When I was about 10 years old, my step dad took me to a open house at his company, Rocketdyne. One of his coworkers was operating a CNC machine and produced tippy tops while you watched. I still have mine and treasure it.
I used to have a top heavy ring that I would spin. I spun it upside down and the thing righted itself with the gem facing up. I impressed so many people with that haha.
Tom Strong Reviews Yeah, not long after I started showing people it everyone was doing it with their class rings at lunch. Then everyone just kinda got bored of doing it.
I love this, I bought both the Tippe Top and Tippe Top XL and I spin them all the time in study breaks. I got an absolutely perfect spin a couple of times where it carried on spinning for around a minute and never actually inverted. I did wonder if a perfect and super fast spin would make this thing spin longer than Euler's Disk at least in Earth's gravity setting.
my grandma gave me and my brother wooden ones that were painted red. She and my papa called them "cherry tops" because of how they looked. My brother and I never really learned how to spin them until recently. the cats think they're toys haha
I had one of these when I was a kid. It was made of plastic, but it had a "magic" component. It had a hole through its axis, with a metal nail though the hole. Before spinning it, if the top was pressed down onto the mushroom (with the stem uppermost), it would push the nail backward so that its head would lift very slightly at the end of the stem, and the top would invert when spun, as yours does. If, however, it was pressed down onto the stem, the nail pushed through just enough to form a tiny bump in the centre of the mushroom (that's "center" for ryelor123, but RUclips isn't only visible to Americans), after which it could be handed to a friend, who would be unable to make it invert - it would spin on its little point and stay upright.
We used to have these as a child in the 1960s and 70s made from plastic. There was a slight imbalance moulded into an internal spoke under the mushroom head.
When I was a kid my cousin gave me one made of plastic, it was spinning and flipping very nicely. I used to take it with me everywhere until I broke it by mistake. I glued it and broke it again.. I loved it alot. Now I bought this one but I can't spin it properly
You can do the same thing with the plastic two-part easter eggs used to hide candy. Course you have to spin the crap out of them. Always wondered why they would flip over, thanks for the explanation.
I saw somebody try that principle on ICE and it didn't work. You need some friction between the center of rotation and the surface where it is spinning to cause the stand up motion.
Thanks! It is a XL Bio Magnetic steel bangle. They are inexpensive. Here is one from a UK store: www.magnetic-products-store.com/supreme-range-magnetic-bangles/nile-super-strong-bio-magnetic-bangle.html
when a person draws their arms and legs in while skating they spin faster. is there a way to make small arms suddenly snap closed hard enough to make a top regain momentum just one time? Just letting my mind wander sorry:)
Brett Latulip If you could have a threaded center piece and the 'arms' were connected to it in a worn gear fashion so when spun the center shaft moved at a different speed than the body that the arms are on it could 'thread' them inward maybe? No idea how to accomplish this but it might work. I also like to let my mind wonder about these things:)
I do not know how to translate it into English but they were popular from a long time ago. It originated when poor children would spin acorns and when the toy makers tried to re-create that, they discovered that it moved strangely
Unless he has copied part or all of my video, he (and everyine else) is free to make videos about whatever they like. What little I know about crazyrussianhacker is that he makes his own videos.
Do you know what i need in my life every once and a while when I'm down and on the verge of being clinically insane? A proper Englishmen to say Aluminum like he knows what time the queen drinks her tea and feeds her corgis. This guy seems like a man that smokes his pipe while sits by his dutch oven stroking the head of a bloodhound. The type of guy who whispers "Damn Yanks," when they decide to let Donald J Trump get up in the poles. That is fucking class, mate.
+Jack Oury Sir, I offer totally non-professional advice. However, as an Englishman, I do have strong views on how tea should be made, perhaps watching a video about that I made some years ago will further sooth your mind and get you back to the point where you play and share more of your musical talent... :) ruclips.net/video/sX1wx3UW6dw/видео.html
DeansVideoClips It has a round tip to the stalk. so that is in-effect a point as only one small part of that curved end contacts the flat surface at any point.
You are right that the centre of the earth is not attached to the crust as firmly as we might like to think. The poles have certainly switched in the past and will do so at some point in the future.
I am sure they look similar - but this is from the UK company called: gyroscope. I put the link you can follow to the actual item in the comment seconds of my video.
ryelor123 In case you couldn't guess I am from England where the element is called Aluminium and the way I pronounced it is how we say that word in the UK. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aluminium This Wiki page explains the differences in spelling and also the very different phonetics. Let's just enjoy the differences. Same metal!
ryelor123 Check the stats - there are a lot more non-Americans looking at RUclips than there are Americans. Don't you think it a little arrogant to argue that the world should conform to the American viewpoint? Oh, hang on - I just remembered - there *is* no world ouside of the good ol' USA!
+Mike Collins Sorry to learn my joke fell flat. It was funny to me that we are saying that Brits are pronouncing English language wrong way. After all it is their language. It is us who have the accent - not them. It is same as saying Newton did not know calculus or Steve Job did not know how to use iPad. Cheers.
Interesting... Certainly there is evidence that the internal iron magnetic core and the earths crust seem to shift giving us 'reversed magnetic' poles... www.nasa.gov/topics/earth/features/2012-poleReversal.html
The article seems to infer that because life was not affected by the last reversal then probably the axis wasn't affected but that's just inference. I was also seeing some videos on the Tennis Racket Theorem and it would suggest something similar to Earth has a whole shifting. I was aso curious if any celestial body has been observed having undergone such phenomenon, nature is amazing, and scary!
There is evidence that suggests the pole reversal occurs every few 100k years. Life has been around far longer than that, so whatever it does is not 'extinction' level even at its worsts. Even Homo sapiens have been around at least 300k (based on latest finds). motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/mbjbv8/homo-sapiens-human-evolution-discovery-morocco-jebel-irhoud

