  • On 9th July 2009 (42 years to the day since end of Southern Steam) 34067 'Tangmere' attacked Bincombe bank AKA Upwey bank without assistance due to the failure of 37706. 73235 was called in to help shunt but was left behind at Weymouth so 34067 had 11 coaches to haul up the 1in50 incline. It managed the tunnel at 17mph and passed over the summit at a similar speed.

Thanks for this Mark. A superb performance by all concerned. I wouldn't call any steam trip predictable after all there are so many variables that can come into play and they're not just machines. Chris

Good work, but you forget to thank the Fireman. Somebody was doing a lot of shovelling up there.

O.V.S. was an ancestor of mine. My paternal grandmother was Dorothy Bulleid born 1894 in Hatherleigh. He was also my favourite UK loco designer.

May I ask you a simple question? Did you ever have the privilege of meeting Mr Bulleid? I did, he was neither quirky nor were his machines. In good mechanical condition, with driver and fireman who knew how to get the best from the originals, they were superb as ably demonstrated here by Pete Roberts AND his fireman.Having journeyed many 1000's of miles behind these machines in the 60's I know, 34006 giving me over 100MPH on one occasion. Eat your words. Bulleid was a genius.

Hi Peter - very interesting comment/reply, thank you! It would be good to discuss more, I still keep in contact with many BR/SR railwaymen, one in particular is also very interested in your comment. Peter A.

Wonderful...excellent driving & firing. Would have preserved steam by not sounding the whistle!
