  • Time for another pick from our patrons over on Patreon. This week we're covering alternative rock pioneers, Pixies! They're no stranger to the channel, having won Album of the Year honors from Jason twice (89/90) as well as multiple nominations from Kramzer (88/89). How will that translate when compared to the rest of their catalog? Time to find out!
    ****
The Pixies are an American alternative rock band formed in 1986 in Boston, Massachusetts. Until 2013, the band comprised Black Francis (vocals, rhythm guitar, songwriter), Joey Santiago (lead guitar), Kim Deal (bass, backing vocals) and David Lovering (drums). The band disbanded acrimoniously in 1993 but reunited in 2004. After Deal left in 2013, the Pixies hired Kim Shattuck as a touring bassist; she was replaced that year by Paz Lenchantin, who became a permanent member in 2016.
The Pixies are associated with the 1990s alternative rock boom, and draw on elements including punk rock and surf rock. Their music is known for its dynamic "loud-quiet-loud" shifts and song structures. Francis is the Pixies' primary songwriter; his often surreal lyrics cover offbeat subjects such as extraterrestrials, incest, and biblical violence. They achieved modest popularity in the US but were more successful in Europe. Their jarring pop sound influenced acts such as Nirvana, Radiohead, the Smashing Pumpkins, and Weezer. Their popularity grew in the years after their breakup, leading to a 2004 reunion and sold-out world tours, and three further albums: Indie Cindy (2014), Head Carrier (2016) and Beneath the Eyrie (2019).

One of the most original, influential and compelling bands ever.
Their first efforts are master works.
Their soft loud dynamics were heavily imitated. Frank Black's lyrics and 4AD artwork were so bizarrely attractive.
Kim Deal contributed a lot to Black Francis genius, that ego clash was a shame.
    Long live The Pixies!

I'm a pretty big fan of the Pixies original run and have been for a long time. I even got to see them live in 2011 when Kim Deal was still in the band and they performed the entire Doolittle album. It was pretty amazing! For whatever reason I had never explored the reunion albums until I was getting ready to make my list this episode. While I don't love any of those albums as much as my top ones they are all still pretty solid. I enjoyed hearing them this week and revisiting all my old favourites.
    7. Indie Cindy 3 (6.5) - couldn't quite connect with this one the same as other people for whatever reason, maybe it needs more listens?
    6. Beneath the Eyrie 3.5 (6.9)
    5. Head Carrier 3.5 (7.3)
    4. Trompe Le Monde 4 (8.4)

I saw Pixies in 1991 in Madrid with Killing Joke opening. I absolutely loved it. I bought a t-shirt that I maniacally wore until it literally desintegrated.
I knew one of my best friends because of that shirt. He was also wearing a Pixies t-shirt. For several years I was Fran Pixies to him and I referred to him as Juan Pixies.

Come On Pilgrim (though culled together from demos) is their debut. It's a fully formed statement by a band. Really shouldn't be left off here. Black Francis' horrific tales obsessed with sex, death, and religion at first sound like ramblings that could only come from a woefully tormented madman, but really they're just pulled straight from the Bible. A horrific book indeed. His sense of humor is on display at times as well. Not enough love for Joey Santiago in this video. One of the greatest guitarists of the late 80s/early 90s.
    1. Doolittle (5 stars. Perfect album.)

    3. Come On Pilgrim (4.5 stars)
    4. Bossanova (4 stars)
    5. Trompe Le Monde (4 stars)
I'm a bigger fan of their first three releases than I am a devotee to the band themselves. So, I've never even listened to anything after Trompe le Monde. I don't even care to. Just not interested. Has nothing to do with reviews either. For example, I was barely even aware of Indie Cindy when it was released. I didn't even know Head Carrier existed until you guys mentioned you were doing a discography ranking.

