What a killer group! Came across this vid as I was looking for performances by the late, great Wallace Roney, but everyone here is just legendary. As a bass player, I've always been in the minority in that I've never been the greatest fan of McBride's style, but he plays a fantastic solo here.
Obviously his playing speaks for itself, but you can really graph the weight of what Gilmore's doing by the way the others react when he starts soloing. A seasoned bunch of players smiling from ear to ear every note he plays. So good.
Jazz is the most wonderful and difficult incredible where we think and go immediately to the fretboard or keyboard, which happens some instruments do not 'piaccen' alto sax sounds like a 'culeca hen' me pleasing instruments medium sound serious I play well trumpet for example does not mean making sharp as the old steam engines and speed that has to do with the exegara fingering technique achieved does not mean thinking and build a correct idea, actually usually as guiitarrista style django I saw that the fanatical people like to speed it does not say anything, when you think about it, amucho usually find it difficult to interpret a ballad, because it requires somewhat slow and one should think that express ... no, it's my idea, do you think? tito
Tito Penchi I see your point. Personally speaking, I prefer playing in slower tempos aswell because I can try to make lines that sound beautiful instead of just flexing with technique and guts (which I don't have anyways) . A lot of people play in the same tempos, registers and harmonies as Bird and Diz and Bud but can't quite handle them. But any music is good as long it's authentic. And with Kenny Garret, for instance, I dion't just see a youngster showing off but a genuine man putting his soul in there.
As Wallace's roasd manager for 27 years, I can say with absolute certainty that your comment was ill-conceived and coming from ignorance (hopefully innocent). Wallace NEVER took the stage unprepared. Art and Tony taught him that the bandstand is sacred, and he approached it as such without fail. This is fact.
???? Wallace played this on the original recording with Chick and on the road with him countless times over the years. As a good friend and mentee of the late great Mr. Roney, I can assure you that he knew the head perfectly-there’s even that lick on the beginning of the second section where he plays it perfectly even though Kenny laid the phrase out.
MY new favorite standard. Kenny Garrett played one of his BEST solos EVER!
Bro I see Kenny Garret live in Bilbao was brutality WoW amazing he is one legend saludos
Rip wallace roney
A little bit of "Dusk n' Sandy" at the intro. Genius.

Chick Cores has been an awesome yet consummate force since I heard him in Miles Davis' bands of the late 60's.

McBride’s solo is so un bass like at times. Like straight from a piano book or something. Genius man

Graham Lyons chick
Thanks
Bud Powell
Roney is so BAD.
Wallace didn't know the head...and is trying to get it off of what Kenny is playing...never quite does it the way he would had he known it cold.
