Epupa Falls (known as Monte Negro Falls in Angola) is a series of large waterfalls formed by the Kunene River on the border of Angola and Namibia, in the Kaokoland area of the Kunene Region. The river is about 0.5 kilometres wide in this area and drops in a series of waterfalls across a length of 1.5 kilometres, with the greatest single drop being 37 metres in height. The settlement near the falls is also called Epupa.
Kaokoland, geographic region, northwestern Namibia. It is inhabited by the Bantu-speaking Herero, Ovahimba, and Ovatjimba nomadic pastoralists. Kaokoland is bordered by Angola and the Kunene River to the north, the Owambo geographic region to the east, the Hoanib River to the south, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. It is an arid, sparsely populated, and extremely isolated region that was originally settled by the Herero, who migrated from central Africa in the mid-16th century. In the 1870s Boers trekking northwestward from western Transvaal settled in Kaokoland for a time before pressing on to Angola; the ruins of their buildings can be seen at Otjitunduwa and Kaoko Otavi.
The petrified forest is an area of open veld scattered with petrified tree trunks up to 34m long and 6m in circumference, which are estimated to be around 260 million years old. The original trees belonged to an ancient group of cone-bearing plants that are known as Gymnospermae, which includes such modern plants as conifers, cycads and welwitschias. Because of the lack of root or branch remnants, it’s thought that the trunks were transported to the site in a flood.
About 50 individual trees are visible, some half buried in sandstone and many perfectly petrified in silica - complete with bark and tree rings. In 1950, after souvenir hunters had begun to take their toll, the site was declared a national monument, and it’s now strictly forbidden to carry off even a small scrap of petrified wood. Guides are compulsory.
The Petrified Forest, signposted ‘Versteende Woud’, lies 40 km west of Khorixas on the C39.
Skeleton Coast National Park is located along the shoreline of northwest Namibia. The park covers an area of 16,845 sq km. This coastal region is one of the most inaccessible shores and shipwrecks are scattered across the area.
The remoteness, inaccessibility, and collection of ruins from wrecked ships make the name apropos for the park. There are over 1,000 remains of wrecked shipping vessels scattered along the coast.
Locals often ascribe this saying about the park, “The Land God Made in Anger.” The name was actually derived from the skeletons of whales and seals scattered across the shoreline from the whaling industry.
The national park is separated into two distinct regions. The southern region is where the majority of activity occurs where four-wheel-drive vehicles are permitted to travel about the park and explore the region. Any vehicle that approaches the north will be greeted by a skull-and-crossbones sign deterring any further advancement.
