Rather than changing the sound chip, there were other ways of improving the music in this game. It used a very "NES" like approach to sound, and could clearly be improved majorly on stock hardware.
@@Genesis814 Savaged Regime did a remix of the song in the first level. With some feedback given to what could be improved. Personally I like the YM2612 a lot more than people give it credit for. One of the reasons it got a bad rep is that FM is an art form and the Megadrive is very much a sound driver related piece of hardware. The better the z80a sound driver the better the sounds you can produce. Plus if you really wanted to (and it wasn't necessary as most of the time it was enough), the sound like goes through the cart for mixing :P . So one could have added a ADPCM channel or two on the cart, but the costs of that didn't outweigh the benefits. Heck simple hardware that would allow streaming the unsigned bytes to the YM2612 after mixing would also have worked.
You can find the patch and the sound pack at the pinned post but you'll need a Mega Everdrive Pro, a emulator ou a set of Mega Drive and Mega CD to run it.

I think the songs are good. What could be improved are some sound effects.

I'm so glad Everdrive Pro can now play MD+ games ever since it's last firmware update! 😃

Realmente ficou sensacional. Queria um patch desses para o Contra Hard Corps.
