Thanks Nicholas! It also makes a great sealer to protect the surface on a colllage. It looks great and you don’t need to cover it with glass. I have been working on unique surfaces lately and framing with different sorts of non-traditional methods. Adds a sheen without making the surface super shiny. You can even layer it like hot wax.

Thank you so much for all you do to educate us artists! I’m so looking forward to taking your course next March (2025). I have a question about cold vax; can you mix with acrylic too, or it can be mixed with oil only?🙏🏽
Generally speaking you don't want to use cold wax with acrylic, as the cold wax has turpentine, which will not mix with the acrylic paint. However, if you want to use the wax as a finish/varnish once the acrylic paint is dried, then you can use the wax, but only in that capacity. If you are using oil paint, you can use the wax any way you want.
@@foreverjoy9334Correct. When the paintings age the wax can get brittle and crack due to the movement of the canvas. I recently saw a piece by a friend at an auction. It was once a beautiful, large painting, oil and cold wax, that sold for 20K in the 80's. It went for $0400.00 due to the repair work that was needed.
Thank you for your videos and the information you share. Can I use cold wax with oil paint in several layers or only in the final layer? I like your videos and thanks for your response.
Hi there, total newbie here. Am going to try cold wax on some practice watercolours. Any tips? Or does it only work with oil paint and acrylic? Thanks for your time (no rush).
I wonder, do you need to use some kind of varnish again over this cold wax finishing layer? I'm worried it will start to melt if temperatures are warm, or is this not a case?
I love what you did with the cold wax! So far, I've only used acrylics. I do have oil paints from a class (that I ended up using acrylics with) but don't really know how to use them. Is there something like this cold wax that can be used with acrylics?
Awesome. Excited to try this. Any thing to keep in mind regarding fat over lean rule when using wax? Eg if one has used pure oil paint or glazed the final layers with linseed?
Thank you for this video. I have been looking at trying a number of different techniques (as a returning painter) and the cold was seems to give a nice finish to an art work. I will definitely give it a try.
I work in mixed media and quite a different style to yours and love your vids and especially how generous you are with your time to share you thoughts and insights. However (!) Nick, I get SO FRUSTRATED when you seldom if ever identify your painting supports and the paint you are using. If you could PLEASE start off each of your videos with 1: Today I am painting on a gesso treated canvas/woodpanel etc and 2: I am using XXX type paint. Then start off. This would bring your videos up to a new level and would be rally helpful. Thanks!
That is fascinating and i see from 2 years ago,you really should have had more views and comments! I think that kind of solves a problem ive been having. I just hope it will work with acryllics. I just wonder if that surface would be a problem later hanging 9n someones wall? I live in Phoenix Arizona and its hot and dusty here.
Hi Nicholas, I love your work! Can I ask how you finalise a painting with oil and cold wax. Do you simply leave it after buffing, or do you go ahead and varnish it in any way? I’m keen to learn more about the final process before the art is shipped to your collectors. Many thanks.
Wondering what the ratio of thinner to oil paint you poured? Is your intent to dull the saturation and achieve a chalk finish? How does the oil paint bind when using this technique and are you restricted to fewer layers because of it?
I may have missed this info but I'll ask anyway: Oil painting almost never really dry. If you apply cold wax like you did with a roll of towel paper, wouldn't that alter the paint and become a mess?
Also selbermachen…lieber nicht…habe schon so viel Zeug in meiner Wohnung rumfliegen. Ich nehme auch schonmal einfach Acrylbinder mit oder ohne Wasser. Heute werde ich ein Bild mit Senellierbinder (leicht stationiert) versiegeln…mal schauen wie es wird. LG
Hi Nick. Can coldwax be used on top of acrylic? Does it protect the paintings from fading as opposed to sealing it with a matte varnishes? Also, i noticed the white paint u mixed was more liquidity. Oil paint comes thin also? Thank you so much for giving us ur time.
This video was quite disappointing. Not because it wasn't good within it's limitations, it just left so much information out about the use of cold wax. So many unanswered questions in the comments that should have been addressed in the video.

Oh wow, I thought it can only be used over oil paint
So basically, we can use it as a varnish right?
I love seeing this example ! Thank you!!!
As usual, so helpful, so generous, thank you.
Thanks so much for showing us some practical applications of cold wax. I like the the beach stone idea.

