Crazy colour on that one. I never thought corroded bronze could make a coin look so good. The two tone effect on the bust really makes all the details pop.
My students at UCSC are loving your videos, Leo. I'd still love for you to visit the class by Zoom for 10 minutes or so. 😊
Green copper coin looks unreal 👌
Unboxing new coins is the most beautiful work of a collector. There could be more videos like this. My first two coins of 2025 are a drachm ofKking Ariarathes of Cappadocia and an antoninianus of Emperor Gallienus with a centaur on the reverse.
Ohh, you are getting started with the Gallienus Zoo series? Its a very interesting set to assemble, and a challenging one!
I’m also starting a zoo collection. Nice coins, just seen them
@@ClassicalNumismatics This is the tenth addition to my Emperor Gallienus Zoo. But the rarest animals still elude me.
Beautiful silvered antoniniani, I loved all of them!!And the green patina of the Maximianus one is amazing. Congratulations for your new coins.
You should do one of these quick videos whenever you get package. It’s always exciting to open new coins or if you can’t, to watch someone else do it lol
I'll do it! People seem to enjoy it quite a lot :)
That Maximian antoninianus is beautiful. It’s fascinating to see that the Western mints were still able to produce more naturalistic engravings during the tetrarchy. It proves that the Western classical spirit wasn’t completely crushed by Diocletian’s despotism.
Man I really like those late Antos. Leo. I love looking for the late Antos. Of Aurelian, Probus, Diocletian etc. that have some how kept almost all it's silvering. Nice new additions.
I just got that exact Hadrian coin this week! I love it!!
Awesome group of coins! Thanks for sharing!!
Great coins, I really enjoyed the video. Coming from the UK Hadrian is special for me, I have been to Hadrian's wall and the surrounding area such as Housesteads Roman Fort. The Maximianus coin is indeed impressive but then again they all are.
Lovely coins. Beatifull colours. Congratulations.
Love this style of video. The unboxing is always my favorite part so its cool to get to experience this with you. My first purchases of 2025 were a silver tetradrachm of Macrinus from Carrhae with a worn obverse but a beautiful eagle reverse, a Lucius Verus CONSECRATIO limes denarius with a beautiful eagle, an Elymain AE drachm of Phraates with a beautiful eagle (yes I like eagles), and an early Ummayad copy of a Constans II Byzantine follis that I like because you can tell they didn't understand the meaning of the "M" because the middle has a loop in it that reminds me of the royal knots of the later arab coins.
Those are some varied and wonderful coins! Congrats!
1:20 Notice how much the seated figure looks like Britannia on the the British One Penny coins.
5:45 I have some of that pink material on a Ptolemy III bronze triobol of mine. Don't know what it is though
👍👍👍
Ngl I enjoyed this type od video the most. You enjoying the coins and with no script
I plan on making more of these. Stay tuned! :)
Yes. I do like the format. But, I also like you other video formats. That green patina on the bronze is killer! Would it be possible to break down the legends underneath the videos with future releases? Segments/pronunciation/meaning? It's cool hearing you read it out, but I have trouble getting what you say from just reading the legends myself. Enjoyed the video as always!
Thanks for the feedback! Im thinking about publishing these different styles of videos every wednesday and my "usual" presentation video every saturday.
I'll make sure to take it slowly on the next unboxing, and do a full description of each coin. Maybe not with drawings, since its kinda time-consuming, but at least a full readout of the legends :)
@ That would be awesome and very helpful. You’re #1 with ancient coin videos/education. Perfect mix. 🥃
Super nice coins. That bright green is amazing. Definitely has higher copper
They all have very high copper content, around 95%!
It also toned really weirdly
Hi Leo, great coins, that Hadrian denarius must be arround AD 120-22, from the last issues with long legend. Alexandria is always such a popular mint... Fully silvered antoniniani are a luxury nowadays... 6:12 correct this is not eastern, this one is from the mint of Rome itself, 7th officina, AD 286.... 9:39: actually this one is from Cyzicus, and yes, the last is Antioch! Great coins and above all great natural video!
Staple holders make me anxious and paranoid. I have an 1881 portuguese india rupee with a random scratch that I can't get out of my head that was caused by one of these staples.
I'll be very careful, promise!
I thoroughly enjoyed this.
Thank you! :) I'll make more unboxings in the future
I like this style. We get to see how a pro gets their coins. I purchased 2 coins so far this year. The first was a Septimius Severus Denarius BM-340 EF
Thank you! I'll do more unboxings this year, people seem to love these, so I'll make sure to make longer episodes where I slowly go over each coin.
I want to start collecting ancient coins, I already have some ancient bronzes that I was gifted, but idk where to start and have a low budget
Head to my channels page, in the "Playlists" section. There's a ton of content for beginners there that should help you out greatly.
@@ClassicalNumismatics sure will do, I've already watched some, thanks!
And love your content!
Small budget: Good coins in poor condition or poor coins in good condition.
Start with some later roman denarius or the larger antonianius of gordian you find for as low as 50 dollars in good condition or you can get later roman follis in the same price or you can get a Alexander the great drachm
@@ramimawla1475 personally id get a Roman sestertius from gordian lll Philip or severus Alexander there big and pretty and affordable
What a great coins 😮
Diocletian red patina: Copper(I) oxide typically has a red color, and the presence of silver could cause this to happen (chemist here :) )
Thank you! That explains it :)
I really dig that Maximian with the green patina! I’m a sucker for those types of bronze coins where the features are highlighted by natural processes (as long as there’s no bronze disease of course). My coins of Constantine and Julian have these earthen and sand deposits respectively which really bring these otherwise dark pieces of metal to life. My first coin I bought this year was a denarius of Tiberius (the Tribute Penny). It’s a pretty mediocre and worn coin but the features are still identifiable and I’m just happy to have an example I could afford of this historically significant piece in my collection. Next up for this month is a pretty spectacular siliqua I just ordered of Valens (my first siliqua) in EF condition and has some gorgeous iridescent cabinet toning.
At first, I was frightened to the bone that this might have been a coin completely covered in that powdery copper disease layer, but fortunately no. Nature did something really wonky with that copper on the surface, and I love it! :)
Yes. More like these please. Would it be in poor taste to ask prices paid? Probably, but it is a question I have. Looked to be some quality coins. I like to hear the descriptions you provide. I also like to hear of the coin composition if that could be discussed with each coin to understand how the immense range of colors for ancients. It appeared to this naive eye that all of the coins were well struck so I suspect they were on the pricey end of the spectrum. Do you want to discuss where you purchase your ancients.
I have a playlist for beginners with quite a few videos on how to buy, sell, research prices, everything related to navigating the market, this should help you get started.
I'll keep the prices I paid private, but as you will see on the videos, my focus is on being budget-oriented and always finding the best price for a coin 😀
very nice new pieces
I've never been this early~
was fun, thanks
Thank you! I'll do more unboxings in the future
Sweet, but where did you get them?
From a dealer. I have a playlist for beginners where I give many suggestions of dealer websites, places to research prices, etc. I recommend you head there and have a look.
