"So Yeah, We Tried Slack …"

- We tried to get Adam and the Sandwich video team to make us a video. They didn't want to because "products like that never work". Six months later, they were using it. Seven months later they were in love. A month after that they were shooting this video …
Check it out for yourself at slack.com

Holy crap! This easily the MOST engaging and entertaining video for a SaaS application ever! I have seen and briefly considered using Slack for my little start up (there are only 4 of us). But I never really gave it a chance. I read a few pages and didn't understand the product and said 'meh'.
But THIS!!! This video is fantastic! Not only do I want to immediately sign up for at least the free tier to try it out, but I want to rewatch the video a few more times!
I especially love the magic trick guy who actually got to do magic, the utility closet meeting, and woman listing off the integrations that we would cut back to as a form of comedic relief. I literally laughed audibly 3 times. It is refreshing and surprising to feel this way about a SaaS's marketing video!
Slack has really changed (for the better) the way my team and I work. Before, we used to have just Trello, which was fine at first, but having more and more cards & comments just to talk in-between the important stuff was a real pain and pretty much everyone hated it.
With Slack we got something we didn't even notice we needed: We started having fun communicating again. And that's a big deal for a small company or startup with a "remote-first" focus and vision.
i wanna start working in a company that uses slack, just because of that video!
Well then, check this out: slackatwork.com/ :)
Slack Gold star Slack team ! love that!
Or a company that uses their sense of humour! Great promo!!
It's easy to sing Slack's graces, it's the best communication tool I have ever used. It's just getting people to use it. I wrote a paper on Slack that I share with any organization I join to save them the hassle of me gushing about it and gently whispering its name in everyone's ears.
Why does everybody look so clean, neat, sharp, clever, cool, relaxed, happy, overconfident, humble, effective, flawless, super-duper, wealthy, healthy and kind?
+deloreanized because designers get it.
Because they are using Slack ;)
This is because it's a commercial. Someone who makes commercials know the pshychological effects about how to make a good advertisment. It's on purpose. Like any commercial. Didn't you know? new to this world? Never seen commercials?
Okay I just signed up with slack. Now all I need to to is grow a beard, become a hipster and start my own latte business.
This is a very well done video :D
Probably the best testimonial video out there. Well done!
As non facebook users, my family use Slack to stay in touch. With so many of the clan scattered all over the world, it's been a fantastic way to keep up with what everyone else is doing without having to resort to the FB behemoth (yes, I know google is a behemoth too). Using different channels I can be sure that the aunts and uncles won't get upset seeing what the kids are getting up to (when I say kids I mean the kids in their 20's), but I can still enjoy their shenanigans myself.
Oh how I wish my work would stop trying to shove yammer down our throats and join the #SlackHQ generation
Sandwich Video strikes again. I love their team and Slack as well.
I love Slack, and the video. Great work as always by Sandwich Video!
Slack always makes me a little bit nostalgic for Glitch. But it is pretty great.
Super funny video, absolutely love Slack!
Amazing collaboration tool for any team, even for school projects.
Our team is distributed and we do our communications in Slack - it's really easy and useful, but use case showed in ad is pretty scary ))). It's pretty strange that people can't talk at least talk to each other while being located at the same space.
Forget about talking to each other all the time. It kills productivity dead. Initiate a dialogue in slack and walk out of the room where you can't disturb anyone. Then come back and paste the results of the conversation for everybody to read when they so desire. Slack encourages reading, a lost art these days.
They lie when they say they do everything in one place. You still can't do audio conference calls with slack, you can't do tasks, it doesn't have charts. Yes, you can do 3rd party integrations, but for the most part, they only work one way. For example:(if you want tasks in Slack, you need to use BOTH Trello and Slack; which defeats the whole purpose. If you want conferences, you only have video calls with Hangouts and other stuff.
I don't understand, there are so many task and team management/communication systems out there. Why is that not a single one of them is made with real people needs in mind?
@Vincent They probably meant the archive only saves up to 10 000 messages from the past, then they start deleting the oldest messages to make room for the new ones.
Hmmm. I don't get it. If the central problem is that everyone on a team is using a different mode of communication, how does introducing another mode of communication solve the problem? Wouldn't just having everyone on one mode accomplish the same thing? How does using Slack do away with the use of email, g-chat, text-message, phone call, meetings in the storage closet, etc.? Without some very dictatorial top-down decision making, I'm not seeing how best to use this. Any groups out there using Slack who can chime in?