    4.0 Bossanova (1990)
    3.5 Trompe Le Monde (1991)
    3.0 Indie Cindy (2014)
    2.5 Head Carrier (2016)
    3.0 Beneath The Eyrie (2019)
Pixies weren't the first band to emphasize quiet/loud dynamics but they deserve credit for making it fashionable through the late'80s & '90s. I love the first half of their debut, Surfer Rosa, but I've never been a big fan of the second half of that album. As a listening experience I slightly prefer the Come On Pilgrim EP, which I didn't feel was long enough to be included on a list of LPs (it would probably get 4.5 stars from me.) The consensus pick for their best album, 1989's Doolittle, is the correct one. I'm not in love with every last track on that album, but most of them are amazing. Their next 2 efforts (Bossanova & Trompe le Monde) are slightly less quirky affairs. They mark a period of tension within the band when there was less collaboration happening. Nevertheless, those albums contain quite a few memorable songs. Their first comeback album, Indie Cindy, is not the disaster some make it out to be, but I still can't say a majority of it is worth revisiting. (The use of autotuned vocals on some tracks doesn't help that album's reputation.) 2016's Head Carrier is about as 'meh' as albums get. Their last release, Beneath the Eyrie, constitutes a small improvement but still doesn't quite reach the level of their first 4 albums. I love the Pixies, they're an important band in the history of alternative rock. That said, I don't think they'll make my personal "top 100 artists" list. Almost all their LPs have some amount of filler on them. Also- while I do appreciate the brevity of writing short, "to the point" songs- at times it leaves me wishing they'd fleshed out their ideas a little more.
    MY RATING SYSTEM:
5.0 = major classic (consistently great *and* stratospheric highs)
4.5 = minor classic (consistently great *or* stratospheric highs, but not both)
4.0 = great (more than 50% is worth revisiting and it's an essential record for this artist/style - passes my "it'll make a fan out of someone who's new to this artist" test)
3.5 = seriously good (at least 50% is worth revisiting)
3.0 = nominally good (less than 50% is worth revisiting)
2.5 = decent (competent but uninspired - not worth revisiting)
    2.0 = poor (difficult listen)
    1.5 = awful (can't finish it)
1.0 = historically awful (musical apocalypse)
*Note: "Consistently" does not mean "flawlessly." I allow for a few clunkers if the rest of the songs are good enough. Also, I don't go below 1 star because once I'm in the realm of the truly terrible I don't care to differentiate anymore.

I discovered the pixies when I was probably 13-14. I had just started getting into more alternative music, first with bands like R.E.M. and the Cure, so I'd stay up and watch 120 Minutes on MTV on the weekends, which for the younger crowd was a show on MTV that played videos by alternative or "college rock" (as it was called in the day) bands. One night I caught the video for "Here Comes Your Man" and I was instantly hooked. Doolittle's been among my favorite all time albums since, and the rest of their catalog isn't so bad either.

    1. Doolittle - Simply one of the most perfect albums recorded to tape. There's not a dull moment on this album. It's up there with all your favorite classics from the 60s and 70s. It's a strong contender for my favorite album of all time.
    2. Surfer Rosa - A very close second to Doolittle. One of the all time great debut albums though. I think the Pixies were able to make an album that sounded completely fresh, but doesn't sound dated 35 years later.
    *4.5 Stars*
    3. Bossanova - More polished than it's predecessors. Great, but dips a little bit in the second half. First half is great though.
    *4 Stars*
    4. Trompe le Monde - Easily the weakest of their original run. It sounds closer to Frank Black's first solo album than the rest of the Pixies output. Also employs a notably heavier sound. Feels like a transitional album.
    *3.5 Stars*
    5. Beneath the Eyrie - I think this is the strongest of the reunion albums and has a different vibe than the other two. It feels like they figured out how to play to their strengths as an aging band.
    6. Head Carrier - I like this a little more than Indy Cindy, and I think it's due in part to the addition of Paz Lenchantin. Her harmony vocals are great and this album brings back some of the magic of classic Pixies.
    *3 Stars*
    7. Indy Cindy - Much like the Stooges' The Weirdness, it feels like the band is trying to find their place after being absent for a long time. It feels like Frank Black is trying to make a "Pixies" album rather than just writing the types of songs he was writing for his solo albums (which were often fantastic).

