In this project I will be showing you how to use the Home Assistant software in order to create an intruder alarm system for your home. The system will basically detect if the door gets opened without permission and then it will send out a notification to your smartphone. Along the way I will show you how to use a Raspberry Pi and ESP8266 in order to properly utilize the Home Assistant software. Let's get started!

I really enjoyed this video, and agree that home assistant + esphome makes a great combination. I have water tank sensors using esphome, ultrasonic distance sensors to measure water level, and little OLED displays.
But, for this application it is probably overkill. Xiaomi Aqara zigbee door sensors last years on a single battery charge, are tiny, and interface to home assistant using either a small zigbee usb stick or external zigbee box. They are reliable, and trivial to deploy. They are even used on Aircon Louvers to feedback on/off state. You could do the holiday switch thing as a virtual switch within home assistant (or just disable the notification automation).

7:10 Note that if you put ANYTHING onto the internet, it's highly recommended to setup a reverse proxy which tells traffic where to go, the reason to use it is because you only need two ports exposed 80 and 443, everything else can remain secure behind your router and more importantly it limits any attacks to your network to just the reverse proxy itself rather than your server or other devices, even better if you use containers such as docker and you can even use Cloudflare for free to obfuscate your IP address from potential threats.
Also, thanks to NGINX Proxy Manager, this was made super easy to do fairly recently, I've been using it for my home appliances such as Nextcloud and I love it. Edit: Oh yeah one other benefit is that you can provide anything with SSH which doesn't have it built in, like say a personal wiki or an ESP8266/32.

Perhaps they watch it on double speed, and noticed either there is no alert on the switch being disabled, or that reed switches through a wooden door could be bypassed with magnetic visualization film to locate the magnet position -- a few dollars on amazon -- and a powerful magneton the other side of the door as it was opened?)
A better solution would be a lock, and if you feel you need some sensing on the door, perhaps a few ultrasonic range finders on the other side of the room. If any of them change more than a small amount, you'll know someone is messing with your room. (Using just one might be easy to bypass if someone took the door off the hinges. ) An advantage of using multiple is that you'd also be able to tell if someone walks in front of the sensors.

  • @mjuhasz

One thing to consider with this setup: WiFi. Intruders can easily break this security setup with a 5$ pwnagotchi. You could improve that situation quite a bit by wiring at least the Pi using ethernet to the router. That way you could not only check for the open contact but also if the ESP is available or offline and send a notification if necessary.

You can use home assistant presence detection to enable disable the alarm. For example you can have the alarm disabled as soon as your phone connects to your home wifi and enabled when it disconnects.

The only problem - that criminal may turn down the power to your home externally, and such simple solution will be disabled. Many professional solutions use backup battery. In the UK some of the electrical suppliers will give you a two part device that monitors your usage. One part is a current clamp that you clamp around the feed to your meter. It transmits by radio to a LCD display unit that can be in you kitchen or wherever. I think people get bored after a while and find no use for this gadget. You might be able to buy on on eBay. We had one where I work and it was discarded fairly soon.

..or you can flash konnected io to an esp8266 device (preferably a wemos d1 r1/r2 since it has onboard switch mode power supply which will accept 9-24v via barrel jack or Vin pin so that you can use it with existing alarm panel power) which will then give you 6 preconfigured inputs and 1 output which can be configured further through konnected app ui and konnected also offers free cloud service and you don't even need to set up HASS, HOOBS or openHAB server. It connects directly to cloud. Then you can do easy integration with Samsung Smartthings app and set up some automations in it to get notifications etc. and THEN integrate with IFTTT to make applets for quick control of devices directly from home screen.

They show them off at security expos all the time. It's a well known fact that wireless security isn't the best, and it's often not much cheaper either, and in the long run with replacing batteries sometimes more expensive. Hardwired while it takes more effort offers a magnitude higher of security with a little extra effort.

It is usually a better practice (more difficult to break in and disable the alarm) to have a switched resistance on the door reed switch; than a zero ohm circuit closure. You then sense the door with a changing A/D loop, with a not open and not closed-loop voltage.
In that way, if someone cuts the loop wires, the A/D will sense the drop in voltage and alarm, without the door being opened...

I have been using Home Assistant for a while though, and I was thinking of using the phone integration, and it's means of telling if you are home or not, to do the job of that switch you added. That way I won't get notifications while I am at home (although I could set it to allow notifications if the door opens after I have triggered my bedtime routine, so i know if someone comes in while I sleep!), but I also can't forget to arm the system when I leave the house (I always take my phone with me).

    Interesting!
If my understanding is right, you would like to control ESP8266(Node MCU) by Raspberry Pi.
And control the Raspberry Pi by your smartphone.
    Can I ask one question?
Control the Node MCU directly by your smartphone is impossible?
I heard that MQTT can usable at NodeMCU. I just heard. Then it may possible to control.
Although we have to make code for both the smartphone app and Node MCU.

I think an esp32 hooked up to a LORA radio behaving as a bridge connected to hass io will be much better.

What I did was to add a motion sensor inside, close to the door. It activates the hallway lights but also if it's triggered then I don't receive a notification when the door is opened. So, if you are inside and you open the door, there is no alarm. If you open the door from the outside, then you get a notification. No need for a switch 😉

The funny (or unfunny) thing about the democratization of WiFi-connected alarm systems, is that it will become super easy for intruders to disable those systems : just jam the WiFi signal (or not even jam, a simple DeAuth attack might work on all those ESP chips), and you're good to go. You can achieve this with a tiny laptop, and probably even with a Raspberry Pi hidden in a pocket or backpack.
I'm really not a big fan of relying on a home internet connection, that is unreliable and can have downtimes, for security reasons.
As a smaller inconvenience, a DeAuth attack can render a home automation system unusable. I love my connected lamps, but I like them even better when I can still use a hardware switch that overrides the software. Basically, if network fails, I want to be able to turn on and off lamps as before. LIFX allows this by default, which is cool.
