- This video is the fourth in a series of video tutorials on how to play the Pedal Steel Guitar. The pedals / knee levers on your Pedal Steel MAY BE DIFFERENT than mine, every pedal steel player has a slightly different setup, but the principles should help you with your Pedal Steel technique.

I’ve learned more in 10 mins on this video than I have in months on other channels
Mate, thank you SO much for the LK/RK videos. Finally everything makes sense (well, 10%, maybe...). It kind of confirms what I was thinking - it's all about chords within chords. ABC is the bread and butter, levers are the cheese and pickle. :)

To any learners out there (like me), note how important it is that your PSG actually ‘fits’ you. Ensure the legs of your guitar and seat are the correct height to allow you to comfortably work the pedals and knee levers, as well as have your arms and hands in the optimal playing position. There’s lots of information on t’interweb (including forums in the UK and US) that will help with this, or to help you make those adjustments yourself. Thank you for the help Scott, it’s a wonderful instrument, but like learning to fly a helicopter!

Even down to what shoes your wear for ease of working the pedals
Couple of technical corrections, Scott: lowering string 6 a whole step yields a sus2 chord. Pedal B gives a sus4 chord. Your RKR lowers string from D# to D, then down to C#, so the going from the major 7 to the b7, then ending on the major 6th note in an open position chord. Good info here for beginners, although all these combination might scare some people away unless they think they'd enjoy the never-ending chess game of figuring out how to work this machine! I'm really enjoying your channel.
Absolutely John, the joy of the pedal steel for me and so many others is the variety of string groupings and harmony fluctuations with bar, pedal and knee lever movements. So glad you’re enjoying the channel, loads more Pedal Steel content coming.

Don't let the combinations scare you off. You can play 90% of your music with the A and B pedals and E lower knee lever. All the rest is just fluff to give the player extended chords and more options. It all started with just the one pedal.
Hey Scott, on the phrase you play at 4:23 are you only pressing the RKR? I can’t seem to grasp how you’re getting that Western swing sound there