Trompe Le Monde is the album for me. The guitars are unrelenting and beautiful. The songs are so solid and memorable. The vocals are great and the lyrics are interesting. I love the alien themes throughout. It has an overall solidity that I think the other albums lack a bit. Every song is a hit.
Not to say that the other albums are bad by any measure. Doolittle is right there, but just a bit less interesting. And I always hated "Silver", whereas Tromp Le Monde, IMO, has no bad songs. I'd rank the albums as follows:

It’s been a while since I’ve been back to Cape Cod, where I went to high school (and where Charles Thompson aka Black Francis aka Frank Black is from), but there used to be a dive bar in Hyannis called the Quarterdeck that was owned by Charles’ uncle (or maybe cousin), and the coolest thing about it was the juke box. At least a quarter of the songs on it were Pixies or Frank Black solo songs.

Can't remember what year I saw the Pixies, but it was in a small club called The Chance in Poughkeepsie, so it must have been before Doolittle. I don't listen to them much anymore, but I've been dipping back in lately and enjoying it. Sometimes it's a good idea to forgo some artists for a few years, then they sound so much fresher when you get back to it. I've only given the reunion albums a cursory listen, so I'm not gonna list them. Maybe I'll reevaluate later.
    1. Surfer Rosa. Love every second, every goof, every word. Don't find any of it abrasive or dissonant, especially compared to some the the music I have gotten into since then.
    2. Come On Pilgrim. My cd version has both Surfer Rosa and Come On Pilgrim, so I sorta think of them as one album. I've Been Tired was always an instant sing along with my friends.
    3. Doolittle. Such a classic, maybe a bit overplayed, which is why I don't listen to it as often. Still dynamite, though.
    4. Trompe le Monde. Wasn't a fan upon first release, but grew to really like it.
    5. Bossanova. Fun LP, though a little thin.
They have a bunch of great b-sides and covers that might make my best song list. They also do a couple of great Neil Young covers, which underlines Neil's influence shown in songs like Silver.
Funny little irony: Didn't know TLM was doing the Pixies this week. When I checked YT ,and saw the new TLM video, I happened to be blasting The Muffs. Whoop Dee Doo, indeed.

It's interesting to hear your retrospective view to someone in their mid-twenties who experienced an epiphany moment when Surfer Rosa came out. So, for me, their emergence signalled the resurgence of indie rock as they took over the mantle previously held by The Smiths. I agree with Kramzer that splitting Surfer Rosa and Doolittle is tough. Jason's comments here are persuasive that Doolittle has a better sound and probably track for track is a better album. As a UK listener, hair metal/hard rock of the 80s has always been a bit of a joke to us (This is Spinal Tap said it all really) and indie rock is king. So, I can't take Joe's comments that seriously. I can see how annoying some of the back end of Surfer Rosa can seem but, it's the humour and eccentric personality of the record which shines through as endearing even when the objective quality drops whereas hair metal/hard rock, perhaps as a hangover from the prog rock era of the 70s always took itself too seriously.
But I still have Surfer Rosa as their best for their sheer raw explosion of their sound, the swagger, the aggression, the playfulness, the sheer joy of discovery that characterises the best rock music in its prime.
Bossanova and Trompe le Monde are still solid but lesser efforts for me. They feel like they are retreading old ground more than being fresh and innovative though there are some great tracks - Planet of Sound is one of their most epic sounding tracks. As a lot of bands, their peak only lasted a few years but they are a seminal and essential band for the post-punk impact they had and the dizzying heights of sheer quality they achieved for a brief, but magical period.

