- Swimming legend Ian Thorpe breaks the men's 400m freestyle world record to capture the gold medal at the Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games.
Long glide into the finish. One more stroke and he goes sub-3:40 and it'd be the longest-standing WR in swimming.
We all know this should still be the world record.
No we don't. Just as Paul Biederman wore a suit breaking this record, Thorpe is wearing a high tech suit here. When Thorpe made a come back in 2011 he didn't where his famous black suit. This is because it was banned like Bidermans suit now is.
@@bencrowe6454 You have no idea what you're talking about
@@camelot_crusader3024 Why would this be the world record ? Thorpe was using a super suit too.
Thorpe’s suit was “permeable”. Suits from 08-09 were either polyurethane coated or neoprene based. Big difference!
I think Thorpe himself has said that he should of gone under 3:40 here, but he didn't realize how fast he was going and didn't go all out the last 50.
he did in training.
His wall touch was long as well
Where'd he say that? I agree though, if he had of forced a last stroke instead of the glide he'd still have this WR. It's a real shame a literal nobody is the record holder.
don't even care about that shiny suit record just 0.01s faster. this one is god.
Thorpe, after career breakdown, alcoolism, coming out, so, WTF with records ?!
es seco en estilo libre, pareciera que fuera volando sobre el agua.....un 7......
love the shoutout to michael schumacher
Michael Phelps who ???
The best swimmer in the world, at multiple distances, and multiple strokes. That's who.
@@jimbendtsen8841 *sigh*
Even though Thorpe is a GOAT at 200/400 free but them suits , nothing stuck to em at all .
GOAT
Thorpe without his magic suit wouldn't be nearly this fast.
Thorpe went 3:41 in a training suit
This was amazing, but don't forget Thorpe was wearing a high tech suit here. This would be banned now. Just like the suit worn by paul Biederman when he broke this record.
He has nothing without full body swimming suite.
I guess you haven't watched the 1999 Pan Pacs
You haven’t watched the 1998 World Championship final.
