Cuddling with our precious yellow -sided GCC is the highlight of our days! ♥️ Skittles always gets in either my husbands shirt or my shirt or nightgown when we get in the bed at night. It's the sweetest, most precious part of our day. She continues to cuddle with us until we get sleepy and put her up for the night. ❤
He has always had a way with animals, especially birds. He had an elderly cockatiel that some friends gave us, but he died after a yr and my son was devastated. He’s now 20 living on his own and the rental company now allows tenants to have birds so he got a young (6-7 months) green cheeked conure. He has done a lot of research and also the store where he bought the bird have been very supportive and done a great job of informing him of how to care for this bird. The problem he’s having is the bird just wants to stay in his cage by his heater. He had his cage next to floor to ceiling windows so I told him he needed to move his cage to a warmer place and keep his apartment warmer. Question is, how warm should their environment be?
Thank you so much for this video- exactly what I needed to know. My GCC is 9 months old now and VERY cuddly. Since she was a baby I’ve been cuddling her with my hand wrapped over her back, fingertips on head. She loves it but has started to show some minor signs of hormonal behavior. I’ll try to keep our cuddling more to the side!
Hey Loren, glad it was useful! They can be very cuddly little birds. Olive (one of our rescues) constantly wants to be fully enclosed, but we always avoid it as it always leads to hormonal behaviour from her. Petting around the head/neck, cuddling to the side etc are all good though!
Unfortunately, I've created a VERY bonded needy boy with my Benny. GCC he's 1.5yo! He LOOOOOOVES me. How can I slowly descrease the closeness without him going insane? He's very smart and learns quickly! He loves the hand around over the back - he leans riiiiiight in! and i rub his neck from that position. LOVE YOUR VIDS
You could try offering him cuddles from the side instead and also just offering other activities so cuddling isn’t the main focus of outings! Conures when bonded can be exceptionally cuddly and to an extent it’s totally fine to give them some, especially if they are solo birds!
Mostly when they end up behaving hormonal! Many things can trigger it off! But seasonally it is usually Autumn or Spring. I say either because some conures natural instincts will kick in when it's summer in their native South America. While others will respond to local seasonal changes!
I know I already have commented but, I know this video was specific about conures but I Knew this also apply on other parrots. Anyway one of my goals this year is to deepen my emotional bond with Chako (I had him since I was born because he was my dad’s and just not very long ago I realized we all were believing African Greys are a one person bird so mot of my life everyone but my dad were very very distant from him. Unfortunately the rest of the family still is more distant and are not very interested in deepening their bond with him. I find that even though I am so invested, there’s a lot of room to grow even deeper relationship and trust) Trying out some of this techniques and it really seems to go well, I think I stopped offering cuddle time not very long after I just got to rescue him from the previous setting he were in before my dad passed, I didn’t know how to manage hormones so he ended up very aggressive and hormonal when cuddling at the time. This days however my hormone management skills are better, and a lot like you I really do believe social animals need kind physical contact with their flock, I know humans need it and when humans lack of it it shows through health and emotional wellbeing, why birds won’t? I always sticked to just scritches on his had, was happy to discover he can get content when cuddled from the side, that was much fun gonna try incorporating offerings cuddles more into our daily.
My pineapple morph will lean over into my cupped hand if I put it near him. He basically likes being cradled. Is that questionable? It’s pretty much just a more enclosed side cuddle
It's not unusual at all! I think the best thing to say is provided it's to the side and it's not stimulating hormonal behaviour it's ok even if it is a little more enclosed!
@@TheParrotTeacher okay, thanks. He’s def super cuddly, but still a bit nippy, too. He’s about 9 months old now, so I’m not sure how much to expect him to stop biting. I can get him to stop, but usually does it again a few minutes later. His favorite places are either against my neck, under my beard, or in the cup of my hand
I’ve seen people talk about tapping his beak, saying “no”, and then walking away for a few minutes when he bites. Unfortunately, he’s on me like 50% of the time, and that’s not practical, cuz I’d have to force him off. I may have to try to work on the soft targeting stuff
@@greatshot.productions We aren't fans of the tapping or saying no stuff. It often makes it worse. The good bit of the advise is walking away for a little while then resuming interactions. The soft targeting is often the best place to start as it teaches birds to interact softly. It just takes more time!
Cockatiel's tend to be less into it. They can be really keen on scritches and being petted, but any I've had/others I've spoken to/about dislike physical cuddling unless exceptionally hormonal. Thank you! It's an awesome show!
Please can someone tell me why my 3 months old conure always sleeping? He don’t play, he don’t do anything, he keeps screaming and jumping in his cage to get him out, and when I hold him, he directly jump into my kneck and sleep🤷🏽♀️.. is that normal? Or something is wrong with him?
He wants to cuddle upto you as you are his flock! He likely doesn’t do much else as he hasn’t been taught to play with toys or doesn’t have anything fun to do! If you’re worried you could get him a. Check up with an avian vet too!
I’m confused, my conure loves when I say I’m gonna get you and I poke my finger at her and she lifts her foot up, she sleeps in my neck and lays on her back to have me tickle her feet… I didn’t know there was a wrong or bad way to love and play with a conure? Is this all conures?
Hey Crystal, If you're playing with her and it's not hormonal then it's ok! For example Pickles likes to grab my finger if I touch her foot sometimes. Sleeping by the side of your neck is also ok, many of our conures do so! Also laying on the back is kinda a grey area. Many conures will go on their back to play with flockmates/mates so provided she isn't getting "over excited" it's fine to play like that! The problems come from: enclosing a conure fully or putting excessive pressure on the back (like a mate would). Repetitive motion along the back (like petting a cat), tickling under the wings repeatedly or touching "other places!" Many people see their conures react to this and assume it's pleasure, but in reality it's often hormonal behaviour or frustration. This leads to problems such as egg laying (without mating), biting, screaming and over attatchment. I hope this makes sense!
Hey Rob, Shredding is fairly normal parrot behaviour! They love shredding/destroying things and with toys it should be encouraged! BUT, if he is in a corner, shredding and thrusting that's different!
@@TheParrotTeacher He's a funny bird. Gets his head under my chin then reaches up with a claw and grabs my chin. When I lie down, he puts his head down and charges across by body at my face, I think that's a romantic thing, he fluffs up also and allows some scritching.
Hi David, are you able to tell me what this sound means? How can I send the video? George does it only when he is out of his cage, either on the curtain pole or when sitting on our legs!
Thx, I did Read a bit Online... Especially the one I am getting is known as Blue Throated, says they are very laid back & chill? So I guess It'll go fine.
I think that might be a in our human nature to feel the need nurture them little frightened thing in a cuddly way, isn’t it? I want to see what David’s answer is, that is an interesting question!
Hey Hazel, It is definitely an interesting question. That would qualify as a special situation. If it's not done constantly then it'll mostly be ok. BUT it would be better to offer the same comfort just from the side or to do some extra desense work to help your conure react less. Olive is a perfect example in two cases. When she was unwell we allowed her to cuddle right into a small towel, including over the top. This helped her feel warm and secure. During this time we decided it would be ok as it was a special circumstance. Olive also had a scare when the window cleaner came today. She flew all around the house and exhausted herself from fear. I picked her up and supported her side until she calmed down rather than wrapping or enclosing her.

Depending on the species and their age etc you generally want to keep things at a decent temperature for them and avoid any direct drafts!
