  • Anti-Asian racism has escalated since the beginning of the pandemic. There have been horrifying numbers of hate crimes in 2021 against Asians and Asian-Americans, particularly in California. As of February 2021, there have been more than 2800 incidents of discrimination reported since the start of the pandemic. Disturbingly, a study from the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism shows a 164 percent increase from early 2020 to April 2021 in Anti-Asian hate crimes. Many victims are in the elder community, including 84-year-old Vicha Ratanapakdee, who died after being shoved to the ground. Additionally, 58% of Asian-Americans feel it is more common to experience racism now than before COVID-19 - and 31% have been subject to slurs or jokes because of their race or ethnicity.
IO Psychology Graduate students, Olivia Serrill and Ashleigh Wilson, briefly summarize the IO Coffeehouse session and discuss the current challenges and what we can do individually and collectively to act on Anti-Asian racism in our personal lives and organizations.
