A good tip for using water based markers is to get a piece of plastic or a palette, and color some of the marker on that, then dilute with the water brush to make lighter colors. I do it all the time to build up layers and to make the sets less saturated and more pastel
Loati I was giving a tip on how to get around the problems she was having with not being able to do a light wash of color on the piece, and the super saturated colors and lack of a need for premixing a large amount of color is one plus to them. I also received mine as a gift, so figuring out how to get a range of colors from a set of twelve could be useful to others.
I just started my own art channel because you have inspired me for already 3 years. I am trying to improve my watercolor skills and art style, this video is really helpful 💕💕
Thanks for this honest review, I can see how the pens can be counter-intuitive. It's similar to digital art where you have to learn the technical aspects of a digital tool before you can use it effectively.
This is my first video of yours i am seeing live as it comes out, you are so inspiring, this bird fits so much with the style of neighborhood life that i want to paint when i start painting.
This is a lovely painting and I’m glad for the thorough and honest review. I’ve used the Kuretake Zig Clean Color Real Brush Pens, what a name, and they’re lovely with their delicate brush tip and vibrant colours, but they want to stay put on the paper a bit too much to be so easy and chill to use. You can touch the pen tip to a paintbrush or put some on a palette first, but that defeats the point for me. They can be used just as pens with no water too, of course, though they’d be used up faster.
Your art is so beautiful! I wanted to make sure others know, for clarity, that this set is dye based "watercolor" brush pens. They are not a fine art supply. The majority of normal watercolor paints are typically made from lightfast pigments. Pigmented is a really misleading word as you used it in terms of saturated/vibrant, as these are dye based, not pigment. Exactly like most markers, they are not great for fine/wall hung traditional art, since dye is extremely fugitive. "Watercolor" as a term here is only used in the sense that they are water based and diluted with water, so can mimic watercolor techniques. Selling this art should come with a warning that hanging it on a wall in a room with nearby window means that the artwork will start to fade within months. EDIT: Someone mentioned I needed to be clear that I'm referring to this specific type of watercolor "brush pen/marker", as a dye based type of product. There are a very small percentage of "liquid" watercolors on the market that are pigment based, but they clearly state it to make sure people know they are a lightfast fine art material. This includes PH Martins Hydrus and Schmincke's Aqua drop that are in a bottle, but can be used in a brush pen in a similar way. There are dye-based liquid watercolors too, like ecoline or ph martins radiant. Nearly all pre-made brush pen sets on the market are dye based, yet simply label themselves as "watercolor brush pens". PS. I also want to make it clear that I mean no offense to the artist. I just like to make sure that this was clear in context to pro/cons of this type of product. They are fine for sketchbooks, cards, print reproduction though. Something I wish I had known as a beginner. Happy painting everyone :)
That depends heavily on the brand. Schmincke, for example, has just recently launched a new Horadam product: Liquid watercolors. Those are exactly the same pigments they also use in their Horadam watercolors and Horadam Gouache. Just in a little glas bottle and a pipette. And also the Horadam Brush markers that are filled with exactly that liquid water color and can be refilled with the new bottled watercolors. I had tried them out after seeing Laovaan revue them and they are literally the same. However, what other companies sell are often not liquid watercolors but actually ink (like these arteza are water-based ink too, an information you have actually to search for), with different binders but of course dye-based. And thus not only NOT lightfast but also very prone to chemical reactions with oxygen, changing color and/or fading or other funny stuff.
@@olgahein4384 I tried to clarify that I was specifically talking about dye based watercolor brush pen sets as in this review, hopefully it will help clear any confusion. I've also done an in-depth review for Schmincke's Aqua Drop, but these are clearly marketed as a pigment based watercolor that you can optionally fill a brush pen with. With the exception of Winsor and Newtons lightfast markers, it's an extreme rarity that pre-made watercolor brush pen sets are pigment. Nearly all of this type are dye based, so should definitely be used with caution. I'm not sure that I would use the word "ink" as a definition for dye liquids, since many companies make pigment based ink (platinum carbon, microns/waterproof drawing inks, shellacs etc.). Mainly the marketing around "ink" is just an alternate word for "liquid", and sometimes further defined as a liquid used for writing. I guess the main point we can both gather from this, is that art supply manufacturers do a good job at being vague. The lack of clarity causes beginner artists to make some expensive mistakes :)
@@KimberlyCrick I agree. Just that in my language, we have different names for different types of ink, but they are always dye-based. While pigment based inks are rather new, they are either "liquid watercolors" when for artistic purposes or "pigmented/archival" ink, when for writing purposes (which include light-fast liners, while waterproof is just shellac based and also often with dye).
Great tutorial and explanation of how the pens work! So informative!! I was thinking of getting some and have never used them before and now I know how! Thank you so much for your excellent info. Beautiful painting as well!! ❤
Love this! It's so colorful and soft! For your light layers, have you tried applying the water first with the water brush then dab in the color with the marker? That might help. Thanks for sharing! I always look forward to your next video 🥰
The pens are a two way street, you can blend with just the pens or with water. I actually bought these as "markers" I enjoy regular water color as well but these build up value so much faster.
It doesn't sound like I'd want to do an entire painting with brush pens, but I might want to try them for small details that I want to be very saturated. By the way, I liked seeing the effect you made at the end. I wasn't expecting that.
Happy... I depend of your videos to keep my brain alive... I guess we ´re all exhausted with the covid... and all there´s happening right now... but really art, especially yours and a few others that I see, really I wait all the week to see them... Make sense to my life for a moment again... Thanks so much! Hope youre doing fine... hugs from Chile! Fer
One thing I'm curious about is regarding the pens themselves: Do they get "contaminated" with another color when blending/making gradations without the water pen? Don't know if that made sense...
No, they are self-cleaning. You can intentionally add ink from one pen to another either directly or by mixing on a palette. Then, when you apply the ink to the paper it will start off as a blend of the two colors, but as you draw more and more, the added color will begin to fade and the pen’s real color will become more and more prevalent. It’s actually a pretty interesting technique for blending.