Pixies were a good and interesting band even if grotesquely hyped by their generation.
I cannot explain it but Pixies always stayed distant for me - a band for the brain rather than the heart. They had many good songs but although all their albums were not too long, they all felt like too long after a while. I think it is the dead, sterile, mechanical production that keeps them as something to observe rather than to experience (I never sang along to their records or played my air guitar like I normally would do with music like this.) Surfer Rosa ranks among those albums that are widely overrated due to their influence etc. (The Come On Pilgrim EP makes a far clearer statement.) Their final album is pretty good but understandable that Pixies enthusiasts ignored it as it had little to do with the original band.

    notes:
    * A friend introduced me to Doolittle which he had on tape not long after it came out. We were in France at the time. I didn't get it at first but it quickly grew on me and I soon considered it totally awesome. By the time I was at college a year or two later The Pixies were already legendary to those in the know.
    * Pixies music sounds like it was made by insane people which makes it so cool.
    * The energy on Surfer Rosa and Doolittle is strange and infectious. Bossanova quite often dials down that energy but the songs are still mostly great. Although "Rock Music" is one of their heaviest songs. Not too crazy about "Allison" though.
    * Trompe le Monde might be their weirdest album (and that's saying something). Some of the songs transform in interesting ways. They are placed very close together which is jarring in an exciting way. "Planet of Sound" is ferocious and there's some killer guitar on "Letter to Memphis." However, "Lovely Day" sounds like a retread of their "Head On" cover. Had they removed what I consider to be the weak songs - "Bird Dream of the Olympus Mons," "Distance Equals Rate Times Time," "Lovely Day," and "The Navajo Know" - they would have had a tight little 11-song, 4.5-star album.
    * Indie Cindy is a very good comeback album. Only "Bagboy" ranks with past glories though. It shouldn't be too surprising they are doing more mellow songs after all these years, which is fine. They also channel their youthful energy to reasonably good effect, such as on the "U-Mass" flashback "Blue Eyed Hexe."
    * Head Carrier is unfortunately a weak follow up. They've always been good at short, punchy songs, but some of these songs just feel slight. Some start off well but have lame choruses. "Baal's Back" is a particularly bad one, a rather anti-melodic song which gets my vote for lamest guitar solo ever. Paz Lenchantin can't quite fit Kim Deal's shoes either, but she sounds and fits in better on the next album which has a rather different sound.
    * I saw the Pixies live about 11 years or so ago before Kim left. It was a blast! They are an ideal band for seeing live because you just can't help getting swept up and cutting loose when they are playing.
    * Cheers mates!!!!!!!!!!

I'd give their compilation "Death To The Pixes" 5 stars. Not say I could do that with any of their studio album releases.

I can see where you're coming from. Doolittle has about 4 songs I just plain don't care for, but since it's a 15 song album (instead of the typical 10 to 12 songs) it still (barely) gets to 5 stars for me. I've been trying to get away from requiring 5 star albums to be "perfect albums." If I would revisit 75-80% of an album and I think it contains stratospheric highs (at least 2 "guaranteed to be remembered" type songs) then I'll give it 5 stars. Heck, there are 5 star Beatles albums that have multiple skippable tracks.

Great observations about Bossanova, Jason! It really DOES evoke the UFO-culture of the 50s, and the off-kilter, spooky ether that hovered over that decade. It's part of the reason I love Bossanova so much, and it retains great personal significance for me because it was my official introduction to The Pixies music, even though, objectively, I feel Doolittle is still their best album, from start to finish.

I've seen them 4 times including the Doolittle tour in 1989. All the shows were great but that first one was incredible (back when there was no gap between the stage and the crowd). My ranking would be: Doolittle / Surfer Rosa / Bossanova / Trompe Le Monde / Indy Cindy / Beneath The Eyrie / Head Carrier. Surfer Rosa is an album that grows on you. The weird songs get better over time. Joe give it a chance. I like all their albums and still listen to all of them. Would love to see you guys rank Husker Du albums next.