+Robert Briggs Still. Something to show the kids later on in life!
Tom Strong Reviews haha, yeah that's true.
I love videos like this why cant more people do it like this guy??
I have just bought one of these made out of wood, amazing to watch! Thanks for the explanation of the "why"
I have never seen a wooden one!
Glad you found my video helpful.

Thanks for sharing!
I think its cool - my Grandson will love it. I'm off to make one or maybe two myself
my grandma gave me and my brother wooden ones that were painted red. She and my papa called them "cherry tops" because of how they looked. My brother and I never really learned how to spin them until recently. the cats think they're toys haha
This can also be done with a ring that has an large stone, if spun on the rock it will turn over and spin right side. Try it yourself.
Tippe Top?
Huh, if I was naming the thing I would have gone with "Topsy Turvy", on account of things getting turned upside down.
:3

+Mike Collins that's an epic trick. I want it.
This is so freaking nice!
+Love Madrid It is amazing to watch.
Very cool! Thank you!
My brother used to have a plastic one of these. Quite good fun, that.
We used to have these as a child in the 1960s and 70s made from plastic. There was a slight imbalance moulded into an internal spoke under the mushroom head.
thumb tacks act sorta like this, if u spin it by the point in mid air it will fall and spin on the point on the surface
I had these 40 years ago in plastic!
+uktottys
Yes, so did I. They were everywhere.
+uktottys mine were wood
uktottys me too
ha ha ha
don't know what new this guy wants to show here
i had them out of wood

I'd like to see it in super slo-mo. When it changes
Good idea! I now have a far better camera and might just get around to doing just that!
Cool video.
Thanks. :)
Nice bracelet Tom Strong Reviews, whats it called ?
Thanks!

thanks!
Love it !
I actually made one of these out of wood!
i need one!!!
Looks like the ball joint in a hip replacement or something.
逆さになる原理は、重心と接地点を回転軸としますと、回転軸に対して独楽の形状が重心から遠ざかるほど出っ張りが大きいので、回転毎に出っ張った方に接地点が移動して重心が上になるようです。
You should try it on a friction less surface, like ice!
Whilst it would spin longer with lower friction, the behaviour would still be the same.

Oops...yeah...wonder:)
I've done this with plenty of other things. Actually you can even use a ring, as long as the ring has a big end and thin end.
Can get this exact top spinning for over 5mins if it doesn't flip over like it's suppose to, definite neat either way.
if you spin it anti-clockwise (say with left hand) does it flip???
Rotation direction does not alter this. Still flips up on its point.
God I love physics
good!!
I had one of those as a kid
This is a classic Japanese New Years toy
Do you know what they call this and why is it a commin gift ??
I do not know how to translate it into English but they were popular from a long time ago. It originated when poor children would spin acorns and when the toy makers tried to re-create that, they discovered that it moved strangely
need to do it with a high speed camera
You are right!
(Once funds allow I will do this at a higher FPS)

Wonder how a magnetic one of these would work on a levitron Tom Strong Reviews
aaron frederick I keep thinking about buying a magnetic levitating device... Nice idea!
Just thinking of the physics, I would assume the top would flip based on the pos/neg charge of the magnet
aaron frederick This one is made of aluminium, so I would have to get one made of steel or at least some metal that included iron.
I've had loads of these over the years made with plastic!😊
I REMEMBER THESE AMG

William Nixon A year late mate.
Jack Oury ikr
Are you lot on the weed.
I had things like this when I was a kid lol
I've done that with an acorn!!!!!!!!!!
awesome
I have done this before with something else that wasn't a top,I just can't remember what it was.
I have a ring that does this
an acorn?
That looks like my artificial hip joint.

These are not expensive, circa £10 GBP
clearly this man is using his telekinesis
+t900HAWK The world is not ready for such disclosure!
For now lets just assume it is a spinning body observing all the known laws of physics...
get a concave mirror like what's used with a eulers disk. cool little top.
This type of top through conservation of motion actually reverses its spin direction while inverted.
I wanna spin that so bad
I had one but I thought it was broken so I gave it to my friend
i seen n used wood ones
Mine flips to the bottom, but neverjumps to the top of the pole.
It needs to be spinning really fast.
Any way,he still has it
good mushroom i like it
It needs a point on the stalk.
DeansVideoClips It has a round tip to the stalk. so that is in-effect a point as only one small part of that curved end contacts the flat surface at any point.
Hi Tom, I saw that, I guess it didn't look all that rounded on the video... Interesting little top from a physics perspective especially!
DeansVideoClips I agree. I find items like this fascinating. Makes you really try to understand what is happening.
SCIENCE!!!
I really should do some more of these fun science videos. :)
That's what is going to happen to the center of the Earth.
