Channel gets better and better. Thanks for another video on what all those ancient coins could actually buy. Makes one glad for all its faults to live in the present day.
If I going to the Colosseum, I'm not pinching asses!
😂
As Maj. Kong said, "a feller could have a pretty good time at the circus."
Brilliant content as always! I wonder why RUclips doesnt push nice content like this, prefering to just show us brainrot continuously. This video is jam packed with relevant information and is narrated in a storyteller manner, which is easy to follow for both beginners and history buffs alike.
Your time to shine will come,Leo. Keep going!
I would bring some worn Aureus from Nero or Vespasian, have a blast at the Games and Circus Maximus, go chill at some imperial baths, and try to end up with 20+ denarii from Claudius, Caligula, Galba and Otho in pocket change. Absolute win-win situation, as these coins will be worth far more than the worn Aureus you started with, once back in our time ;P
Well done. You really brought that ancient day to life.
Thank you! :)
ABSOLUTELY would prefer a day at the Circus. Watching the race scene from Ben Hur (1959) is pretty exciting and it only could be better in person!
Great video!!
It must have been much easier to get in as well, with a 100.000+ capacity. I need to make a video on the Circus Maximus, now that you mention it.
Its a shame that the circus maximus doesnt exist anymore
Alas! After seeing that episode, I realized that I absolutely needed a tessera for my collection.
So do I!
My wallet cries to think about it, but Im starting to pay attention to artifacts as well
Are amphiteatre tesseras easy to find?
@@isabelcrb I haven't seen them at any auction yet.
That 15 min video was worth more than 2 hours of the latest
awful Gladiator film.
Keep up the great work Leo and we will keep watching 👍🙂
Thank you for the kind words! Glad to know this entertained you more than that dumpster fire of a movie :)
Priceless.
Great vid. Leo. Very interesting and entertaining. As always thx for all your work
Thank you for the kind words Christopher! I put lots of love and care in these videos
Fantastic insight. Really enjoyable.
A great idea for a video! Creates a clear sense of context for what happens to the money.
Thanks Stephen! I enjoy contextualizing coins in the situations they were used :)
Thats what makes the small change so interesting. Yeah, it isnt as pretty as the gold stuff, but it is so relatable
And it shows how different life was back then. Social connections were very important
Thanks for the new video ! 😊
I would bring back another couple denarii just to get change and bring back all those sweet sweet sestertii which featured the Colosseum and try to complete a 12 Caesar's set of sestertii.
😂😂😂😂😂!!!!!
Good idea! 😂
Another great video! Thank you!
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it :) How much would you take in your time machine?
I always wondered about this. Thank you for the video. It was very interesting. I kinda like the idea of what was a lot of money to them, would only cost me $20 in silver if I bought it now and brought it back in time. Now only if I had a time machine
Surprisingly, the amount of value in silver romans earned was still bigger than in some very poor modern countries. Even without accounting for the fact that silver in ancient world was much more valuable.
That is correct. Once we look at these facts we are reminded how valuable precious metals still are
Brilliant.Thank you 😊
I would try to bring back as many denari as I could carry in order to enrich my collection of ancient coins. 😊
Thank you very much for this wonderful Video!
I'd try to grab as many Claudius and Caligula denarii I could find!
Brilliant!
Excelente video leo, preciosas piezas y un contenido espectacular,un fuerte abrazo
Muchas gracias Antonio! :)
Looks like a 90% silver equivalent in older US coins would be about 2 quarters and a dime. Back in say 1890’s 60 cents could get you a day at the ballpark. But not a fun time…..
Looks like the Romans had it good then! :)
A great video, thank you. A great coin of Vespasian at the start. I have been to the Colosseum, Rome is a great city. I also own a few Ancient oil lamps, one of them is a later Roman lamp that has a picture of the 3 Hebrews on the discuss from the book of Daniel. Great coins shown, for sure Domitian understood inflation and it is a quandary how much things cost in Roman times and how much they would cost today.
Domitian really deserves credit for being one of the very few leaders in history to actually INCREASE the amount of silver on his coins, rather than debase it. Vespasian was quite fond of "ancient quantitative easing" and Domitian tried hard to revert his father's inflationary policies.
I would much prefer a stop at the emperor's booth during intermission and scene change. then back to the imperial garden for a cookout.
An afternoon at the imperial garden sounds like a great idea!
The pretorians maybe wouldnt allow you to approach him 😂
Now I need a tessera 😂
So do I! 😂
Its amazing how similar we are to those romans. Except executions...and VAR 😂
Imagine having VAR at the Gladiatorial games, and Photofinish at the Circus Maximus!! 😂😂
Where can we find the scene at 2:02?
That was AI generated. After an exhausting number of tries
Leo: I teach a class at UC Santa Cruz with 140 students. Would you be willing to join us for 5 minutes on a Zoom meeting to tell us about your interest in the ancient world and numismatics? I've been promoting your videos as education content.
I would be honoured to! Send me a message on Instagram and we can discuss it further :)
Ps- Pacific time zone. Class starts at noon

Thank you for the informative video. As a new ancient coin collector where would I purchase a Tessera and what would be the best search description to find one?
The Dumbarton Oaks catalogue of tesserae, and the article at "Forum Ancient Coins" about tessera and lead tokens is a good start
thank you so much for your reply, you’re partly the reason why I started on this journey 6 months ago!
Might be interesting to go to the bathhouses to hear the gossip of the day. Isn't that free?
Some were, others charged a quadrans :)
Haha, of course no Roman meal would be complete wihout garum. Truly the Mickey D's of their time.
Its isnt Rome without the smell of rancid fish!
Love the Republican era coin!
hello
Do a video on the Nabateans!
Thanks. This was a great one. 🪙
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. Lots of research when on it :)
If you can share it with anyone you think would enjoy, thats greatly appreciated!