Ummm.....I love painting and I wanted to paint painting by my own creation but I can't create my own ideas......so would you help me to create some innovative ideas on art.....it will be a pleasure for me if u help me solve me out😊😊........waiting for your reply please.....
your human figures looks so AI if it weren't physical/tangible in real life. I haven't painted for a long time eversince I became depress due to human artists becoming obselete.
I like it! 😍 It’s a bit different than your usual work 👌👍💪 It’s nice to see you trying out something new 🤗
I can draw a stick figure at best, but it's still super chill to watch.
The video is on my second monitor while composing! 😊 Love it

I was thinking this too. I think the only pigment-based watercolour brush pens are by Winsor and Newton, and Faber Castell.

Thanks for the tips, and this is beautiful!! Those red leads are just what I need - just ordered mine :)
Putting off working on my own art by watching one of yours doesn't count as procrastinating...does it?
If after the 10 minutes video, you watch another one, then watch another video?... Sorry, you are procrastinating.
It does… 🤷🏾♀️

what a stunning piece!
Really useful review; thank you. The painting came out beautiful as well!
Really lovely thanks for sharing 🙌
Iloveit! I just started my channel and it is all inspired by being a fan and follow you for 2 years. Your videos motivate me so well❤️
Very lovely painting! I have missed your video, I am glad you are back :)
Those look fun to try out , I love how it turned out😍
Yay 🔥. Happy is back 🎉
what i love doing is drawing with color-pencils and then blend them with water ☺️

I would check out this *watercolor pen*
I love sketching and would experiment if it feels like drawing or painting.
Wow! You have such an eye for color! Gorgeous work :D
I had trouble with masking tape bc it peeled off some of the paper. I now use artists tamp. a bit more expensive, but I find it worth it.