+thenewcolossus because you very quickly find you don't need to use all those other modes of communication because Slack takes over.
Seriously it is absolutely brilliant. We started using it when Skype (our usual IM method of remote team communication with both staff and clients) fell over for the day and it was suggested to us we try Slack and see how everyone felt about using it.
It was supposed to be a week long trial just testing the water and we'd probably go back to Skype - well that ain't happened. Skype is now used once a week for a voice team update call and all our other communications are now fully integrated into Slack.
Seriously give it a try.
+thenewcolossus Ever use IRC? That's what this is, with a nicer interface.
That is a slick video, Slack team. Or, I guess, Sandwich team?
Oh yeahhh....the build showed in begin of the video is the build used in the Scorpion Series....
Slack trying Slack. That's some Slackception right there
Anyone know the name of this song?
All these applications makes your data public. I'm not talking about everyone. But your communication is visible to an unintended party. But this includes emails to other email servers. If you need to discuss personally identifiable information (such as a customers name), you don't want to use these systems. Talk to a security specialist.
+j galyen Outside of this, slack is one of the greatest apps I have ever used. shenanigans and quotes (out of context quotes) are the two most active boards. General and team board we use for ASAP something is broke. Even if they aren't the most active, they are the most important and get the quickest responses.
I feel like a terrible marketer since I have never even heard of a ton of the applications mentioned in the video
Nice work Adam and team! I have 3 orgs on Slack!
For the Lite plan, I see, "10,000 message searchable archive". Does that mean that those on the Lite plan can only send up to 10,000 messages in total?
I swear, this is the best tech product presentation video ever!! (that I've seen)
Cool for startup types where everyone can use whatever platforms , horrible for corporates.
What songs do you play during the video?
Great video, guys! Increased my interest by 1000%!
Really fantastic commercial! I want it.
Okay so what's the difference between this and email? I've been talking to Slack uses and they say they Slack message on their phone bug them all of the time.
If you approach it as a messaging P2P app, then it is nothing different. We use it at work and it works well because we use 'Channels'. A channel is like a group chat but for 'things'. So if I am working on a project, I'll create a channel related to it. I can add in people or people can join in the channel or leave any time. They can look at all the messages in the channel.
This is a small difference but a huge one in practical life. Suddenly, you don't have to create an email group of 50 people and be bugged by people who 'reply all'. You can mute a channel as well.
For me this is a mix between emails and chats. It is more synchronous than emails and feels much cohesive to how communications happen between teams/projects.
Also, they maintain chat history and have a good search based on channels. Not to mention it supports countless plugins which we use such as Jira, Github, Dropbox etc.
I feel like a drug pusher, trying to tell everyone that all the cool kids are on slack and that it's better than email :D
Hahahahah... Love this video! Great job guys! It's like watching an episode of The office :)
crazy concept, but when you work in an "in office" environment, you get up and talk with people, keep meeting notes, have a central server for files, etc...
You seriously need an aggregator (yet another one I might add) to do that? Remote setups? Maybe.
Does anybody know what the music is in the video? Sounds a little like Django Reinhardt but I'm not sure. Would love to know!
(Great video and great software by the way!)
Hi guys!
If you put this video with english subtitles instead automatic subtitles, I could use the RUclips translation tool and I could to show this video in my company. This will be a amazing help because here not all speak english. Please!!
Greetings from Chile
amazing ad there guys - I love slack and trying to talk my team into using it! Its very cool
Is that an 80% conversion rate commercial? Love it!
I just wish the Android app was more snappy. Takes looong to load incoming messages. But yeah; Slack is awesome :)
What an awesome video.
Is the intro sound from Friends? It's really cool!!
I'm wondering if theres a way to use slack as freelancer. I would love to have a channel for each of my current clients, but I'd rather not let them see every other project going on. Is that possible?
what's wrong with Facebook for what you need?
every chat you make with someone is actually like a "channel".
and everybody use FB, so you don't need to "educate" your clients.
Great ad guys!
Was it an Apple commercial ? I haven't seen everything but iPhone, Macbook and iMac...
That must be cool then !
+lebauce or alternatively, they work in a creative industry where the Mac predominates
+Camilla Swan Right. The hipster industry.
Slack Slack Slack Slack……………"Slack on! "
Slack is true love.
who did this spot?