Thanks for this explanation. Sounds like a great investment
Great tips. Thanks for sharing this. I’m just getting started with this medium and your tips are so helpful.
I love that idea.. I tend to use hot wax and once dried paint over it produces a lovely texture. Thanks Nick another great idea.
Well, thank you….such valuable info here.
What an amazing studio. I love CW.
Thank you for this explanation. I really appreciate it.
Hi Nicholas, do you also use cold wax for your acrylic paintings ? Thanks
You can't mix it with acrylic. You can paint over acrylic with cold wax and oil, or put a sheen of cold wax as a finish on acrylic.
Thank you!! I will use this!!!
Great explanation.

Can you use cold wax on a finished acrylic painting as you just demonstrated on an oil, painting?

Do you use Cold wax medium to seal the Sellinar oil sticks?
What about on a a canvas? I heard it's not good to use wax on canvas, only board.
I use cold wax on some finished watercolor paintings. Seals it nicelt!

Thanks Nick your Video was very helpful, is there anything that can be mixed with Acrylic to get the same consistancy?
look for Cuní youtube wax painting water base
For acrylic you can use the extra heavy gel medium. Is a very thick acrylic medium.

What brand do you use and what is the approximate price in USA or Canada please . This demonstration was very helpful, thanks

Thank you, Nick, for the great demonstration. Does this wax have good UV protection properties for the painting? x😊
love cold wax and oil but it still takes time to dry. Can you use cold wax on top of acrylic? I haven't tried yet.
I'm all signed up. Is ok to be trying with watercolor? I'm new to it.
Thanks so much. this will sav e me a ton on using heavy damar medium. btw...have you tried mixing damar into the mix?
Are you saying that you can finish an oil painting with cold wax verses varnish?
Wondering what the ratio of thinner to oil paint you poured? Is your intent to dull the saturation and achieve a chalk finish? How does the oil paint bind when using this technique and are you restricted to fewer layers because of it?
Is this process/medium archival? I know this is an older video, but I'm hoping you'll be able to answer. Thanks 😊
Thank you nick great tip I will look it up x
How long do you wait to apply it on your oil painting after it's done? I know that varnishing needs a very long wait with oils.
I may have missed this info but I'll ask anyway: Oil painting almost never really dry. If you apply cold wax like you did with a roll of towel paper, wouldn't that alter the paint and become a mess?
Do you use cold wax instead of varnish? Over varnish?? Thank you!
I love cold wax mixed with oil paint I mix about equal quantity of both. It has a lovely buttery consistency.
Thank you
I would like to try it but have one question: Does Nick use a varnish before he applies the cold wax on an acrylic painting?

Can you use cold wax with acrylic paint ?
How archival is the cold wax as the finish?
Do you put the cold wax on before or after the varnish?

Hi, did you ever get an answer to your question about using cold wax on top of acrylic? I was just wondering the same thing. Thanks.
Would this work on metallic acrylics????
Hello. Can this be applied on acrylic painting for the sheen..?
Can I finish an acrylic painting with cold wax? Is it comparable with the water base acrylic paint? 4:35
Can you finish an acrylic painting with cold wax?
But you can’t use it over acrylics or mixed media correct?
Can you use it on oil pastel?
Question: That White paint Nic mixed with cold wax medium, did not look like Oil (perhaps it was), CAN YOU MIX ACRYLIC with cold wax?
I'm wondering that too.
It was oil - acrylic and cold wax do not mix.
@@Art2Life Thanks for sharing this - it was the first question that popped in to my mind.
Can you use it with oils?
I thought this was for use with oil but you seem to be using it with acrylics - is that right?
i just heard him say he mixes it with oils
He uses it for both. The small panel was most likley acrylic..
Oil :)
Why was white oil paint so much a liquid? Can you buy liquid oil paint ready made like that?
I was curious about that too, Nick. Do you use oil based house paint sometimes when painting in oil?
yes, it looked very liquid, what he poured out. I wonder too
I mix my paint with Liquin and Gamsol to get the consistency I want.
@@Art2Life I have been searching for this answer for MONTHS!!! Thanks so much!
This looks, sounds and behaves just like furniture wax. Could that be used instead?
Not sure about that one.
