Cities exist to concentrate large amounts of people into once space in order to justify the construction of major airports, which in turn, attract airplanes for the purpose of Wendover Productions to make videos on. This comment has been brought to you by Squarespace :)

Planes everywhere!
Cologne was shown twice and replaced Frankfurt, circa. 5:21
Labeeb Ahmad-Sanni also he just said that Paris was Europe's second biggest city with 2.2m and then said Berlin has 3.5m.
lol good catch
Crevulus Furthermore, London isn't Europe's biggest city, it comes in at third place behind Istanbul and Moscow. Paris is merely the 9th biggest city in Europe.
Yes
That depends on both your definition of "city" and "Europe"
I'm surprised you didn't include Choice as a reason why people live in cities. Cites offer a variety of things to choose from: what kind of job to have, where to live, what to do for recreation -- and this gives people the feeling that they are choosing their life circumstances. There is perhaps nothing as defeating to the human spirit as having no choice. That's the reason cities are expensive: for each thing you choose to do, all the things you didn't choose to do need to be paid for too. But we're willing to pay a premium in order to have a range of options available to us. Mind you...having things to choose among means that you are one of the things other people may choose or not choose, hence cites can be lonely places.
And in n out.. Only found in cities
That's pretty much the path of least resistance, you CHOOSE the easier life thus its a choice to move to a city.
@@cabron247 this is overly simplistic. Specialized workers (outside of agriculture and forestry) live in cities because that is where their jobs generally are. It isn’t “least resistance,” or for an “easy life,” it is just the only thing that would make logical sense. Why drive hours a day when you can live near where your high paying, specialized job is located?
@@elimorozov4769 that kinda is "least resistance" in a way since you mentioned commute time.

I'm from Metro Manila and I did not realize how densely populated this place is until I came to visit Brisbane. Jfc it's not even a joke. The astonishing difference in population has a huge impact in the psychology of a person. Something else that I, a random American high schooler, want to mention; European cities, specifically those with mixed commercial and residential zones, are even more efficient than cities with split residential and commercial districts because then cities can expand upwards instead of outward.

You said Paris is the second largest city in Europe, but then showed Berlin with a higher population a few minutes later. What gives?
he showed only the population living inside Paris municipality, not the full city (that has a population around 10 million)
Luís Pereira
More like 12.4 millions.
I also figured that was the case, but that's still an issue, since he's changing up parameters from metro to conurbation to municipal boundaries...I really enjoy his videos, but this one feels sloppy and contradictory at times.
Is not moscow the biggest city in europe (if you not count Istanbul's asia side)? Correct me if Iam wrong, but between London and Moscow are few milion people.

In Russia, the rules break you 4:55
Moscow: 12,5m residents (1)
St. Petersburg: 5,3m residents (0,42), not close enough to half
Novosibirsk: 1,8m residents (0,144 or 1/6), not even a half of third.
Ekaterinburg: 1,5m residents (about 1/8)
11 other cities with 1m to 1,25m population (0,08 to 0,1).
Russia is not real .
Russia is not a country, it's a prison of nations
Moscow's 12.5 mil is only according to official statistics. There's a lot of illegal immigrants from other countries as well as immigrants from other regions who don't change their registration, so the real figure is closer to 20m.
Yurii Cherkasov like many many other countries....
0.42 is not far from 0.5

Something related to cities you could do a great video on: Gentrification!
I'd love to see a Wendover video on that subject.
Gentrification is only a problem because rent is a thing. In an ownership society, your neighbors improving their property would be good for you, not bad.
Not necessarily. Even in an ownership society it can be a problem. Yes your house's value goes up but so do the property taxes on that house.

LOVING these human geography videos. Especially those of cities. Please more! Amazing job.
I hate to be that moaner on the internet, but I don't like that you said the population of Paris was 2.2 million. Paris (officially) is the tiny, extremely densely populated core of a massive urban conurbation home to almost 11 million people. Admittedly, this is slightly higher than the population of London's urban area (closer to 10 million) so it wouldn't exactly prove your point; however, London's metro area is still roughly 2 million inhabitants higher than Paris's, which also gives a much better visualisation of their actual size.
I also have to point out (sorry) that Moscow (by official size, it's technically part of Europe as is east of the Ural mountains) is home to around 3 million more people than London (also by official size). When we compare their urban areas Moscow has almost 6 million more people than London, and by metro area Moscow is still roughly 6 million larger.
Edit: oh yeah, the other city populations annoy me too; official city boundaries are just too arbitrary to use whilst trying to prove a point.
Once again I'm sorry and thanks for reading the whole comment.
Yeah I'm pretty sure if you include surrounding metropolitan areas LA is bigger than New York City too. There's WAY more people packed into the entire LA conurbation and all of its sprawl than in tiny little NYC.
I was just about to make these same points! Thank you for writing this comment.
Pfhorrest no New York metro area is 18M, LA is 12M, they are still 1 and 2, but Phoenix only has 4M, and gets bumped down a lot

Aaron Brougham I agree about Istanbul but Moscow is 100% in Europe... I guess they mean European Union.
Jonathan Wright I don’t know if most Moscow residents would consider themselves as in Europe. It’s a stick situation. A poll would be interesting
Taking Russia and Turkey out, London and Paris ARE 1-2...but only if you count the whole metropolitan area, not just the actual cities proper. As shown in the video, Berlin proper has more people than Paris proper, as do Madrid, Kiev and Rome. However, the Paris metro area (around 12 million people) is roughly that of Berlin's and Madrid's combined.

