  • There are many different lights on a car, and they all serve different purposes. Some lights are to help us see ahead, some are there to help others see us, and some are there to help us communicate. In this video, we will show how we use our car’s lights effectively to stay as safe as possible, without causing any unnecessary confusion or danger.

    Good idea for a video, many drivers do not use their lights correctly, for example not using dipped beam in the rain or fog, or having fog lights on when it is not foggy.

    Pretty good, but a couple of minor comments:
    Some models do not have the ‘3 seconds indicator display’ option (notably the Toyota Yaris) on the stalk.
    Some models have ‘automatic high beam’, which can be setup manually. To switch it on in my car, it’s necessary to move the stalk forward, thus it’s necessary to pull it back 2 steps to ‘flash’ the lights if required. Essentially, it only operates once away from street lighting.
    Some only display their ‘daytime running lights’ when the parking brake is released, even if the power is switched on.

    Optimal AUTOMATIC light control settings: leave the control switch in the AUTO setting. Along with DRLs (defined as 80% of headlight’s high beam power) a light sensor on the dash turns ON all of exterior lights when in dark(er) environments such as Dawn/Dusk, tunnels, indoor parking structures and when drivers “think” there is enough light while driving but there is not! I've heard that truck/lorry drivers in my place use headlights to communicate whether there are hazards along the road (landslides, deep potholes, dense fog, and the like) by alternating the headlamps' low and high beam. Back in the day, there were no radio communication devices as those were costly.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool

      We would advise against using our lights to try and communicate with others, as it could cause misunderstanding and lead to danger.

      @@AdvanceDrivingSchool The good thing is, drivers here know that the light-tinkering actually means something, to the point of it becoming a "driving culture". Now that I'm a driver myself, should a truck driver from the opposite direction gives a signal, I know what to expect up ahead. Still, thanks for your concern.

    Forward facing fog lights are little more than fashion accessories. If you turn them out they will pick out the curbs/sides of the road in bad fog. As anyone that has competed in night car rallies will realise, fog lights can be used as cornering lights on narrow, twisty roads. So they should be turned out at around 30 degrees, although some drivers prefer to cross the beams. They should be wired through a relay, controlled with a stalk switch that can be reached while your hand is still on the wheel, and wired to come on only after the sidelights have been turned on. Also, forget those fashion light covers as if you accidentally leave the fogs on you won't burn them out.
    A little out of the league of the vast majority of drivers, but it never hurts to raise your game.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool

      Auto light systems work well when it gets dark, as it puts the dipped headlamps (and tail lights) on to help us drive. However, when it is foggy or rainy in the daytime the system won't spot the poor weather and we will need to manually turn on our dipped headlamps to ensure we are visible to others.

      No, save your hazard lights for a real hazard. If everyone used them in the rain it would be impossible to tell when someone wanted to change lanes or turn!

  • @cyderman69

    Why doesn't the DRL function turn on the rear lights? I've seen so many people driving in the dark without rear lights on because they think their lights are on as they see light from the front.

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  3 года назад +1

      Thats how it is on all cars - there must be some regulation about it. It is a real problem when it's foggy or rainy in the daytime, as people must assume that the car will do everything for them and forget they need to turn on their dipped headlamps manually.

    Do some newer cars automatically turn on the fog lights when turning on the low beams? I see a lot of drivers using their fog lights when it’s perfect weather conditions at night. Why do people do this?

    • @AdvanceDrivingSchool
      @AdvanceDrivingSchool  4 года назад

      No car turns on both fog lamps automatically with the dipped headlamps, but many cars use the fog lamps individually as cornering lights. Who know why drivers put them on - but to be honest we don’t find them very dazzling so let them get on with it.

    • @Ppetsku96

      I think Hunter G may be confusing the high beam with fog lights. I cannot recall having seen anyone using their fog lights ever. I bet 80% of the drivers don't even know what fog lights are. It's like a similar topic to 'how many cm may your cargo stick out of the trunk before you have to hang a red flag on it', which nobody ever does, so nobody knows it.

    8:38 "there are no rules in the highway code stating when we must use our indicators" ?? I think any country in the world has rules for this. In NL / BE / AUS / USA at least you can get fined if you fail to indicate. I cannot imagine that in the UK this will be different.

    5:40 6:06 Why are back fog lights only on one side of the car?

      We’re not sure why this is, but most new cars are like this!

      I'm guessing if they were on both sides, people may be thinking you're riding the brake all the time

    7:13 "Just in case" makes it sound like as if everyone has to jump away when you put your car into reverse gear, which is obviously not true. Primarily the driver has to pay attention and stop if anyone is in your way, the lights are the "just in case".

    Unfortunately a lot of drivers use fog lights at night dazzling other users of the road. I am suprised police won't do anything about it.

    All the lights are used to make ourselves more visible to other road users.

    I’m already going to be in an accident driving on wrong side as the UK we aren’t used to drive on that side in US 🤦🏽‍♂️

      It's not hard to switch over - whenever I've driven in the US or Europe it only takes an hour or so to get used to it 👍🏼

    • @Engineer9736
      @Engineer9736 2 года назад

      I've traveled through Australia for about 8 months, spread over 3 visits, while i'm from Europe. As soon as you start driving in a left-side driving country, everything will go automatically. All the infrastructure shows that you're supposed to drive on the left so you rarely have to think about where to go ☺. Also in any country, either left or right side driving, the steering wheel is supposed to be at the center of the road. So as soon as you're sitting right next to the outer side of the road you know things are not going good 😅. If there is traffic around it will be obvious where to go and where not, if there is no traffic around and you notice you're sitting right next to the outside of the road, turn around immediately.

    Is that the correct usage of the warning lights?
    **Rule 116**
    > Hazard warning lights. These may be used when your vehicle is stationary, to warn that it is temporarily obstructing traffic. Never use them as an excuse for dangerous or illegal parking. You MUST NOT use hazard warning lights while driving or being towed unless you are on a motorway or unrestricted dual carriageway and you need to warn drivers behind you of a hazard or obstruction ahead. Only use them for long enough to ensure that your warning has been observed.
