Growing a beard is not a trend.
    It is a life style!

Exactly! We all naturally have facial hair, taking time to remove it daily is a trend.

Beautiful explanation, Dan, it totally makes sense! I noticed many of my coworkers are rocking the 5 o’clock shadow, many dread putting the razor to their face because of the irritation, it’s just not a natural process. Many of my customers, and a few of my coworkers rock a full beard as well. I also believe that beards will continue to become more prevalent in our modern age.

Have to admit I never really thought about this, but you are 100% correct! Beards are all natural. Left alone my face grows a beard! It’s only when it’s shaved is my natural appearance altered. Therefore shaving is without question the trend! Since I don’t really know would like to see you dedicate a video to when and why men began to shave their beards. You truly are the trusted teacher Dan!!

I can only remember being around "shaving" when working for the Department of Corrections.
In 2009, when I started, it was a mandatory requirement for employment to shave your face EVERYDAY.
You could however have a clean well maintained mustache.
They did this for two reasons. 1. They ran a military structured system and 2 since working with munitions like C.S. gas for crowd/riot control, having a shaved face assured a proper seal for GAS masks. (Diffrent then oxygen supply masks)
Since about 2019 they have allowed officers to grow a 1" beard length maximum.
From what I was told, they chose 1" because it if in the event one needed to wear a gas mask it still gives the possibility for a seal of a gas mask, and a 1" beard was easier to maintain and allow ones who arent fans of grooming to maintain a cleaner look.
If you look into why the military shaves their beard this is for the same reasons. Ouside of that, it was also kind of like everyone wearing the same outfit in school an represented unity.
Outside of law enforcement and the military, shaving isnt common or atleast what I've been around.
I feel the only reasonsoneone would think beards are the trend is because of Duck Dynasty. This was only because they were on the tv screens of people who have never been to the south where beards are just as common it was just on tv and merchandise for sale showed men with beards and not shaved faces.
I feel if Duck Dynasty was men with no beards we would see ZERO change in who shaved their face. But since the length of the beards and lifstyle was only seen by those that lived it, the show I believe it only pushed more people to do what has always been common, just never used as a sales tactic.
Now that the beard itself is getting used more in commercials, proffessons and seen as a "style" rather than what has always been.
Beards are much more than a trend. They are significant for protection of sun, weather and other elements. They are a religous observances for many religons, and symbolize diffrent things in cultures around the world. Trends go away. For the beard to go away everything from religon to culture itself wouldnt exsist. For this to happen humans themselves would be non existent.
Awesome video, Dan. I havnt had many conversations about this but it has sadly become a logical fallacy.

I think a better lens to view this through is to discuss the trends around how facial hair is worn. That does change over time and is often dictated by fashion and various social “norms”. Probably a better question is whether the trend toward bigger beards will continue.

Great episode, Dan. I believe that growing beards is really natural, however businesses like Harry's and Gillette create the need to shave, and always create new gadgets to update and make for new needs and advertising. As long as they want to see, they will find a way to make a trend. I loathe the idea of shaving, but realize money is what makes the world go around, and they want to sell. There are other competing companies with beard products, and they also like to sell, so where would I rather spend my money. It sure isn't with scraping my face every day. Like you, I will keep on growing. I can't be Santa any other way.

I have enjoyed my current beard journey so much, it's hard to imagine going back to shaving again. Once I got into wet shaving, it improved my enjoyment of the process tremendously. Fascinating! You noted sharpened shells or rock shards. Some test knife sharpening by shaving. We went from straight razors to Electric Shavers. Chemical depilatories were also used. But that’s just technology. As you said, beards themselves are not a trend, although some styles could be. Some men believe a beard reflects their spiritual state and will never cut, although they might groom it or care for it. Sometimes events or circumstances change trends, or attitudes change (Good Manners, Proper Etiquette, Standard English for example). I used to hear “a man with a beard is hiding something”, and the Sales dicta to never give prospects a chance to take offense; so no facial hair, visible tattoos, etc. The channels “Real Men Real Style” and “Gentleman’s Gazette” show how and why men’s clothing changes. Unless some force with more power than Alexander the Great arises to enforce beardlessness for all men under all circumstances, beards will always be on display.