Apart from London not being the largest city in Europe, Paris isn't the second largest either. St. Petersburg (around 5 million inhabitants) and Berlin (around 3.5 million inhabitants) are far bigger.

Should'nt Moscow be the biggest city in Europe with its population of 12 million people?
Snooderblade Istanbul is largest in Europe at almost 15 million. Moscow is second largest. I assume he excludes cities located in pancontinetal countries?
Neither Moscow nor St. Petersburg are part of Europe, though they are part of what is known as "European Russia". Istanbul is also not part of Europe, before someone mentions that. Lastly, he is not incorrect. Paris population information on Google only lists that of its specific in-city population, which is about the size of Inner London, while the Paris Metropolitan Area's population, or the true city population because pretending that the city really ends with its tiny borders is insane, is well over 12 million. London's is 13.6 million.
3:50 Berlin, Madrid, Kiev and Rome are all bigger than Paris.
Paris is definetly NOT the second biggest city in Europe!
We tend to count the metropolitan zone around Paris as part of it, bupping the population to 12 millions.

@Wendover Production *Please do a video on this reason for the existence of cities.*
*_"Safety in numbers"_* Cities exist because of the *(artificial)* availability of all resources man needs to survive. A city dweller for example... can just turn a knob and get water. In today's cities, a city dweller can just about get any commodity from around the world that their heart desires. Also in cities there is also no need for a person to defend themselves and their property from raiders or invaders coming to rape, pillage and plunder. There is a service provided in cities that does that task. Even the danger of "highway men" when traveling between cities is a thing of the past, for the most part anyway.
Since the dawn of human civilization humans have clustered together for the same reasons. The formula is simple... the bigger the settlement, the greater the security.
ok you are going to have to specify when you say "1 acre of land is needed to feed one person"... for how long? one day? one month? one year? one lifetime? also is that including seasons when growing food isn't possible? or is that assuming you can grow food year round?
I'll agree with you on that one, I was a bit confused by this statement.
Many crops would obviously be harvested over one lifetime. Also food can be stored.
It means on average throughout the year. But it differs on what you eat. If you decided to eat beef, you can live around 400 days from 1 acre of land. If you would eat potatoes, you could get enough food for 7120 days from 1 acre of land (or in other words feed almost 20 people with same area of land.)
Also if you eat beef you will need cholesterol lowering drugs, diabetes medication, bypass surgery and you'd still of heart disease.

What about Moscow? Moscow is the largest European city...period.
@@realpolitiksanta5980 that's in Russia
The population of Moscow, a European city, is multiple times larger than that of London. I know that it doesn't really go well with the narrative, but you could've at least mentioned it ;)
Also Berlin is bigger than Paris
Ah yes Cologne is Frankfurt.
You made a view mistakes in this video (will only list a few, haven't payed too much attention).
1. Paris isnt the 2nd largest city in Europe, its Berlin (you even showed it 1 minute later, did't yout realize while editing?).
2. London isn't the largest city in Europe, its Istanbul
vanMrMann istanbul is only half in europe
So it's Moscow
But I think he was speaking about the western europe
vanMrMann the Paris metro area is larger than the Berlin metro area
This is correct in terms of city limits (he even put the numbers based on this measurement), but it's possible that he's referring to Metropolitan Areas. Metro London has 14m, Metro Paris 11m, and Metro Berlin 4m. Istanbul straddles its population of 15m between Europe (9m) and Asia (6m); Metro Moscow's 17m, despite being entirely within the European continent, is the capital of a country which too straddles two different continents.
I think when he defines, "The Largest Cities in Europe," he defines them as "the Largest Urban Agglomerations of Countries entirely within European Borders." Personally, I find this a little much to demonstrate a point, but I understand where he's coming from.
Sort of depends on if you even count istanbul. Its debateable, london isnt
I feel like if you sprinkled some economic theory and terms in there it would greatly benefit your videos. Guns and butter and other analogies are great. Frederich Taylor, Scientific management, hard and soft HRM, shareholder & stake holder theories, CSR etc. What your saying makes sense but it’s all macro and microeconomics. All of it. Just a little constructive criticism. I like the material and production quality. Great videos!!!
I still feel like I'm learning something.
The logarithmic distribution of cities' populations doesn't account for the surrounding municipalities, whose borders are pretty much arbitrarily drawn. New York has an Urban area of 20.3 million, Los Angeles 12.1M, Chicago 9.1M. Paris' urban area has a population of 10.6 million, London has 9.8M.
The largest city in Europe is Moscow at 16.8 million.