MOOOOOLLLLEEEYYMOLLYMOLY wanna make gwaquamoly mmmmmmmole. . . . .mhhhhhle
i am confused how to use slack... do I have to have the slack window open at all times in order to use it.... that is a pain...
+Lakers Fan Since 1974 No, if you use the web version just make sure to give toast permissions. Chrome itself will notify you. Or use the embeded app.
sousaflying Nice! thanks!
Like the thought, but until email goes away, it seems like another tool I have to check...what am I missing?
+Scott Pleasants My team in my office still stick to Office 365, I have no time to work with. Thats a bummer..
+Scott Pleasants I dont think email will go away anytime soon. The userbase is almost 100% for all any business entities.
+Scott Pleasants But you can use Slack INSTEAD of email. Like if you need to send a file to 3 people in your team you can use Slack instead.. it's easier to keep tabs when everything is in one place
Still does not solve the problem of having multiple applications to check. I love the idea of it, but in a large organization, it takes a culture shift from email. In a corporate context, email is ingrained among other tools like SAP, BBM, etc. In short, you say one tool for communications...I say it is just another thing that is pinging/buzzing.
I think that this is a great tool for startups or even small businesses that are growing. I can actually keep open communications and tabs on my team via Yammer, which is included in our Office 365 subscription or using Asana.
With tools like Asana, Podio, Wunderlist, Yammer and Socialcast, I have project managment and open communications, too.
Some companies have made it a mode of operation to use email for only external communications, while using tools mentioned above for internal commo.
Slack has some great potential, but it has a long way to go and requires training to move in this direction
Good comments scott
I rode the Google Wave and then I wiped out, now I'm just hanging out being a Slacker.
What is the song/artist in this video? Love me some gypsy jazz.
Found it:
Cocktail Party
Eliot Leung
How is this different from Facebooks messenger?
There is nothng new. In our work team we usually use WhatsApp (and yes, it haven't good file transfer). Also, for communications with my colleagues i use Telegram, which have excellent file transfer even on worst and gov't fltrated internet connections. So, what additional capabilies provides your Slack?
Just. Try. It. It will destroy every tool you have ever tried in your entire life. That's a promise.
omg.. so many flannel shirts. come on. jesus.
Ok but, what about an app demo? The utilities and practical use? The video show nothing...
@Slack
What gave you guys the idea?
+jagjit bhatia I would guess from IRC.
@1:40 dude looks like klay thompson with a beard
My uncle is the co- founder of slack!😝
fun video... but doesn't answer if/how integrates with Gmail, Outlook, Facebook, LinkedIn -- or other somewhat uncool (but dominant) apps... (does it?)
It works without internet too;)
I wonder if Sandwich vids took shares from Slack to produce this video, they be rich now! $$
That's one funny and great video ! Thanks!

"Slack makes me wish I actually had a team, so that I could use it." !!!
Does Adam only do adverts for Silicon Valley startups. lol He is in the Robinhood app advert also.
Wow, just like 'Buddypress' on steroids :-)
@1:50: Did you clean your shoe at her trousers? A gentleman doesn't do that!
lol.. I can play this backround song in the start of the vid. !
Great Video as much as Slack.
have any idea who made this video? which production?
It's a real true story: Sandwich Video, the people in the video, really made the video about their own experience. See sandwichvideo.com/
Stewart Butterfield Yeah. i agree that it's real story. But there is direction for making film. like script, acting.. you know? it never means that it is fake anyway.
ho jun Kim Sorry - I should have clarified: I'm the CEO of Slack and worked with Adam and team at Sandwich directly. They wrote the script, cast it (mostly with themselves), shot it, edited it, did the post-production work, selected music … everything. We had plenty of input, but they ran the whole show.
Stewart Butterfield oh. i have to say that you and your team have done incredible things. it's woking for every people who i recommend movies. Actually i just start to use slack and it's also great. i'm working startup in KOREA by the way. it would be great if i get the chance work with you. good luck guy :-)
Wait, that first guy is from the first Coin video. wtf?
Slack is bawse!
So much advertising for a product that is IRC reimplemented poorly. Wow.
why do you think it is implemented poorly?
Samir Patnaik It lacks federation, for one. It's a closed (proprietary) loop. Another example is presence statuses; using a "voiced" flag to indicate a non-away user is… odd. Very odd. IRC enjoys proper /away statuses separate from channel member flags like voice.