My mothers side of the family were trappers, hunters, fishermen, share croppers for many many years living off the land. My older uncles and pawpaw always had wonderful beards year around. I always thought of it that it was just because of their rugged hardworking lifestyles. A while back as i started growing mine i did it to follow my hunting and trapping family mentors footsteps. But until recently i ran across very old photos of grt and grt uncles and grt grt grandparents who ALL HAD BEARDS. Some were even elected officials. One a sheriff, one a mayor, one a banker, and one a judge. Lol, so i have a whole new outlook on it now. It is part of my heritage. I am bearded by blood. It is who I am, my legacy, and bearded for life will i be.

I honestly think I’ve always wanted to grow a beard since I was a child. My dad had and still has a long goatee and growing up watching Harry Potter and characters like dumbledore and hagrid having beards just made me like them. Only time I ever shaved with a razor was in high school when I only had little patches of hair randomly on my face. My trend seems to be growing my beard for 6-9 months and then buzzing it down to stubble. Can’t seem to make it past the 9 month mark but I’m really trying this time. I’m at 7 months now. 🎉

I think it’s more about what time period we are talking about. There was a time in the mid 1800s or so that to get a shave, you had to go to a barber to get a straight razor shave. Also it was for people that had money. Before that all men had beards. In the early 1900’s the safety razor was invented and men could shave themselves without having to pay a barber. As time went on safety razors improved and eventually in 1971 the first cartridge razor was
introduced and the rest is history. Yes beards are natural but so is hair and fingernails for
example. We cut our hair and trim our beards and nails. If shaving is a trend what about trimming or grooming our beards? Shaving may be considered a trend in the early 1900’s. Just a perspective.

Hello Dan, first of all what a tremendous video, the reflection I have is that for some reason man was created with facial hair, that means it's natural and not a trend, on the other hand you have these big companies like Gillette etc. promoting their shaving products for years creating this concept that men have to shave to look clean, When everything is a business strategy. I believe that we are in a new era where we are recovering something that was lost over the years, which is men facial hair.Thank you Dan for this amazing video amd have a wonderful day

Fellow History buff! Trends in fashion are generational and hair(head, facial, and body) is part of that. In my lifetime, I was born during hippy hair which gave way to disco and mustaches and close beards. In 80's Punk, metal and pop were clean shaven. At the same time, there was ZZ Top. After college in 90's, the career path can impact facial hair, but I knew people who had beards and had the shaving trend start to include head hair in the workplace I was in be accepted. Millennials started spa trends including male ascetic treatments like facials and premium men's shaving products.(Art of Shaving is an example). We are now on the current Facial hair trends which still include examples of both but long beards are more accepted again. Beards have never gone away, length and style may change. This is only my personal perspective as an American. Look at other religious and cultural influences around the world and beards will always be present.

I see both growing a beard and being clean shaven as choices men make to enhance their appearance. There are also medical reasons too as to why someone has chosen to be clean shaven or grow a beard. Shaving every morning or night is time consuming, plus razors cost a lot of money. I've actually met guys who grow out their facial hair, due to the fact that razor blades are so expensive. A person's faith is another reason too. The cool thing is that you have a lot more razor options to shave with now, just like how bearded guys like us have a lot of options to help us groom our beards 😀.

There has always been trends, and there has always been people swimming against the current. Besides, i don't deem rocking a beard some kind of trend. Ever since i was in my early twenties i always had some kind of beard. First a soulpatch, which is probably the oldest part of my beard by now - then a goatee and after a few more years i went for a short but full beard. And now here i am, 2 month aftter lighting struck me and i said "Hey, lets see what this beard of yours can do if you go the full mile - letting it grow while giving it all the proper care it needs". And boy, i have rarely been more invested into something like this. So, na - no trend. I feel more like those dead serious gardeners, carefully pruning even the smallest flower to help it grow into something beautiful.

