PowerDrift Simplified | When Should You Use Hazard Lights

  • Hazard lights are an important feature on your vehicle to let other motorists know that you are in trouble or you need to make yourself more visible in heavy rains or in dense fog. That's it. You don't need to use your hazards when going through a tunnel, or riding in a group, or when there's light rain. Avoid using them constantly, and judiciously to communicate with other motorists about your impaired condition.

      I guess he briefly talks about it in one of the podcast where,
      he anticipates the safe distance from the vehicle infront of him.
      then he looks at the road strips, instead of straight ahead for a short time, until that idiot passes away.
      In this way, vison is still retained, if required slow down a bit.
      See, in highways you go at a certain speed and you need visibility.
      It's not a problem to turn your high beams to see the road infront of you.
      But, when you see a vehicle approaching infront of you (same or different lane), you should turn your lights to low beam and slow down a bit
      This will give an indication to other rider that there's another vehicle, and most importantly both of you won't be blinded by others.

    • @nileshlog
      @nileshlog 2 года назад

      High beam, hazard lights etc are not only issus with individuals, but also regulatory. Nowadays, with the rush to push the vehicle out of the assembly line, vehicle makers neglect to adjust the headlights and thus you have vehicles beaming directly on your face, even at low beam. The aftermarket headlights too are a big nuisance. No regulation at all.
      Also use of hazard lights while there is no hazard, should somehow be discouraged by heavy penalties.

    Hi Shumi and Team PD,
    I sincerely believe there are two additional *tips* for using Hazard Lights:
    1. While you are stoping on the shoulder of a fast moving road.

    Please suggest if this is not a bad idea. 💁🏽‍♂️

    • @amrit_gupta

      Hi Abhishek!

    Thank you! Can you also PLEASE put up a video on the gross and rampant misuse of bright LED lights, which can blind oncoming traffic even during the day?

  • @vybhavshinde
    @vybhavshinde 2 года назад +9

    There have been several situations when I've driven in Heavy rain on expressways and I see cars doing quite high speeds with the hazards on. Honestly, I think hazards shouldn't be used while driving fast in the rain because it becomes a lot more distracting to the driver behind and in fact hampers visibility of the surroundings to a certain degree because the blinking light constantly alters your point of focus.
    And Tail lights have been designed considering visibility in pretty much all conditions. The wavelength of red light is such that it can pierce through almost most of the conditions faced. And while following a vehicle at a higher speed it is easier to follow a pleasant red constantly ON pair of tail lights instead of a continuously blinking set of orange lights.
    So for the first time in the simplified series I am not in full agreement with Shumi and I say that to the majority of the audience of this channel (Indians), we should say DO NOT USE HAZARDS WHILE TRAVELLING AT REGULAR SPEEDS IN ANY WEATHER CONDITION. JUST TURN ON YOUR PARKING LIGHTS AND THAT SHOULD MOSTLY SUFFICE.
    I say this because the idea of "BAD VISIBILITY" is subjective. And everyone has different tolerances based on their experience

    • @SukumarBallavolu
      @SukumarBallavolu 2 года назад +5

      When you park off the road, I don't see any need to turn them on. It comes to common sense of people to understand that a car or bike won't be driven off the road when there is a proper road to drive/ride on. But if you occupy a considerable amount of road to park, it is best practice to let fellow traffic know you are not moving.

      Actually, you are using hazard lights for what exactly you shouldn't be doing. Hazard lights are meant to draw attention and should be turned on when you need help and it indicates other road users to extend help to the vehicle. In case you are just stopping and don't need help, you should keep your lights off to not attract attention towards you. However, in case of heavy fog, you should turn on your hazard lights to let other road users know of your presence.

  • @Lee.S

    Thank you Shumi (PD) for sharing this information. I'm glad that you used this medium to communicate this piece of information which is being misused too often. Many high-end bikes, KTMs, Enfields, Pulsars, etc. are coming with plug & play flashers which makes it very disturbing on the road. The whole purpose of a hazard light is lost and when they turn left or right, no one has a clue as to where they are going.
    I tried warning few people at times while I was on the car but it hurt their ego more by telling them they were wrong.
    Thank you again, I'll definitely share this video in my circles.

    • @Lee.S
      @Lee.S 2 года назад

      I would suggest if you can share another video of PD simplified on "when to use headlight high-beam". Seriously, if you can.
      I find this weird. We live in a world that is advanced and there is enough information available at our fingertips. But many prefer to remain illiterate/uneducated. It's a shame that most people in the cities drive in the night with the highbeams switched on. What makes it more worse is when people install LEDs or projectors without this basic knowledge. These lights create glare on the rearview mirrors and also flashes on oncoming traffic which can cause accidents. The govt has imposed fines but its only on paper and nothing is done on the road. Sometimes you wish to curse them instead of educating.

      No. None of the coatings or sheathings are necessary.... it's just a fomo feeling like Apple iPhone. You don't need them, they are very costly but it feels nice to show off..
      If at all then the coatings are needed at high end costly motorcycles. Because Fibre, plastic or metal parts of most motorcycles upto 300-400 cc are cheaper than these costly coatings..
      You can just keep your bike clean, wash it with non-corrosive cheap shampoos... If you really really need that extra shine than polish your bike with cheap bike wax sometimes.
      Else just think again, these coatings can't protect damage, just minor scratches or metal rubs.. minor scratches won't be visible from 2-3 meters away, and for major scratches get your bike wrapped with any colour or graphics you want... wrapping your bike costs 3-5k depending on graphics....

    This should be an ad on tv everyday.
    Not even the driving schools have an idea when to use hazards.
    And every vehicle brochure should have this in bold letter in first page itself, or as a sticker on top of hazard button of new vehicles.
    Thanks a lot shumi .

    This is a dubious distinction that has come to motorcycle riders for reckless riding, because a lot of idiots ride like it's a motocross bike.

      I don’t know why people feel offensive to ride slowly. A sensible rider always know where to show your skills.
      I ride a supersport. I’ve been challenged by another rider on road to race me. I said if you want to race so badly. Come to any race track in India and then race to your heart. He them zoomed in on a road which had speed limits of 60. I hope he gets some sense.

    1. Parking on the road for a refreshment break or for a toilet break during night with no other source of light around?
    2. If the road ahead is in a very bad condition and you are the one who know about it in day or in night?
    3. Riding slowly in highway really slow under the speed limit?

I usually drive in Pune n Nashik city n most of the time i find people blinding each other by usage of high beam. I will appreciate if you cover usage n placement of aux lights on bikes, i have seen riders who have placed high wattage LEDs at headlight level again blinding the incoming traffic.

    A wonderful topic to educate ourselves and our near and dear ones. I guess authorities should educate the existing as well as upcoming riders and drivers as well. This should reach masses coz the use of modified hazard lights has become a fad. Please also discuss about using of horn situation as well as when to use hi-beam and low-beam. I ride to and from work and face the hi-beam situation at night everyday. Many times have had near miss situations. Plz plz plz eduate the masses if the authorities are not willing to do so.

    Here in Imphal city we also use hazard lights at an intersection or a four way junction indicating to other drivers and cops that im taking the straight road ahead and not weaving left or right. this helps the vehicles behind me and the ones opposite to manoeuver accordingly. this is like an unwritten law which people follow here. i once got told by a cop for not using the hazard lights at a junction😂. btw he was not a traffic cop (standard uniformed cops constables also help out and manage the traffics at rush hours).