My ranking (I will edit when Doggerel comes out):
    8. Beneath the Eyrie - Not a terrible album, but not a great one either. 5/10
    7. Indie Cindy - Disappointing comeback album. 5/10
    6. Head Carrier - Has a couple of good songs, like the title track and "Oona", but I don't think this album is great. 6/10
    5. Trompe le Monde - Great album. The ending of "Alec Eiffel" is one of the catchiest things the Pixies have ever done. 9/10
    4. Doolittle - That's how good the Pixies are. Doolittle is at #4. "Debaser" and "Monkey Gone to Heaven" are two of my favorite Pixies songs, with "Debaser" being my favorite. 10/10
    3. Surfer Rosa - I love the raw sound on this album, and I just love how atmospheric and depressing it is. To me, at least. 10/10
    2. Bossanova - In some ways, this is the perfect summer album. Every song is a classic, especially "Cecilia Ann", "Velouria" and "Dig For Fire". Love the sound on this album, it's a 10/10.
    1. Come On Pilgrim - It might not count since it's an EP, but this is in my top 10 favorite albums of all time. Every song is a masterpiece. 10/10

I'm not a super fan anymore, but when I was around 17-18 got into indie rock/alternative stuff after only listening to punk and hardcore Pixies was the ultimate stepping stone for me. I first discovered their more agressive songs like The Sad Punk, but then I heard Here Comes Your Man, and after buying Doolittle I slowly started to listen more and more to indie rock and less to hardcore, and from there my music taste kept evolving. So Pixies were and are very important in shaping my taste in music.

Writing as I watch the intro so don't know how your rankings will compare to mine yet, but...
Huge band for me growing up in the early '90s. I was at a party early '92, 16 years old in a London suburb, feeling like a brand new cool kid and someone put on a compilation tape of stuff from John Peel. River Euphrates came on and I was utterly transfixed. It was so unique, visceral, melodic. Quickly sought out their albums on cassette (timestamp) and they were galvanized into my personal canon forevermore.
Not a huge fan of reunion albums; they're well made, enjoyable alt rock for the most part, but lack the pure magic of '87-'91. Kinda wished you had chosen to include Come On Pilgrim, although common parlance has it as an EP, with 8 songs I've always regarded it as a short album.
    Anyway mine goes
    8. Head Carrier 3.0
    7. Beneath the Eyre 3.5
    6. Indie Cindy 3.5
    5. Come On Pilgrim 4.0

I’m with Joe. I’d actually put Surfer Rosa tied for 3rd after Trompe & Doolittle. After they broke up in the early 90s, I started to appreciate the writing more and started finding myself listening to the other albums more. Tbh, I don’t even go back to Surfer Rosa, maybe because all the overhype and usage in commercials and movies with “Where is my mind” and “Gigantic”.
I don’t like Albini’s recording on Surfer Rosa or his recording of TWEEZ and Fugazi’s “In on the kill taker”, which ended up getting re-recorded with their previous producer. He’s the first to admit he did a bad job on Slint’s album as well as Fugazi’s album. If you really want a good example of an Albini-recorded album, look at Jesus Lizard’s LIAR or Don Caballero’s “American Don”. Those are great Albini-recorded albums. Surfer Rosa was not. Gil Norton was the perfect producer for The Pixies.

Hi Everyone . . The "you shoulda ranked Come On Pilgrim" comments are just like the "you shoulda ranked Snap!" comments on The Jam video . . . I think the point here (and one of the Boys can correct me if I am wrong) is to rank studio albums with other studio albums. Apples to apples. An EP is not a studio album as we generally accept the term. Neither is a compilation. Of course everyone here is free to rank these EPS and compilations on their own lists. And the songs on these records are not being ignored b/c they are in contention for the top 10 songs list - as are non-album singles. 😀
