for some others.
      Therefore I am better off staying with a well-organised email setup.

      the short answer is you can't - Read Only channels have been requested from Slack users worldwide for the last year so hopefully it's on their Road Map. I think, in truth, the use of Roles and Permissions in Slack needs to grow in line with how fast the product is spreading. Channel Owners and Channel Contributors is a real use-case in my opinion now

      +Jeff Brown Work Chat is a good option if you are in Evernote a lot and your clients are as well. the problem comes if they start communicating with you in a variety of channels, yo can lose things then. Slack goes beyond Work cat in mobility, and is more "instant messanger" in feel.

      I guess it's really preference. Choose one form of communication and stick to it. Slack seems kind of "clunky" to me in the sense that I have to add someone to my Team before I can add them to a Channel or Private Group. I would like to see it more "open" so I could invite a client to a Channel without having them on my Team. Does that make sense?

    Can you do a Slack + Trello how-to?

    I'm just reading up about Slack and do not know much about it. We currently use, a hub site, one note, outlook, cisco webchat, a wiki page and a sharepoint site for sharing information among other things. would slack be a good tool to consolidate all of these into one location? I'm part of a team of about 20 engineers split between three different time zones.

      +LWfluke I would think it is worth evaluating, you probably have too many contact points now, and Slack may be able to streamline your communications.

    How can I set up an overview of multiple teams on Slack like you did? To manage different teams I always need to log out of one team and then log back into another team. That's pretty annoying since I also only get notifications from one team at a time this way.

      Are you in the desktop app? That allows fast switching

    • @leonarodenkirchen9490

      I use both. Is it possible only with the desktop app?

    Hi , I want to include a bot as team member in slack and that bot can provide information when any team member required some information is there any way to do it? :)

      Yes, you can freely create an app on api.slack.com, "Start Building", "Create New App". After creation you can always get back by api.slack.com > Build > Your Apps. You can add a bot to your app, and you can go into Event Subscriptions to subscribe your bot to events that happen in a channel he's invited into. If your bot monitors the "messages.channels" event, it can send a message to a web endpoint that you build. If you can build a web application somewhere that uses OAuth authentication, you can process the requests (containing the Slack messages) sent from your Slack app, make decisions or provide information and post it back to the Slack channel. Its quite a bit of work, but its possible if you can write an OAuth web app.

    Looks a lot like the Cisco Spark product, which I believe you can also use for free at the moment. I know Cisco are starting to put a lot of weight behind it.