Literally every feature Slack _does_ have is predated by IRC features by nearly 30 years. (File transfers including drag and drop, inline content display, presence notifications, private rooms, automated agents / bots, fine-grained server/channel/user security model, etc., etc.)
There are also many web-based clients available, plus a wide array of desktop clients in both free and paid categories, and even middleware such as ZNC (pushing notices to all of my devices in realtime, persistent presence, etc.) I use Textual 5; vs. the default web-based Slack interface it's infinitely more information-dense and efficient.
There's also some concern with the whole "how do we make money I don't even" VC funding bubble Slack currently enjoys.
GothAlice Thank you so much for the incredibly detailed, reply! I have never used IRC, so I can't put out an argument. I'm definitely going to check out Textual 5.
Any thoughts on why Slack enjoys such enormous popularity?
Samir Patnaik Startup marketing power. It's a remarkable trick to get people to pay for something they can get for free. ;) (Textual 5 is a commercial IRC client, though many, many free desktop and web-based clients exist.)
GothAlice You have given me a lot of food for thought! I checked out your videos, man. You have top notch production quality and your voice is soothing. What's your setup?
Amazing commercial.
Great video
I LOVE THE VIDEO!
Hard to take this video seriously when everyone's using a Mac.
#iFail
Lol u mad they using a better tool ?
Not sure if these people are hipsters or this is just a product placement.
Slack is web based and has clients written for mobile devices. I use it on PC, Mac, and Android. I use Slack for my team and it is AMAZING (oh and free!). It actually is a pretty cool tool. We are getting more and more towards a web based world where it doesn't matter what device you are using. This argument of Mac vs PC is so obsolete. The only place it should really matter is to the systems administrators that need to support it in the corporate environment.
+boo Jay You suck.
+boo Jay lol. if they were using PCs then you would see everyone having blue screens! lol. #uFail
amazing video
It is a great video. I like it.
We've just started using it for our Cycling news site cycled.cc and I can honestly say, it's changed everything for the better, love it!
well made ad
Is it too meta that I just shared this in our slack #random channel?
It funny how people in the same company in the same room are chatting with each other than just walking up to there desk- This this the end of human interaction
About 30 seconds into this ad, I think to myself, "God damn it, this voice, it's the guy from the TrueCar ad, isn't it?"
Being right sucks sometimes.
Advertising 2.0
I love Slack so much, it was the second episode of my web series #TapSlideScroll. ruclips.net/video/EczEAG0vh5o/видео.html
cool
Mega like
I like the positioning and concept of Slack. But I couldn't grasp how every female in your video had something cute (quite dumb) to say, or contributed to the goofiness of the video. Couldn't they have delivered some of the product's key attributes -- instead of giving this to your male co-workers? In some ways this validates the trend that Silicon Valley tech is a male dominated place. To appeal to a larger customer base, you'll need to give women an equal voice in your communications. I'm a marketing consultant here in NYC and our agencies are more balanced. I heard about you through Betaworks. Thanks for listening.
I quickly and randomly picked a spot and looked for the first female. 1:06 there is an Asian woman sharing logistics of slack without any goofiness whatsoever. Took me less than a second to do this.
How about you stop looking for things to be offended over? I mean I know it's 2016 and everyone is offended by everything but perhaps no one takes you seriously not because you are a woman but because of a mentality you have that has this nutty ability to make grossly inaccurate statements can't be taken seriously?
So a 2 minute long video has an Asian woman talking about slack for a mere 3 seconds is worthy of mentioning? I can't take Slack seriously when they don't receive enough representation. You're right it's 2016 and let's see more gender diversity. Thanks!
Wondrful nm
seems like good adveresting and unnecessary program....waste of time...you can do everything without this
BG Hamrick Yea, too bad horse in this case is the app. (=
Arttyor I'm high as fuck trying to figure if the pple replying are all bots or some kind of shit. This comment tree made my day
demencia89 lol, good thing you have weed. It's drought here
Arttyor Yeah that's why it is Slack is valued 2+ Billion (Yes Billion with a B).
+Arttyor Slack is a pretty good blend of IRC style and private messaging, and its actually pretty extensible and supports custom integrations too. I was skeptical too but right now as I'm adding LaTeX integration to our team (which almost no chat client does) I can pretty confidently say its something thats at least worth a shot.
