Back in the day when Aussies used to win Olympic gold in long-distance swimming races by entire lengths of the pool....while their teammates took silver for good measure!
one might underestimate hackett by focusing on how far ian moves away from him, but if we look how much hackett is from the others one understands that he was indeed a fantastic swimmer.
I watched a comparison , commentated by a swimming trainer, and the minor,( but important) difference was the glide effect that Thorpe had in his strokes. Oh, and his humongous feet.
they said controversial cause it was an adidas suit and the australian swim team was sponsored by speedo so there was a lot of comotion about thorpe swimming in that suit
It's not the suit at all. This was a suit with not even half the technology of modern Arena's X-glide and Speedo LZR. You can check it was not the suit because Kieren Perkins, former record holder, was wearing the same suit, and did NOTHING.
@@shanedarcy361well that's not true , I dare to say you could not beat thorpe now in any swimming style, and thorpe held all the world records from 200 to 800 mts at the ripe old age of 17. Phelps is a great swimmer no doubt but his records are all wearing the cheat super suits which have negative boyancy and are outlawed . The suit Ian wore had no advantage at all and all swimmers had the choice to wear them but found no benefit in them.
@@doriankeating1963 . You obviously didn’t read my comment properly. I said Thorpe had no peer at FREESTYLE , but Phelps was a world record- holder in medley, and individual world records in butterfly. Thorpe was a competent, but not world champion in individual medley. Sad, but the cookies have to go to Phelps. I hope Oz can produce male world medley champions. The women are up there.
He was the greatest ever until an even bigger freak popped up only a few years later - in some ways Thorpe begat phelps. They both took swimming into the stratosphere
@@toivonencresto Youre such a fanboy. Phelps didnt do anything?? How about when he went 1:52 200m butterfly while no one except him wasnt even under 1:54. And that is just one example of many. Dont underestimate Phelps they both did the same.
@@scotchau2 Thorpe is the middle distance freestyle king no doubt, but you can´t deny Phelps is the greatest swimmer of all time. And Phelps beat Thorpe in IM 200 in 2003.
@Steve King That´s rubbish man. Thorpe´s sexuality had no effect on his representation of Australia. He didn´t come out until his career well and truly ended. He retired young because he had glandular fever in 2006 and found it too hard to get back into training.
I was there that night. Amazing memories.
best freestyler in the world!! he my idol
Ray Warren the greatest Australian idol of all time bloody legend mate

His 800 and 1500 times still the best ever.
Only 2009 special suit times are better by 2022 and Sun Yang. We all know his history with dopes.

What a champ x
5:46 "You are a freak, Ian Thorpe. You well might be the greatest ever". I think that statment still stands firm all these years later.
It’s incredible how far Thorpe is leading Hackett.
Awesome swimmer, one of my favorite events 400
Best Swimmer of our era
Ky Hurst is a freakin boss. Olympic swimmer and Ironman champion! Probably the only guy there that could rival Hackett and Thorpe in badassness.
Commentator is lit🤣🤣
Poetry in motion.
QT was 3.54.10??! just shows the scale of the revloution thorpe put this event into!
amazing swim
the announcers pretty emotional
they said controversial cause it was an adidas suit and the australian swim team was sponsored by speedo so there was a lot of comotion about thorpe swimming in that suit
yeah, decades ahead of his time
"...in that controversial bodysuit..."
Ha! They didn't know yet the meaning of "controversial".

BRUTTTTALLLLIISSSIMO!!!!!!
I don't understand the title. It says WR 3:41.33 but the video shows 3:41.03...oh sorry I guess that was an 8 : i.e. 3:41.83...my bad.
how old is he!?!?!
a lot of swimmers do it for the 400 or 500. i think it saves energy

my top3 400m freestylers
1. Ian Thorpe
2. Sun Yang
3. Park Tae Hwan
theterminator308 what about Kieran Perkins - his record of 3 43.8 pushed the event forward a generation in a single swim, and made Thorpe possible.
@@donna25871 Perkins' time would still medal at most worlds and olympics since then.
This comment not aged well.
Sun Yang is proven cheater.
Having some serious issues before his 4 years ban as well.
The Korean has some as well.
Where does he get the dark blue Swedish goggles
The speed they're swimming at might be close to mine swimming the 50free, frecking fit.. makes me feel bad x_x ... yet again I'm still 14.
THORPE IS MUCH BETTER THAN PHELPS
. Sadly no. Phelps was a brilliant swimmer in freestyle and butterfly. And held the world record for the medley. Thorpe had no peer at freestyle only.

With all the respect, Phelps didn’t for swimming what Thorpie did. And... in terms of pure Talent, i still prefer Thorpe.

1 man can swim faster :)
Always with that cheating suit. Most people don’t give Thorpe much credit, on account of him being unable to excel without a special suit
He has nothing without full body suite.
I disagree
He did a 3:46 at the age of 15 wearing a normal speedo cozzie?
That suite was just a textile suite.
