Some great advice, can’t wait to give it a shot, all my nails so far are ‘vaguely nail like’. The reference marks on the header seems brilliant!

Your video came up on my feed. Nice job and I like your piloted header. I've forged many, many nails so I can appreciate the issues you raise. I cut to center with a much pointier hardie than you use. I also need to use less directional, deliberate strikes to keep the blob centered. For a nail similar to the size you forge my header hole is 3/16" square and my nail stock is 1/4" HR square bar. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment! I’ve not been able to source 1/4” square locally, so I’m stuck with round…the extra material in section would net more material for the head. I’ve tried cutting to centre as well but I’m wondering what the nail makers of old would have done? I’ve seen hot cuts with built in kiss blocks so you don’t part the mail off accidentally, maybe I’ll make a colonial nailmakers station one day.
Cheers from just past the middle of nowhere.

Nice crisp, clean face and table. Is that a 250-300 lb anvil? At least 300...

A little less than 300lb PW, I had a crack professionally welded and elected to have the edges and faces restored at the same time. Very happy with the end result

Would it be easier to taper on the bick?

Never tried to make a nail on the bick, will have to give that a try . The hammer tilted gives very much the same affect on the face of the anvil, and give that the straightening is easier there as well that’s likely why it’s done that way.
The idea is to use a radius to reduce pressure and increase heat with every hammer blow.