In modern times WW1 brought on the trend of shaving, then after WW2 when the popularity of shaving was at full swing, post WW2 growing beads became popular with those who came home from the war disgruntled by the war and some joined outsiders social groups like biker groups, thus in the part of society that supported the “system” looked at beards as a black sheep thing.
It seems any time there’s a war that happens. But in the last 40 years things have been slowly changing, doctors, lawyers and public officials now have beards, it’s not a outsider thing anymore

I've been through at least three "the beard trend is over" obsessions in my life. And!.... although this may create a heated debate, facial hair in general in history. Not that I think anything of the man at all, but Hitler had the infamous mustache because his trendy at the time bushy handlebar stache caused him to get mustard gassed in the trenches of WW1. That's why he never used gas in WW2. Strange to think how facial hair potentially played a roll In global conflict. Sorry if I'm on a tangent my friend. I hear facial hair AND history!? I'm ready to discuss. To everyone reading this..... I love you all!

There are a combination of historical factors here that play major roles in an artificially weighted opinion on shaving in the last century. The easier factor to discuss would be companies like Gillette pedalling this idea of "clean shaven," pretty self-explanatory and business interest driven. The other part that is more complicated is the draft and multiple world wars, especially WWII. Nearly the entire male population gets drafted into these wars over two generations. By WWII chemical warfare is a major concern. Gas masks have become a common thing, and that's kind of the ball game. The men come back from years of service, and shaving. Gillette continues to innovate the razor experience, lowering the bar on shaving technique and skillfulness. And now you have a majority of men who are uninterested in beards and consider them "dirty" because of military experience and marketing. As we move away from the drafted generation, and the generations who were parented by those generations, we start to see more of the balanced opinions on beards emerge again. It helps that information is easy to access in the Internet age and you can't propagandize the clean shaven idea anymore.

I kind of enjoyed it more when having a big beard made me stand out. 10 years ago I would be the only one bearded out of a room of ten random men. Back then, I could proudly and confidently say I had the best beard in the room... Now, it seems like 9/10 guys have beards, and they are usually better and bigger than mine!

  • @tbneddy9216

This discussion does well to point out the distinction between determing "trends " in an immediate generational context versus identifying trends in the grand scheme of history. Men were created with beards, this is indeed the natural norm. The interspersed eras of shaving, whether by the Egyptians who worshipped androgyny, the pagan priests of Phoenicia, the armies of Alexander the Great, the fashion of certain Roman Emperors, the beard tax in 17th Century Russia under Tsar Peter I, and the general Louis XIV inspired era of powdered wigs lasting through the 18th Century in Europe and colonial America, have always been periodical outliers when viewed in the broader context of mankind's history as a whole. I can understand why some would consider beards to be a "trend" when defined in the immediate generational context, as throughout the larger portion of the 20th century, beards were not commonplace. Nonetheless, Dan's observation remains true and is irrefutable in view of history's comprehensive chronology. Beards, with the exception of some genetic deficiencies, are and have been the naturally occuring outgrowth of biological processes. Styles may change in favorability, and any man is welcome to the option of shaving. But it is shaving trends which have interrupted the flow of the historical norm and I believe that the more men embrace the natural physical features of masculinity, it can make a positive impact in forging confidence, community, and commitment.

I see beards as a trend mostly when it comes to the type, or style. For example it seems like the stubble look is a trend now. A hundred years ago maybe it was mutton chops. Men have always had beards, and always will. All I know is I'm done with the real long beard. 5 to 6" is where I'm staying from now on. Easier to keep looking neat, no forking, and no see through at the bottom. Still a fairly long beard.
